I start at the very top because that is who directly started the downward spiral which is what we see on the field today. Art Rooney II and the Rooney rule was the direct reason WHY we hired Mike Tomlin. Their liberal and "progressive" ideology has single-handedly ruined the Pittsburgh Steelers. You don't hire anyone because of the color of their skin whether it's black or white you hire someone based on their abilities and attributes. Not a defensive coordinator that ranked 31st in pass defense whom happen to be a formed defensive back. Art Rooney II should step down because he is the Daniel Snider or Jerry Jones of the AFC North.
Second person to blame is Mike Tomlin. Whether he is qualified or not it IS his job to have this team prepared, have the ability to make game time adjustments, keep the team motivated, and develop the personnel you have into quality NFL players. He has failed on every level mentioned before. He is the black Barry Switzer.
I put Colbert down the line because he has had success in drafting when he had a competent head coach. I feel he is likely drafting better players than they appear to be under the current coaching staff but the fact remains he is extending and overpaying players who are not very good. Marcus Gilbert is so god awful it almost makes me cry to know he will hinder our ability to sign another quality offensive lineman for 2-3 years at the minimum. Just because he had a good camp and looked good in practice does not negate the FACT he has never looked good during the games. The team has to be willing to let underachieving players leave even if it leaves a hole that will need to be filled via the draft or in free agency. I want to know WHO would have given Marcus Gilbert 5 years 30 million with 8 million in a bonus? Answer? NO ONE! Let him walk see what is out there and then sign him for a friendly deal if you wanted him back all the while paying him his rookie contract this year. Cortez Allen whom the FO like more than Keenan Lewis so they let Lewis walk and keep Taylor and now overpay Allen. Bad, worse, and ugly! Pouncey they overpay (though so far he has looked better this year than the past few) but I just don't think a center who is maybe slightly above average deserves LT money. I just don't. Matching Manny Sanders tender last year then LETTING HIM WALK this year. If you did not have a long term contract worked out you take your third round pick and move on you don't amplify your poor decision on which tender to offer by not letting the Pats choke on their obvious ploy to make us spend more money on Sanders. Then the drafting has been sub par since Tomlin took over. I am not sure who all to blame but the player development is not what you need to put a competent team on the field. The 2008 draft class IMHO is the worst draft class of all time for the Steelers. And 2009 would have been a bust year if not for the fact we got several serviceable years out of Wallace and one out of Lewis.
Todd Haley is next in line because I do feel bad for him in the sense he was brought in because Art Rooney II is a moron. He and Ben are like oil and vinegar, fire and water, or whiskey and my penis. They just don't mix well. His offense is so predictable that I call the play before the snap. To be honest I feel his offense needs a Dri Acrher or McCluster to function because he has to use misdirection to create mismatches because he cannot beat a team straight up. The only time the offense seems to function is when Roethlisberger runs a no huddle and is allowed to call plays and audible out of them depending on the defensive look. The irony is that is not Ben's strong suit. He's not a cerebral QB who is playing chess out there on the field. He's a checkers kind of QB who create big plays by extending the play. He usually gets a pre-snap read and if it is not open creates time to find his second or third option. Todd Haley needs a QB who gets the ball out quickly and doesn't make mistakes. Just not a good match. Sadly I think Arians and Ben worked better together and if we had Munchak and a RT with him calling the plays our offense would be much better off.
Dick LeBeau is just not what he was 10 years ago. He is an innovator of the zone blitz and in his day knew how to create mismatches. In today's NFL the QB just dumps the ball too quickly for his scheme to work on a regular basis. In the old days our OLB's were regularly matched up on TE's, RB's or just totally unaccounted for but today I rarely see JJ or Worilds NOT on an OT. I think it is time to bring in a new coaching staff which sadly means this HOF and great person has to leave.
And finally I blame Goodell and his touch football new style of NFL that us true blue football fans are being forced to swallow. The problem is I don't think Goodell is doing it on his own but with the guidance of the NFL owners who want to see the game so parallel that everybody has a shot every week and 8-8 teams in the playoffs will be a regular event. They want scoring, no hitting, and people not disinterested in week 15 because their team is totally out of it. The problem is the league will not change so the team has to. I said it years ago when I first saw this coming that I would only draft DL who can get to the QB and DB's who can catch the ball. I don't care if the DE gives up big run plays as long as he sacks the QB and causes bad throws or strips. I don't care if the CB gives up an 80 yard TD as long as he has a pick six. I would draft mostly offensive players and try to out score other teams only caring that my defense is capable of sacks and turnovers and hope they do at key moments during the game.
Solution? Fire the front office and coaching staff. We need a Chip Kelly who in an innovator of the game. We need someone to revamp this team in their own image and keep the good and throw out the trash. Someone who can develop and motivate players. The only good thing is if we go 4-12 is I believe Tomlin is fired. I either want him to right the ship and win 12 games and get us to the Super Bowl or I want us to fall on our face to we can yank off the band-aid and be done with this!
