Initial Thoughts on bungle Game

QB- Wilson was so up and down. Had good throws dropped and had open receivers missed. The potential game winner to GP was just heartbreaking. If he throws that anywhere near GP heading towards the end zone and game over.

RB- neither guy looked good yesterday. We don’t have the passing attack to not have a running game.

WR- I know everyone is going to just blame GP for the drops but playing devils advocate two were phenomenal defensive plays. Got hands on the ball and Knocked it out. One pass was a high throw. Yes, he’s paid to haul those in but they definitely weren’t gimme’s either.
Where was anyone else? My over/under for Williams was 150. He ended the season at 132. I should have took bets. He did have one nice haul though. Just would be nice if he was more than a one trick pony.

TE- I love Muth but I tell you when the game is on the line do not throw him the ball. That drop was worse than all three of GP’s combined. Like the Vikings game Ben’s last year. Hit him in the hands and dropped. He’s a 59 minute guy.

OL- I think the Steelers can’t rule out 3 OL with a first in a row. Wyatt Milum Could be s name to look for. Dan Moore is a low end starter. I honestly gave him a chance. But he is what he is at this point. Still believe a move inside and he’d be a quality starter.

DL- Heyward is an ageless wonder. Didn’t like his attitude about the contract last year. Ended up loving the contract Khan put together. It’s basically an earn it each season extension. He earned 2025 to come back. Benton, Ogunjobi, Herbig, Watt all played well. They were one of the few bright spots.

ILB- I think we are deep here with no studs. Payton Wilson still has the upside to be but he showed a few rookie moments yesterday. Just had to see it to react. I think he can get that where he reacts and makes plays when the game slows down for him.
Queen isn’t better than a healthy Holcombe imo.

CB- Trice had his hands full yesterday but going against the best in the biz I feel he held his own. Couple costly mistakes but this is pretty much his rookie year. Porter played better yesterday. Beanie should start at nickel.

S- Elliott is the best safety on the team. Fitz needs to start making more plays. I would probably look at a potential replacement in that 2-4 rounds next draft.

This is a Tomlin coached team. I don’t care who we play first round I’m taking the other team. After next week it will be at least 9 years since a playoff win. I have a son who plays football (flag) that has never seen a Steelers playoff win. Just think about that.

Russ reads defenses more like a high school quarterback than a 13-year NFL veteran. It's either a moonball or a checkdown most of the time. It's that simple. Saying Russ can read a defense better than Fields is like saying that shlt tastes better than urine.

No one said the offense was great under Fields. But the Steelers were moving the ball because they were converting the 3rd- and 4th-and-1s with Fields. Russ can't even fall forward for a yard correctly. Just because they happen to have the same sack percentage doesn't tell the whole story. Anybody with eyeballs who watched the first six games can remember several sure sacks by unblocked defenders evaded by Fields. How often does that happen with Russ?

Fields had a number of deep passes completed that were called back by penalties. Maybe you have a faulty memory and can't recall those.

Newsflash: Russ hasn't been winning shlt lately. He's lost 4 in a row without scoring more than 17 points in any game. The Bengals passing defense was 24th in the league. He scored 44 points the first time against them with little dump-off passes. They adjusted, took those cheap yards away, and you get last night's result: 148 yards and a 78.4 passer rating. Pathetic.

if you've watched the steelers the last few weeks and came away with Russ as the main reason for losses, i don't know what to tell you.

Just last night, those dropped balls were huge. If Muth catches that last one, the steelers probably win the game. The point of the drop was close to FG range and he would have run for a few more yards. The probably would have clocked it and kicked the game winner.

Bengals game 2 was one of the worst Offense performances I've seen in a while out of the Steelers.

The first touchdown was a gift, two DPI calls late on the drive, the second one of which was one of the worst calls in our favor the whole year....

Hurry up Off sparked a decent drive in 4Q.

In my opinion, the game was as close as it was as a result of Cinci missing RB Brown the whole game, and Higgins going out in the second half. Otherwise, despite some effective adjustments, this would have been a 30+ game for the Bengals.

Lots of ripping on Tomlin, but he's not the sole problem. We have a an atrocious coaching staff, top to bottom. Outside of special teams, our staff sucks. I expected better out of Arthur Smith, but he's playing with a horror movie on-line. Our T's suck, the guards are inconsistent, the rook C looks like he can play.

It's time for a new staff, top to bottom.

A while since like last year? That felt like a relatively routine offensive performance.

I get 84 needed to spell Warren when 22 went out of the game, they need to give up on that assignment. He doesn’t block well. Get 83 some HB reps and have him as the 3rd/emergency back. The guy had a descent career at Michigan. Would clearly be better than Patterson at this stage of the game.
Connor Heyward went to Michigan State, not Michigan.

Russ is one of many reasons. But I'm not going to overlook his shltty performance because the team is also lacking in other areas. If you watched the 6 games with Fields and the 11 games with Russ and came away yesterday with the assertion that Wilson is clearly superior, I don't know what to tell you. You're kidding yourself.

If Russ hits a wide open Pickens the play before, there would have been no "probably" about it....the Steelers would have won. But he didn't.

Drops happen to every quarterback. You were talking sack percentage like it was gospel. Fields' receivers have a 4.3 drop percentage. Wilson's drop number is 3.0%. Doesn't support your argument.

Drop percentage last night was 12.9.

Because the season average doesn’t have anything to do with what happened last night, now does it?
The season average has everything to do with the discussion about which quarterback has had a higher percentage of his passes dropped this season. That's what averages are for. That's why it's stupid that you keep bringing up that Wilson played better yesterday than Goff is playing tonight...and it's not even true.

So if we’re comparing season averages, I guess we can expand that to career averages? 12.9 is way above either QBs season average and it played a major part in last nights outcome. It absolutely did.

Goff has two interceptions and is an officiating error away from having a safety against him. Wilson never had that kind of game with the Steelers.

Yes, because a 36 year old Russ is just as good as the version from 10 years ago.

Russ had a shlt game with or without the drops last night. You obviously can't admit that. And you are probably the only person on the planet who woud take Wilson over Goff at this point of their careers.

He’s still better than Fields and you cannot admit that. Google the all-pros surrounding Goff and then get back to me on how he would transform the Steelers offense.

Nah, see, he isn't. Fields only had one game as the Steelers' starter where he had a passer rating lower than 90. That was his final game, a 32-13 win over the Raiders in which he also ran for 59 yards and 2 touchdowns. Russ, on the other hand, has had 3 such games, including his last two, which were both losses.

But don't let facts stand in the way of your undying love for Russell.

I've been comparing apples to apples with the two guys who have actually played quarterback for the Steelers this season. How or why you believe that your hero is somehow better because Goff is having a below average night, is off-topic bullshit. Commonplace from you.

Smith is too concerned where he's going to be next year and it's not in Pittsburgh.

Fields QB rating was high because he took few chances. QB rating matters little anyway. Steelers average more points with Russ than with Fields.

In this argument you do have the advantage of simply assuming Fields will play great.

Fields was "benched" for a reason. His last couple games it seemed like he had regressed. The steelers are not doing either qb any favors with the clueless game plans. We attempted 8 passes the first half and I think 7 were on 3rd down. The QBs / WRs have to play perfect ball to get anywhere which is not sustainable.

It’s not off topic at all. Successful QBs can struggle particularly against strong defenses or when their OL or receivers let them down. Wilson’s rating would have been significantly better had his receivers not dropped 4 passes or made plays on 2 other catchable passes. Saying Fields would have done better is mere speculation and no more factual than saying Detroit or Minnesota would be better with him at QB.

The comparison between the two would be more in line with experience, which Wilson has a significant amount over Fields. Russ has a better long ball, but Fields has better range, zip on passes and is more athletic at this time.

However, the majority of why Russ started was based on experience, which definitely did not show on Saturday. There were major QB decision miscues particularly on the last series which cost opportunities. Most egregious was the poor pass to Pickens on that last drive and not throwing away the ball or reaching out of bounds to stop the clock.

There were decisions on the sideline that were miscues, the obvious 4th down in the first half. Should have challenged Warren’s down by contact (as he wasn’t until after he rolled over the tackler backwards). Should have punted it anyway, as Corliss was nailing his inside the 15.

Of Pickens drops/targets he should have had at least two catches. However GP has a tendency to palm/grab one handed catches on contested balls. That needs corrected. The one pass on the inside slant, would have had only had a 3 yard gain so that drop was of no-consequence and stopped the clock anyway.

As for Trice, he looks like he will be a keeper to grow along with Porter, felt like he did his job well. The All 22 isn’t available yet, but some talking heads are speculating his backend help erroneously rogue blitzed (again) on Chase’s TD.

Tell me, what chance does Russ take when he throws the ball 50 feet out of bounds? The 44 points he put up against the porous Bengals' D which jacked up his average is a distant memory. 17 against them last Saturday is closer to reality.

I'm not assuming Fields will play great. I'm assuming he'll play better than Wilson because he can make more plays with his feet. You're assuming that Wilson gives the Steelers the best chance to win...after he just lost 4 games in a row.

Yeah, the reason was that Tomlin had anointed Russ as the "starter." But I do agree that they are both handicapped in this offense.

And if your aunt had balls, she'd be your uncle. You keep myopically complaining about drops in a single game while ignoring the overall drop numbers in 2024, because those facts don't fit your narrative.
