If the Steelers are going to sign Bud Dupree to a long-term contract, the key will be how much and how they structure the guaranteed money.

Time to back up the truck and pay STUD Dupree

yeah, the guarantees usually go along way in signing a player long term.

Tag him, no giving him long term deal after one good season, not with the other guys that need contracts that have shown up and produced in non-contract seasons.

he just can't let it go. Best way to protect TJ from double teams is to negotiate a long term deal with Bud after tagging him.

I'm not against that, but why would he sign a long term deal if we can't offer what he knows other teams can? TJ Watt did fine getting sacks when Bud wasn't playing that great in 18 and 17. They'll still double Watt over Dupree, if Dupree is here.

If we can get Dupree long term at 13-14 per range, then I'm all in on that.

1st thing dump the following players is a no brainer
Foster
Chickello
Barron
hargrave let walk
possibly Vance but you gotta use a 2nd rounder to replace him
maybe let tyler go

Smith replaces Barron at MLB
Gilbert replaces Tyler unless big red is willing for a very capo friendly deal i.e 3 years 5 mill
Vannett could be more useful with a qb like Ben another alternative to have a solid incline blocker would be Mercedes Lewis 1 yr vet min.

Cost for Hargrave will be just to much plenty of dual nt/NG that when we line up in the 3-4 are better vs the run and can get a good push in the 2-4-5 as withy tuitt back it will a heavy rotation of Hewward Tuitt Tyson and Buggs extra to spell cam and tuitt and just eithier keep big Dan who is getting better or a low key big DL like Carl Davis Phil Taylor Sheldon Day

The Steelers don't usually offer big guarantees compared to other teams and I see no reason to change that for Bud. Maybe for Watt or another player of his caliber but not for Bud.

Uh oh, are you saying Bud "Stud" Dupree isn't a top tier OLB? That won't go over well here. ;)

If he gets franchised he doesn't get a chance to see what other teams will offer. He is stuck with us for the year and then you negotiate a deal. This really isn't all that hard to figure out.

I know that. My point is, you don't think his agent will be asking around to see what other teams would've given him??? I mean just because they tag him, doesn't mean he and his agent are locked away in a room with no communication for the year, his agent will still know if say Miami was going to offer 18+per, with a ton of guaranteed money.

The leverage goes away when the team slaps the tag on him. They'll have to fight to find a middle ground on the cost per year but there's also the 30% rule due to the CBA expiring. This is why the article states they will need to make up for the per year salary with a bigger than normal bonus.

Why is the non-exclusive franchise tag not being considered here? Doesn't that mean we can offer him a first round franchise tag deal and get the pick if he signs elsewhere?

I definitely wouldn't put the exclusive tag on him. If we don't sign him long term, we will lose him next year. I'd rather put the tag on him so we can get a 1st rounder if someone offers him a contract and we don't or can't match it.

tag him and I dont want Clowney asa replacement like some websites are suggesting. he is to inconsistent while bud finally showed he can be consistent rushing and playing the run.

I think we also need to draft another linebacker in this draft. Dupree could go belly up after he gets the big contract ( like so many do). Plus, we need quality depth anyway behind he and TJ. If we don’t land Dupree, expect us to use our 2nd or our comp. 3rd round pick on a linebacker for sure.

He will get FT'd and hopefully sign a long-term deal before FA starts.
Bud's agent knows what he is WORTH on the free market.
I'm guessing that # is close to 18mil per season. We can argue if he is worth it, but like the article said,
the PS look willing to pay it. I know the 18mil per season looks astronomical (and I agree). However,
that's the going rate for a guy with his stats.

really astronomical for a guy with one good season.

I think he will disappear after he gets paid. I'd let him walk. Next man up.

This. Lamar Woodley 2.0

Difference is, it didn't take Woodley 5 years and a contract year to show up. Woodley had like 40 career sacks, 13 PD's, 7FF, 7FR, 3INTs, 67 QB hits after 4 seasons already when they signed him.

Dupree in 5 seasons has 31 sacks, 9 PD's, 6FF, 3FR, 1INT, 50 QB hits.

Yet everyone wants to give big money to Dupree.

For comparison, Watt in 3 seasons has 34.5 sacks, 18PD's, 15FF, 4FR, 3INT's, 70 QB hits.

LET.HIM.WALK.....hate the thought of signing him when he didn't show up until his contract year.

i think tj was getting doubled team all this year with bud

No doubt Watt faced a ****-ton of double teams, but I can tell you that after Hines mentioned that Dupree was seeing some double teams as well, I watched the last 4 games (minus the Az game since I was there and a bit liquored up) and sure enough, Dupree was getting quite a few double teams (10 or more) per game.

I actually saw teams use the OT and TE on one side against Watt, and the other OT and a RB against Dupree, at the same time. If you can, watch when Heyward gets pressure. It is usually in exactly that scenario.

Further, if the Steelers could get a replacement for Dupree with his ceiling, I would say "Go for it!" But a replacement is going to cost as much or more than Dupree. I think Dupree found his spot at ROLB, is working damn well with Watt, and adding Tuitt to the mix promises a very good pass rush in 2020.
