Noooooo (Tomlin 2 year extension)

This line of thinking is just horse-crap. Cowher's team was 8-8 in 2006. That is what Tomlin inherited in 2007. I'm sure nobody in that locker room thought it was anyone's team other than Tomlin's team in 2008 and 2010.

This is horse crap. In 2006 Ben was hurt in a motorcycle accident, had an appendectomy and a concussion. Almost every single starter on offense and defense from Tomlin's 08' SB team was from Cowher. He's had a franchise QB since day one. Hell he's 8 years in and still can't field a defense without Cowher's players. Last year's defense was the worst since Noll's last year.

All this means is more of the same.

Obviously many are content with "never having a losing season" even if that means missing the playoff and a bunch of one-and-dones. Last I checked we don't hang banners for "longest streak without a losing season".

The tougher schedule will expose this team once again as being nothing more than average except for what Ben brings to the table vs. the opposing quarterback. It's a 9-7 season coming up and the Tomlin apologists will still defend his "no losing seasons" till the cows come home.

Three underachieving seasons for every good one. That's what you get with Mike Tomlin.

Don't care what color he is, Tony Dungy he ain't, that coach built a team twice!

You were among the few. Most here hated him. They loved BA and his "Go long" philosophy. Most blasted Rooney for "forcing" Tomlin to hire Haley and fire BA. I remember the posts the first year Haley was here and it wasn't pretty. Now everybody loves him and they always wanted him.

I used to pitch a fit when under Arians we would like up in shotgun on 3rd and two. Straight letting the defense know we weren't running.. also I wanted someone who would make Ben better instead of relying on his physical gifts that would eventually be diminished.

So now injuries are an excuse cause I remember our Online being decimated and not one **** was given by the bashers. **** there are people pissed we lost to the Ravens with out arguably out best player(Bell) in the playoffs.

The wildcard with tomlin's teams was the drastic change in direction the league went regarding defense in the middle of it... its hard to say if the defenses inability to restock itself was poor personnel decisions, poor development, or just a team that built itself for hard hitting defense then had to totally change direction and scrubbed a bunch of years of drafting because of it. like I said, the next few years will write the story on Tomlin's tenure... can he win with a team that is 99% developed under his watch

Say WHAT? The Bruce had about three apologists on this board and the vast majority wanted him gone two years before he got the ax, including yours truly. I was a little shaky with the Haley hire because he came across as a nut case in KC and his first year here wasn't good but I was willing to see what he'd do in a second season and it was greatly improved. Me and most of the board were pissed off at Shades, Colbert, and the Rooneys when they didn't fire The Bruce immediately after the loss in Cleveland and leave him behind if not throw his sorry *** into the frozen lake.
"We don't adjust our game plan based on weather conditions."

The steelers are turning things around because recent drafts have been better. It's my opinion that over the last few year, Colbert was given more power in the draft, taking some away from Tomlin.

Then why did the Rooney's hand him the keys for more years if he was the reason for the poor drafts and the poor play and everything else he get blamed for. The man has built a prolific offense and can't even get credit for that. Anything positive just can't be attributed to Tomlin. Has to be someone else. Yet he is getting extension after extension by the guys who know exactly what's going on a daily basis.

Tomlin is what he is, a mediocre coach with a great organization that has coddled and protected him. Will be interesting watching him go forward as LeBeau has left as Ben gets older and we really see what imprint he can put on the team. After 8 years it is really hard to point out anything he does extremely well, clock management, game day coaching, situational coaching and in game adjustments are far from strong points with the guy. Last year we played the second easiest schedule and had an injury free year on offense. This year the offense will not be as potent and injuries will probably occur making 8-8 a real possibility for Coach Cool Shades .

Imprint??? How about a wide open offense that is totally different then the 3 clouds of dust offense we had.

Because more than anything else, the Rooneys believe in stability. Coaches don't count against the cap.

I've explained my opinion on this before. Cowher won a power struggle to get Donohoe fired as GM. Colbert was then hired and was not even given the title of GM. Colbert was essentially an administrator but Cowher clearly had the power in the draft.

Tomlin gets hired and immediately, the type of players the steelers draft changes. Most notably, they start stocking up on defensive players who are a perfect fot for a Tampa 2 defense, the scheme Tomlin knew.

It appears to me that Tomlin maintained Cowher's influence in the draft.

Now when we look at the past 2 drafts, there appears to be another change in philosophy. Why? Most likely reason to me is the power shifted. It should also be noted 2012 was the first draft when Colbert held the title of GM and it was around then the draft philosophy seemed to change.

As for Tomlin building a great offense. When did he do that? What i saw was Tomlin piss away a good part of Ben's career while allowing him to play street ball under Arians.

The Rooneys fired Arians and hired Haley. That wasn't Tomlin's doing.

So Colbert is responsible for Dri, Jarvis Jones, Shaquille Richardson, Terry Hawthorne, Mike Adams, Ta'amu and Chris Rainey? Glad we've got all that settled. [/sarcasm]

Was Ben really a "franchise QB" when Tomlin got him or was he a "game manager" who grew into a franchise QB under Tomlin and his coaching staff? Would be interesting to read the posts from that period of time.

I believe he was a franchise QB.

I remember Bochamps pointing out a play, a game winning TD Pass in the Cowboys game, Ben's 4th start that showed that he was not just a game managing QB.

It was apparent early on in his rookie season that he was a special QB that you could build your franchise around.

Ben went 13 - 0 his rookie year. Won a SB in his second. Yep. I agree. I think everyone knew he was special.

Oh, it's on now. The Steelers just extended Colbert. Let the flame-throwing begin.

Steelers extend Kevin Colbert

The GM was extended through at least the 2018 NFL draft. Colbert, 58, has been with the team since 2000 and has been GM for the past four seasons. Said president Art Rooney II: "Kevin's work and footprint on our football operations have been a key factor in our success."

Popcorn is ready :) Let the internet flame war begin ...lol

There is no "I" in Colbert. There is an "I" in Tomlin.

Hopefully with more head explode-i-ness.. I have no dog in these fights... I think there are better and worse coaches and GMs out there.. I wont lie...I just want to see net rage... its been a while....

oh, here we go with more 8-8 and 11-5 seasons! :)

After the first loss of the regular season, that's when the real bitchin' will start. It should be lukewarm until then.

So Ben just developed all by himself apparently. Cause there are Alot of instances where QB flames out whether it's because of himself or coaching. Ben is not the same guy he was when he was drafted. He has improved. And like it or not the improvement has come with Tomlin at head coach. But of course the head coach had nothing to do with any of that.

Just saw this posted under the Tomlin thread... Delete or move if mods want to keep them together.
