Day Three - Draft

My magic 8 ball tells me that Omar and Andy are running this draft. Tomlin was told to just play cheerleader.

Russell kind of fell into their lap. This is not a win or bust season. It is a get better and compete every week season though. I really feel if everything stays on course the 2025 season is the target.

I'm not really sure guys like Watt, Heyward and Fitzpatrick feel that way, as they apparently pushed hard to bring in Wilson.

They don't have many prime years left, with Heyward probably already past his.

There's no guarantee 2025 will be any better if the QB position is not settled.

I think the Steelers feelings are Justin Fields is the long term QB.

Russ is a bridge QB that came cheap. They know he is about done and Father Time has crept up on him.

McCormick is a great prospect..BUT with the steelers not having a 5th round pick, it means that 59 players are coming off the board before they pick again.

This likely means they are looking at scraps at DB, DT, and outside WR.

Doing that seems like a luxury more than a necessity a this point, given the more glaring depth issues at DL, CB and WR, same with Patrick Wilson

Loved the first three picks, not so much the last two, though I do like the players.

It might be a case of the Steelers having them too highly rated to pass up where they took them.
At this point of the draft, I'm not sure there were any players left who were going to help at the immediate areas of need. Use these picks to build toward the future because of upside. I think they got that with their previous two picks, which is why I love them. That is something Colbert didn't seem to focus on.

I think Kahn has defined his job and it doing it very well.

Colbert had Tomlin also in what Colbert defined his job as.

Night and day difference in how current GM and past GM approached their job.

somewhere there's a guy bragging about how he banged the Lume/Mando lady.

McCormick has very long arms for an interior OLman - almost 34". Also clocked a 1.71 10m split. For comparison, Fashanu posted a 1.77 10m split.

I'd say that's a safe bet (at least the early rounds). It had been 11 years since the Steelers drafted someone for the OL in the first round before last year (Decastro 2012). Now they do it two years in a row, plus select three out of five picks this year. Had they done that for Ben during his last decade, the team probably has at least one more ring.

I'm sure pretty well every player in the NFL thinks the same way. But if every team's management felt every season was win or bust, they'd all be like the Cleveland Browns.

All I'm saying this isn't the time to mortgage the future and get into cap he'll like the Rams. We're not in the position they were. And our best days as a team are ahead of us.

I agree 100% with those who posit that the Steelers may not have been targeting Payton Wilson and Mason McCormick for picks 98 and 119, but when they were still available, could not pass them up. Too much talent that late to let slide by. Seriously, you think the Rats and Chiefs pass on those guys that late?

One thing the fans can’t complain about that they didn’t stay true to their board. This is how you fortify trenches.
And this is why I love this draft, they are taking guys who can start in the NFL, whether it's now or down the road. Not taking a guy at a position of need who plays special teams, an injury replacement and is gone after 4 years. Weidel and Kahn have a completely different approach and the Steelers will be better off for it.

Where does your "UH pimping" end and your STEELERS fandom begin ?

draft day for the most part

Tank Dell was the exception. but as I said many times I was happy with the Washington pick and Dell went way earlier in the 3rd before the steelers had a shot

but I did make a post or two about his successes last season

I know they want to start with the trenches (at least on the O side of the ball) but this pick seems un-needed. They have so many other needs, this pick doesn't make much sense. Maybe they'll wait until Cam retires to address the trenches on the D side as they have on the O last year and this year.

Idk, there must be some red flag, lack of athleticism or worse, the Steelers passed on him for a developmental Guard
after rolling the dice on Wilson in the 3rd I thought for sure they would leap on Tampa in the 4th...must be something there

still overall solid draft going

No doubt, but the Steelers know that the window is closing on their best defensive players and leaders and they may be feeling a little pressure to win some playoff games and get over the hump.

In particular, players like Watt don't come around very often and their record is pretty bad when he doesn't play. He'll be 30 this year.
