Arthur Smith's Offense

Here's a good video on his offense. Canada's offense was just a collection of basic plays. Nothing set anything else up. Defenses were rarely put in a bind. Multiple times we heard defenses say they knew the plays before the snap.

Smith is the exact opposite. The main design element is that he uses the same formation to run multiple plays, so the defense can't make a pre-snap read. The route combos are designed to make defenders have to make a choice and the QB makes a simple read.

I think he will prove to be a solid OC for the team. For me what he did in Tennessee showed he can get the most out of an offense.

Just will need to have C and WR upgraded by the start of the season to prevent hiccups...

Its a damn Shame Pickett bailed on the team... Smith's offense is 90% under center and like 98% huddle... with ample play action... all strengths of pickett..

Though Wilson was slightly better in those areas last year, and fields is good in those areas too

Good post. Head coaches get jobs for a reason so I have no doubt Smith will be solid in this position and I think his vision matches a lot (but not all) of what the front office is doing.

Many of Tomlin’s best coaches on staff have been former head coaches (LeBeau, Munchak, Haley, Arians), so hopefully Smith can join them.

I hear all kinds of talk about This, but have never seen this quoted by AR2 or Kahn. I think it is truly just wishful thinking, and HIGHLY UNLIKELY to be true.

We saw that at the end of last year. What appeared to be a change in offensive mindset, was abandoned in the playoff game. We saw the same gameplan trotted out, that had failed miserably the last few RARE playoff games.

An improved D can help with that as well.

They have C, WR, and T concerns as well as possibly adding to the QB room. So hopefully whoever they add in the first four rounds on D can contribute as well.

Nice video, tape, and shows why zone blocking is crucial to Smith's heavy play-action. Zone blocking allows line to block the same run-or-pass, while drive blocking or double-teaming is not going to work since the linemen are going to wind up more than a yard past the LOS too much.

We'll see how this revamped line (new OC, Jones at LT, new RT) works with zone blocking.

I get you hate the dude, but the Steelers in 22 had one of the highest percentages of long drives in the league... the reason Picketts tds numbers were bad was because for the last four seasons, our red zone passing game is ****.

Pickett was ok until he got inside the 20, then he got overly conservative... as did Rudolph... Trabisky just forced stuff...



For example, pickett had 8 red zone Tds in his career... mostly late game situations where he wasnt forcing things... Rudolph had 7.. for the same reasons early on..

Last season, Pickett had a 98.4 passer rating from under center. A 113 passer rating from play action, and a 119 from RPO...
His shotgun passer rating was 78.8, his non play action was 76.1 and his non rpo was 78.9....
So we ran 281 shotgun snaps with him and 43 under center, called a whopping 46 play action passes, often from shotgun for some reason... and only called 18 rpos all year...

The other two QBs were used equally as idiotically.

But acting like Fields or Wilson has had significantly better production in these areas last year is totally ignoring the actual split stats,

Fields was 103.4 / 96.5 / 100.1 in the same things last year. Its basically the same.

Wilson was 98.6/ 115.2/ 126.1...

all of these guy seem like a good fit for AS's offense... but Pickett Bitched out and went to a shotgun heavy offense... seems foolish...

The Steelers looking to upgrade the QB position that threw for 13 TDs in 25 games by no means screwed him. We laugh at the Jets with Zach Wilson or the Patriots with Mac Jones and call them out for having bad QB play and are afraid to do the same to our own guy. He just wasn't good enough and they found an upgrade. I wish they'd do the same with Dan Moore because it'll be inexcusable if he's starting at LT over Broderick Jones this season.

He also had a front row seat for the lies made to Rudolph too. Just maybe he didn’t want to go down the same path. All the reasons I have given for why I would leave if I were Rudolph, would also apply to KP8 too. No way I would work for someone that will lie right to your face, if I had ANY other option.

This is EXACTLY what has been missing from our offense for years. Literally years.
Isn't this EXACTLY what an offensive coordinator is supposed to do ?
What is most troubling is WHY did the Steeler management/front office/GM not see/realize this ?

How could you watch just a few weeks of the offensive play calling and NOT realize how terrible a job was being done ?
When you read comments from opposing defensive players labeling the offensive play calling terrible - how do you not act ?

I agree with the other thread....What has changed ?
