49ers RB Marcus Lattimore announces retirement
49ers running back Marcus Lattimore said he's retiring from football because he's been unable to get his knee "fully back to the level the NFL demands." Lattimore suffered serious knee injuries in 2011 and 2012 while playing for South Carolina.

"After prayer and careful consideration, I have decided it’s time to end my professional football career," Lattimore said in a statement. "I have given my heart and soul to the game that I love, and it’s time for me to move on to the next chapter of my life and help others. I have given every ounce of my energy toward making a full recovery from my knee injury, and I have made a lot of progress. Unfortunately, getting my knee fully back to the level the NFL demands has proven to be insurmountable."

Lattimore began practicing with the 49ers last week but experienced soreness and was not able to continue. South Carolina's all-time leader in rushing touchdowns (38) and total touchdowns (41), Lattimore never got to play a snap in the NFL.

dude suffered one helluva gruesome injury in college. kudos for even getting back to almost-NFL readiness.

I feel bad for him. As Brittany Griner would say, his opportunity to excel in the NFL was tooken from him by some horrific knee injuries.

One of the most horrific leg injuries I have ever seen. From all accounts he is a smart kid, good head on his shoulders, and with his fame and notoriety will have no problem in the job market. I could see him being a football analyst this year still.

Good kid, I hate this happened. He has a lot of potential employers in the area though. He should be fine.

That's just heartbreaking. Hoping everything works out in life after football for the kid

feel sad for him, hate career ending injuries

Sad to see this kid likely missing a very rare opportunity but in hindsight did we not have several guys singing this kids praises before the draft we took bell in? It just illustrates how an injury can destroy a career in athletics for such a promising young man. This was not started to say I told you so but rather to show that in addition to being good you also need some good luck so you do not suffer that career ending injury before you get started. Makes the recovery by Spence even more note worthy.

My best wishes and prayers go out to Marcus Lattimore. May God continue to bless him in the next steps he takes in life...

Good thing we didn't take him like many SN GMs would have. That thread would be longer than Archer's.

Indeed, I remember quite well the number of people wanting him. I don't know how early though, if I recall it was later.

didn't the 49ers just activate him off some pup list? I wonder if they forced his hand to either decide to play or leave the game and cash in on
an insurance policy which I am sure he bought while still in school.

Go forth young man and pursue your lifes work. PEACE

Salute the nation

If I remember right,TMC wanted to take him instead of Bell. Not as early as Bell was taken perhaps but to take a chance on him later. That sure as **** would not have worked out.

he practiced a day or 2 with them and his knee blew up again...the writing was on the wall...shame.. what a talented RB..

This is why I never have a problem with guys trying to get paid, and why if you're sure to be a high draft pick, you should leave school. I just can't see leaving life altering money on the table, especially if you come from a poor background.

yes, he suggested taking a late pick on him if he were there.
6th or so, I believe.

A lot of us wanted to take a flier on Lattimore. I would have been thrilled if we had. Thank goodness we drafted Bell even though most of our resident draft experts called it a major reach...

I remember there was quite a debate at different times about different guys in the run game and there were some folks making quite a case for this guy, complete with the usual predictions of this guy will do this or that that always shows up in the threads. It is sad for this young man that his time in the nfl is over and that he did not get to have the success many thought he should have. I always feel sorry for a kid in these circumstances that has had his dream destroyed. Contrast that to a piece of **** like Leaf who had the world by the *** and pissed it away and is now in prison or just recently out of one. Life is many times very unfair.

Watched him play all through high school and college, kid was amazing. He was like Bettis, no matter what the down and distance, just give him the ball and most likely he would get the 1st down. Usually way more.

Too bad he just didn't have the body for what he was good at.

It would be nice to see him suceede in his next career.
