With the Pittsburgh Steelers first preseason game completed, the excitement and energy building up to the regular season continues to grow stronger each day. The Steelers will attack a schedule that is the NFL’s toughest and no one feels sorry for them because of that. As much as I would love to write that the Steelers will not lose a game this year, they will, and multiple at that. Here is how I see the 17 regular season games going for the black and gold.
It is not going to be easy going up against this high powered offense in Week 1. Let’s hope Josh Allen comes out slow because of the massive contract extension he just signed. Ben Roethlisberger cannot turn the ball over like he did in Week 14 of the 2020 season. Overall, going to be tough going to Buffalo in Week 1 and pulling out a victory.
The home opener with what we all hope to be at a packed house in Heinz Field gives the Steelers their first win of the season. Najee Harris scores two touchdowns against a defense who allowed 24 rushing touchdowns last season and makes his first big mark as a rookie.
Back to back wins at home get the Steelers over .500 for the first time in the young season. Joe Burrow can’t figure out the Steelers defense, throws an interception to Minkah Fitzpatrick and Alex Highsmith‘s strip sack is recovered by Cameron Heyward late in the fourth quarter ensuring a Steeler victory.
Going into Lambeau Field and beating the Packers is not foreign to Roethlisberger who is 2-0 in cheese-head land in his career. Weather should not play a factor in early October and this shootout is led by Diontae Johnson who catches 10 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns. Chris Boswell kicks the game winner as time expires.
The Steelers were lucky to escape a loss to Denver last season. Coming off a big win against the Packers and looked ahead to a big game against the Seattle Seahawks, the offense stalls a bit and the Steelers lose their first game at home of the season. Roethlisberger’s two interceptions prove costly.
A safety early in the game makes the difference when the clock hits 0:00. Both teams run the ball effectively, but the ground game for the Steelers is able to chew clock at the end and secure a win. T.J. Watt has his best game of the year with two sacks and a fumble recovery.
By far the ugliest game of the season. The Steelers get revenge after losing to the Browns in the playoffs back in January. Both Watt and Myles Garrett wreak havoc all game, but it is the Steelers bye week (7) that has them prepared and conditioned to pull it out in the end. Boswell hits his second game-winning field goal of the season.
The Steelers are rolling. Harris is only behind Trevor Lawrence for the Offensive Rookie of the Year award and the defense is leading the league in sacks yet again. A newly promoted Justin Fields has no answers for the Steelers defense and turns the ball over three times.
The winning streak continues here. JuJu Smith-Schuster catches a season high 12 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns. Harris and Pat Freiermuth also catch a touchdown pass each. Roethlisberger tears apart a Lions defense that was one of the worst in the NFL last season.
Playing on the West Coast has never been one of Mike Tomlin‘s strong suits. Justin Herbert has a field day throwing for 300 yards and three touchdowns. Steeler Nation is all over SoFi Stadium, but the winning streak is snapped after four in a row.
Joe Haden and Cameron Sutton both end up with interceptions and the defense shows out once again. The offense starts out slow in this one, but it becomes a game of field position. Pressley Harvin III pins the Bengals inside the 10-yard line four different times throughout the game which creates a short field for the Steelers offense in the second half.
The first game of the year against the Ravens is not a good one for the Steelers offense. They total for just 250 yards and Justin Tucker‘s three field goals are the reason the Ravens come out on top.
Harris averages 4.8 yards per rush and has a dominant, two-touchdown performance against the Vikings. Kirk Cousins throws two interceptions and the Steelers come up with a big road win late in the year. Haden locks up Justin Jefferson and holds him to just three catches for 39 yards.
The toughest stretch of the season is here for the Steelers playing four playoff caliber teams in the final four weeks of the season. Derrick Henry runs all over the Steeler defense, but Harris and the Steelers offense keep up. Fitzpatrick intercepts Ryan Tannehill late in the fourth quarter to solidify a win.
As much as I want to mark this down as a win, I can’t see it happening. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs high powered offense is too much to keep up with and the Steelers let up a season high 38 points.
The Browns are simply too talented to lose twice to the Steelers nowadays. Baker Mayfield leads the Browns down the field in the final three minutes of the game and Nick Chubb scores the game winning touchdown with just 0:40 left in the fourth quarter.
The Steelers finish the season strong and slip into the playoffs as a Wild Card as Chase Claypool scores two touchdowns. The Ravens have already clinched a playoff spot so several starters are not playing in this one.
A 10-7 finish to the season with the toughest schedule in the NFL has the Steelers primed and ready to make a deep postseason run.
