Combine Results/Observations

hopefully it is not new england dallas or a division foe

when we trade pick 32 and get a later2nd a 3rd and a 5th rounder ( I admit to not be great at knowing what trade value on picks is)

I would take him with our 1st 3rd though
No chance I trade that 32. If value isn't there I'd move back in one for capital. But every single year because of need or just plain stupidity a great football player falls out of the first into the top five picks of the second. No way I trade that. Unless the asking price is unreal.

well of course it depends on who falls but if they get a deal that can't be denied....

I guess I'd have to look at the player and the deal. But I've never seen a year where there wasn't a guy who no one could believe was there. Now I suppose if it's a Q and the drop in two isn't far and the deal is sweet......everything has a price.

Interesting. Looking at early 2nd round picks the last few drafts:

2022
Logan Hall DE Houston
Christian Watson WR ND State
Roger McCreary CB Auburn

2021
Tyson Campbell CB Georgia
Elijah Moore WR Mississippi
Javonte Williams RB North Carolina
Landon Dickerson C Alabama

2020
Tee Higgins WR Clemson
Michael Pittman, Jr. WR USC
D'Andre Swift RB Georgia
Jonathan Taylor RB Wisconsin

2019
Byron Murphy CB Washington
Rock Ya-Sin CB Temple
Jawaan Taylor OT Florida
Deebo Samuel WR South Carolina

2018
Austin Corbett C Nevada
Will Hernandez G UTEP
Nick Chubb RB Georgia
Shaquille Leonard LB South Carolina State

2017
Kevin King CB Washington
Cam Robinson OT Alabama
Malik McDowell DT Michigan State
Budda Baker S Washington

So some good players, a couple great players (Leonard, Taylor, Chubb, soon to be Dickerson) but not nearly as many as I anticipated.

Really like Van Ness. I’ve been saying for 3 months he’s a first round pick. I think he has the frame to pack on 20lbs and play on the line. Reminds me of Keisel.
I'm intrigued by this player. Seems to have inside outside potential which would give them a ton of flexibility in year one. The Highsmith contract is going to be a big problem. If you got a guy who could replace him if need be or slide inside with 10-15 lbs that's pretty damn handy.

Add to that his physical traits - very long arms, frame that can easily add 15 good lbs. - an official 4.58 40, and a violent temperament on the field, and he projects as a very good player in the NFL.

Keion White intriguing. More tools than Ace Hardware, big, fast, strong and posted a good game vs. North Carolina in 2022 with 3 sacks, but seemed to disappear against Georgia. But he just looks like a future 5-tech. 6'6", 285 lbs., 34" vertical (same as Tank Dell), 30 reps so guy likes lifting weights. Big enough to move inside to the 3-tech when Tomlin goes to the oh so popular 2 DL formation.

Can't get too caught up in numbers. You just want to make sure that they aren't alarmingly off . Better than what tape shows? Some athletes in shorts just test better. Some athletes in pads just play better. Now if on tape there is a concern and they don't test well. Sure be worried. Coming off injury and won't test or don't test well? Sure be worried. Jarvis showed run defending concerns. Then didn't test well. Should have been an uhoh but for whatever reason he was drafted 1.

If you are underweight or undersized and don't test well then I wonder what putting on weight will do. For those prospects I would rather pass early...
This. You can’t let the combine make you forget what you saw last fall. AB and Joe Haden both had forties in the high 4.5s.

If all the favorites are gone I'll be fine with van Ness

I think he is going to be a solid pro. Really think his best football is ahead of him.

I think the Steelers have to protect themselves against Highsmith leaving us high and dry. Know I’m not certain Van Ness is there at 17 anymore. I think he might slide into the top 15 with a decent chance at top 10. But there’s a decent crop of pass rushers this year that fit the bill.

YaYa Diaby
Isaiah Foskey
Nick Herbig
Tyrus Wheat
Lonnie Phelps
Byron Young
Thomas Incoom

No particular order.

Any of these guys inside capable like Van Ness so as to get him on the field next year and play inside should Highsmith stay?

I would add

Jose Ramirez
Viliami Fehoko

We aren’t drafting one, but what order do you think the QBs will go? The guys are drafted in tools, so it seems like there could be all four top QBs going in the top 10.

Foskey, Wheat, Incoom, and Diaby are all over 260. But comparable as like a poor man's Van Ness over 270 would be like Mike Morris, Viliami Fehoko, Tyler Lacy

Stroud
Young
Lewis
Richardson

I think its more than size requirements. Van Ness has played and lined up in both here.

Nolan Smith (DL) ran a 4.39 40. Now, he's a smaller DL, but for any DL to run faster than most WRs? Whooeee!!! That guy can move!!
Let us know what else you see during the combine.
Nolan Smith would be an outside LB in the Steelers system.

Georgia really missed him in the last half of the season. Guy would’ve been a game changer if he was able to suit up. Glad he’s back to speed literally

Yeah, that is a bit light. I was thinking in that 175lb range. That is pretty light to take down an NFL receiver. I wonder if he benched. Fred Smoot was 172lbs and only threw up 225 1 time which I believe is a combine record for least reps. Smoot did have a decent NFL career. And ironically played college football at Mississippi State.
Too much emphasis on size.

Bulk helps in terms of bumps and bruises and a better withstanding to contact/absorption.

Aside, tendon strength and explosive power is what coaches should be looking at.

If I were a scout.
I’d be looking at power output, injury history. Pound for pound power. Size has been ingrained in the sports world for quite some time. But anybody who has lived in the weight training world knows. Size doesn’t necessarily correlate to strength. Powerlifters and olympic powerlifters are slimmer by comparison to their bodybuilding counterparts but will be a lot more stronger and explosive in lifting.

I wouldn’t worry too much about weight. I think most times pad on extra lbs to their players actual weight

So my board is Van Ness or Campbell. Ideally both, but realize that is unrealistic. I'm not saying Watt production, but after watching a lot of film this weekend looking at Combine results, reading a lot and thinking about fit. I think you are getting a Watt like motor guy with just the right amount of football IQ and nastiness. I wouldn't take Campbell at 1.17, but If Van Ness is gone, I would drop and take him or take him at 32. My pick is getting Van Ness at 1.17 or Campbell at 1 drop down and value or 32.
