I used to have a ball coaching Pee Wee/ Rec football & won some championships too. Parents made my decision to stop easy. Once a few of them suggested I and the coaches were too rough on the young lads for the amount of cardio exercise and repetitive drills
I've coached too many sports to mention and the parents can either make your (unpaid and volunteer) job really easy or they can make you want to quit in a heartbeat... My favorite (sarcasm) parent was on a Jr. high wrestling team I unofficially helped/volunteered with because my brother in law was on the team.
She caught me unaware when she grabbed my arm as I was leaving a triangular...
Parent: Little Johnny is the best 105 Lb. wrestler you have. Why is he on the "B" team?
Me: Say what?
Parent: Little Johnny is undefeated this year on the "B" team and it is too easy for him. He is getting bored.
Me: Little Johnny has his chance before every meet to wrestle-off against the A team guy and he gets pinned usually within a minute. We have also let him wrestle off against the 115 and 125 and he cannot beat either of them. Now, we do have an open weight at 100 lbs. ( I already knew the kid in question usually weighed in no higher than 103 and when I had the 100 lb. conversation with him he let me know his diet was primarily fast food and ice cream) If Little Johnny would change his diet a little bit, i think he could win county at 100 lbs. I agree he is very good, but we have a national champ at 105 and county champs at 115 and 125.
Parent: What?!? What!?!?!?!?! Little Johnny doesn't need to change. He is perfect the way he is and the way he is makes him your best 105 lb. wrestler. You are just playing favorites with this weight class. What is sad is Little Johnny looks up to you and respects you and you are letting him down by keeping him out of your starting lineup.
Me: I'm glad to have Little Johnny on the team and I think he is a great kid. If he wins the wrestle-off, I will have no problem putting him in our starting lineup. If not, we do have an opening at 100 lbs...
Her: (Some sort of audible whining growl escapes as I walk away...)
Unfortunately, there are always those parents that can't believe someone is better than their kid... I'm sure a lot of youth coaches have the same issues and similiar conversations... What made it the worst in this case is that a wrestle-off takes all favoritism out of it... you are either better or you are not...
