Day Three - Draft

Idk, there must be some red flag, lack of athleticism or worse, the Steelers passed on him for a developmental Guard
Slow, stiff hips, tends to be too upright in his backpedal, not a top flight athlete in any area at a position that requires you to have at least one special trait (speed, flexibility, burst)

At least, that’s what I’ve been reading about his fall.

No doubt, but the Steelers know that the window is closing on their best defensive players and leaders and they may be feeling a little pressure to win some playoff games and get over the hump.

In particular, players like Watt don't come around very often and their record is pretty bad when he doesn't play. He'll be 30 this year.
Definitely. But to sell the farm for this season in particular would be a disservice to those guys. They have a little time left. We did tried to do exactly that with Ben's last season by putting bandaids on everything and crossing our fingers. It turned out horrible and left a terrible mess that's just being fixed now.

My magic 8 ball tells me that Omar and Andy are running this draft. Tomlin was told to just play cheerleader.
I'd say that's a safe bet (at least the early rounds). It had been 11 years since the Steelers drafted someone for the OL in the first round before last year (Decastro 2012). Now they do it two years in a row, plus select three out of five picks this year. Had they done that for Ben during his last decade, the team probably has at least one more ring.
I said in an earlier post. Obviously the previous regime never read Posts on the STEELER NATION. And obviously Omar does.
I really wonder sometimes what the other guys were doing. How long have we been screaming about fixing the line?

Since Pouncey started sailing the pigskin over Big Ben’s head the year before he retired, then David being forced to retire. It wasn’t rocket science. CB….same thing. They are finally listening to us. 😉😉😉

I know they want to start with the trenches (at least on the O side of the ball) but this pick seems un-needed. They have so many other needs, this pick doesn't make much sense. Maybe they'll wait until Cam retires to address the trenches on the D side as they have on the O last year and this year.
I think they put the resources into the offensive side because it needs the most work. The defense needs to get younger in a couple of spots, plus add some depth, however, the defense is far and away much closer to being super bowl caliber than the offense. The defense is good enough as is to keep the team in most games. If they can get to at least a slightly above average offense this year, the team may surprise some people if Wilson can go back to good Rus (or Fileds steps up). i suspect they have a couple of free agents in mind for the defense that they like better than who was available when they picked after the second round in the draft.

I don't think they will break the bank on trading for a top WR they would then have to pay 25 million plus since Smith probably plans to use Freiermuth and Washington a lot in the passing game and the team is more than a good WR away from contending to win a super bowl. They will have to develop young guys and hope they can get better than expected contributions out of aging above average WR free agents that may want to come play with Rus for cheap.

What Tomlin and Colbert allowed to happen on the offensive side over the past few years, coaching and talent, plus some defensive misfires, will take more than two drafts and mid range free agents to fix. I like what Khan is doing so far, but it's going to take some time to get everything in place to get back to the old standard of winning expectation (not the new standard).

Rattler is a project. He was terrible at Oklahoma, not terrible at South Carolina against better competition. Uhh, decent backup pick.

6th round DT project who has the physical traits to play 0 or 3? Khristian Boyd - Northern Iowa. 6'2", 320 lbs. Decent mobility for a 0-tech guy, takes on and beats double-teams, not a terrible pass rusher. Does not have the long arms Steelers like with their DL, however.

Maybe Denver will take a 6th round pick for Courtland Sutton. The Steelers can give him a little more guaranteed money up front. Bring back Cameron Sutton on a cheap one year prove it deal as he gets through the legal issues that are wrapping up. Bring back Eric Rowe and Myles Jack if possible on a team friendly contract since they provide decent depth and know the defense. I don't know if bringing Peterson back cheap would help or not.

I thought Eric Rowe played well for us.

Chiefs took Nourzad despite having solid starters at C and G. Same situation as steelers taking McCormick. Teams are really stocking up on OL.

I think another reason to draft OL ahead of time is because all of the soft practice rules have filtered down to college and HS. So OL need more development than they used to.

Comment on Sedrick Van Pran-Granger: Pre-draft, I noted that he was not my choice at C. Decent pass blocker but not a very good run-blocker. He slides off blocks too much, particularly in space.

He dropped to the 5th for a reason.

Really happy he wasn't our fall back option

Why are the draft shows listing Fautanu as a guard?
