Solutions to NFL dilemma?

I do wonder how many jobs would actually cancel work for a death let alone a medical emergency. I work in a bank and legally couldn't close. We could shut the lobby for a short period of time but we would have to remain open during the entire event and afterwards. I mean if a factory had a guy die at work I would bet his department or line would stop but the rest would continue on. In college I worked in a factory and a guy crushed his hand in a hydraulic press. After the blood was cleaned up I got to go run the press. Was probably shut down for less than an hour. Not saying it is right, just saying some of these ex-nfl players need to stfu about how their job is hard. Their job isn't in the top 100 of dangerous.

If the game is not played tomorrow and is not then the only possible solution is lengthe season. Like it or not it's gonna be winning percent. No one will miss playoffs who should have made. Seeding and home playoff will definitely be affected. They will buy off teams most affected.

So you think that starting a game in the first quarter, where both teams are expecting to play a 4 quarter game is the same or equivalent to OT.
You could have ended the question at “so you think?”. It is an entirely appropriate question.

Bills forfeit? How is this any different than my idea of calling the game?

Jesus. Are you really this stupid or just pretending? For the love of God, I hope it's the latter.

To repeat - read it this time - I say the options are:
  • Have them play the game tomorrow and adjust the other games.
  • Not play the game and adversely affect the entire playoff structure.
If they set the game for tomorrow, and play, there you go. If the Bills forfeit, then it is what it is.

Not playing the game is the only option that is bullshit.

Got it? If not, have a 2nd grader explain it to you.

Then don’t suspend the game indefinitely.

“But some things are more important than football and it had to be suspended.”

Agreed, then it’s not that big of a deal to just call the game and proceed, is it?

Why not just "call the game for the Bills"? Nobody ******* cares that a team leads 7-3 in the 1st quarter. That fact has literally zero bearing on who the game should be "called for." Seriously, not one ******* bearing. Zero. None.

So why not just "call the game for the Bills"? If you are tempted to say "because Cincinnati was leading 7-3 in the 1st quarter," please don't bother and just say instead, "Because Floggy is an imbecile."

I'm not trying to be a douche here, but we had our Plant Manager pass away unexpectedly the week before Christmas, aged 44, who had a wife and kids. Sucked big time and sent employees home the day we heard (Friday). We were open on Monday. At some point, professionals have to be professionals and move forward. Damar is recovering, which is great, so let's move forward.
This.
We all know life is more important than "the game".
But, we've heard players and the league ALL refer to this as a business.
And let's be honest, it is, especially because of the amount of money we're talking about.
It doesn't just effect the players and coaches from Buffalo/Cincy.
Vendors, sponsors, season ticket holders, concessions, local businesses, taxis, etc.
It's a LONG list of people who see the trickle down.

It goes without saying we all hope the best for Damar.
But life goes on.
I get they don't feel like playing in the moment, but eventually life must go on.

Almost none. I was handling a trial about 20 years ago with a co-defendant. The co-defendant attorney's teenage son committed suicide about five days into the three-week trial. The judge was empathetic but pointed out that getting a jury qualified for a 3-week trial was a huge burden on the court system, these jurors had already committed five days to the trial, so the trial went on.

No, but short of the remainder of the game being played before this weekend, it’s the best way to determine the outcome.

Go ask someone for a hug, grumpy. The Bengals winning is the only OBJECTIVE decision about the outcome that can be made absent of the game being resumed and played in its entirety. If they never resume the game, it gets called. The Bengals had the lead, they win.

My uncle had a stroke in the middle of his work when he was in his early 50s. He ended up surviving, but not "living." He was always really outgoing, athletic, and funny. After the stroke and subsequent strokes on the way to the hospital he was mostly paralyzed on his one side and gave up on life and just deteriorated over several years before passing. His plant did not shut down. Im not saying the NFL should not have cancelled the game, but when it comes to celebrities and athletes people become ultra sensitive. Football is game, but its also a job and a business. I am sure stories like my uncles or even worse happen daily at various work places and they must continue on. Now the NFL has put itself in a bind. There is no fair solution. If they add another week to the season every playoff team would get a bye week while Cinci and Buf are playing. I dont think this is realistic given the logistics and what not. I have a feeling they will end up just scrapping the game, going by winning percentage followed by the traditional tie breakers.

I'm in the funeral business. As we say, death doesn't take a holiday. Although I do get an official bereavement leave, I worked half days the week my Dad passed away in October 2021 except for the day of his funeral when I took a full day off. We were busy and I had stuff to do and people to take care of.

Stephon Tuitt comes to mind, to a degree.

Life does go on and yes Prayers to the fallen / injured.

You nailed it, it affects all involved including the little guys (taxi driver, etc.).

It was announced that is will not be played this week and not sure of reschedule time……… basically I think it will just not be played at all. They will see how this week‘s games pan out then make perceived adjustments from there. Those “perceived” adjustment are by the NFL perceive, not us common fans.

i've been thinking similar thoughts. I have gotten a little salty over a couple of things. All the talking heads now want to condescend to us and tell how the game isn't that important, it's about a young man's life and all that. All very true, and I could not agree more. But then stop having a 2 hr pregame show to a Thursday night game in September between the Panthers and the Falcons or something. And then another hour afterwards analyzing said game. It's ridiculous. And if football or sports in general ain't that important, how damn important is a sports journalist...the people condescending us? Lastly, if it isn't that important, should players be demanding huge salaries for something so unimportant? Should teams be charging so much for tickets and everything else?

I've been thinking about this. The Bills and Bungles are in the playoffs anyway. Path of least resistance is for the Bills to just forfeit the game.

It really is… it totally ***** the Ravens but nothing is sweeter that Harbaby tears anyhow … technically the Bills are still alive for the top seed even with a loss last night

When I was fresh out of the ICU and still half dead in an isolation ward, I had to remotely troubleshoot a job in Arkansas from my hospital bed in PA or it would have failed… the show goes on and you have to perform when the curtain come up even if you don’t want to..

The NFL was 100% right in calling the game yesterday because nobody knew if he died or not… there just needs to be a late season solution for extreme emergencies

Definitely. The way things stand now, after the announcement, the game more than likely will not get played anyways. They should have said “take the field” last night even if an hour or more delay. Now turmoil and no disrespect to the injured but.

GREAT post diver, thank you

Even more reason they should have taken the field last night. Give the appropriate delay and bless the injured, but also keep on track.

Will the NFL continue to postpone games upon serious injuries? Change the schedule for a league wide week off to make those games up. What if one team is involved in two game shut downs…….

As bad as the injury was and Believe me I want the kid to be well, but remember he is getting the best care available. Better than any of us common folk would get, wether the game is being played or not.

So the NFL put off making a decision. Bold.

Wonder why they didn't follow your brilliant advice and flip a coin to determine the "winner."

Go ask someone for a hug, grumpy. The Bengals winning is the only OBJECTIVE decision about the outcome that can be made absent of the game being resumed and played in its entirety. If they never resume the game, it gets called. The Bengals had the lead, they win.

Dealing with dumbfucks - and make no mistake you are the dumbest **** ever to stain the planet - means I don't put up with stupid **** from stupid *****.

It was 7-3 in the FIRST. QUARTER. If it was 37-7 in the 4th quarter, fine, I get it. But once again, declaring the team leading 7-3 in the first quarter the "winner" because they led 7-3 in the first ******* quarter is stupid. Just admit that idea is ******* stupid.

Sorry, you are unable to admit saying something stupid because of the stupid thing.

On the other hand, as mentioned elsewhere, in 2020 the league made the Steelers play 3 games in 12 days because of Covid effing around with the schedule.
Still, I think the best thing for the Bills is just tell Goodell and the league to **** off, we forfeit, and we're just going to get ready for our next game.
We're not playing and you can't make us. 😛

The problem with making these decisions are they set Precedent, and in a union run environment that is very important… beyond that you don’t want to set a poor example with a bad standard… lets say the league forces a tie, or a forfeit… then maybe some shady teams tries to fake something later on… or way worse… tries to downplay a major injury to keep a delay from occurring…
Though I suspect the big hangup is figuring how not to **** the Ratbirds owner who is Rogers BFF
