Evaluating the first-round CBs

I sure don't want us reaching for a guy because he is tall or just fast or pick any other measurable. I would like to see us take someone at 15 that we can not pick the same skill set in the second round. About the only position I see that maybe worth the 15th spot would be one of the left tackle prospects if available. If we can not trade down and there are no really good offensive or defensive linemen that fit our scheme I would think about tight end but we maybe able to pick up a more rounded player in the second or with our third comp pick. I just don't think the players available at 15 are that much better than what will be there at 25. I would also consider trading up if we had a partner that was reasonable and we could get a real great prospect.

One other thing I would consider at this point in thinking about the draft, what if a really good qb prospect fell down to 15. I don't have any favorites nor have I evaluated them but is this time to draft Ben's replacement and give him some time to develop before throwing him into the game? Say Ben has three years left as a starter if he does not get injured. I remember all the years with out a real good qb and not being able to find one, maybe if one of these guys drop it is the time to take him. Finding franchise qbs after making the post season is not a likely occurrence, unless you guys think this team will be worse than 8 and 8 next year and we will likely have a better chance then.

They are the 4th/5th WRs in the draft depending on whom you ask. If you think they are that poor, tell me the difference, OTHER THAN HEIGHT, between Beckham, Cooks, and Sammy Watkins. I'll wait.

Hmmmm... how about- Stature?

I never said they were poor at all- and everyone of them is likely to go in the first round. But its kinda hard to just throw out height/size entirely, because it is pretty important.

That being said, back to your question- if they all were the same size I would definitely lean towards Cook. For speed and for his production at OreState

Both will be better pros. That one was easy!

You know who was even taller? Plaxico Burress....

I never liked Plaxico. Massive underachiever. Hate that type of player that just settles with being good when they can be elite. Hated it when the Steelers got him back from the Jets - all the same bad habits and washed up to boot.

Blake Bortles is the only QB in this class that I would put in Ben's category and he'll be gone by the 4th pick. Johnny football will be a very good QB but his style of play is suited for longevity in the NFL. bridgewater can read defenses but lacks the accuracy to get the ball where it needs to go. The rest, including Carr, are going to be serviceable backups during their careers.

I say take Fuller at 15. He is not only the safest bet for a corner to become a good starter, but his physical skills are about as good as dennard and gilbert.

I personally like Cooks because of the 4.31 plus the 24 td's he had last year. I think any of them has more long range potential to help this team at 1-15 than any of the CB's. But I will admit to not being as concerned about the defensive backfield at this point as I am wide receiver.

Just for comparison, Rod Woodson who was picked tenth overall by the Steelers.

As football player, athlete and person, Woodson grades out near the top

"In early 1987, Woodson participated in the NFL Scouting Combine, running the 40-yard dash in times of 4.31 and 4.33. He had a 10-foot, 5-inch broad jump, 36-inch vertical leap, and a 3.98-second short shuttle. By today's standards, those are good numbers, but not great."
Now we are picking very close to where Rod Woodson was selected this year and entertaining the selection of a defensive back, corner back to be precise. There is lots of talk how this guy is this or that so for comparisons sake compare your favorite pick to Woodson. I have the web page listed that deals with Woodson out of Purdue prior to his being drafted. How big a gap is there between him and what we have to choose from? I am not a draft research guy like some of you folks and find the best analysis on here. Just thought this might be a fun comparison, for any of you that are interested. Also we do have hindsight on how good Woodson will be but not on the others but at this point in time we know he is good.

bump since CB very likely at 1:15.

I like Dennard's physicality, but does he have good enough speed and can he adjust to avoid all those PI's in a flag happy league???
