Solutions to NFL dilemma?

Probably been mentioned already....BUT why was the same consideration and subsequent far reaching implications not generated by the apparent total paralyzation of Ryan Shazier on that same field in 2017?? The Steelers had to finish the game. I don't see this as too different, so why the huge difference in response?
I think the main difference is Shazier was not dead at any point and Shazier was able to at least give a thumbs up. Shaziers situation was very tragic and emotional, but I think he was able to communicate. Not quite the same as someone who had no heartbeat and was literally touch and go and still not out of the woods. Moving forward I think we will see some scheduling differences to allow more flexibility for life changing injuries.

Forfeits are rare in the pros but they happen in lower level minor league sports from time to time… its almost always because an accident, illness, or event causes one team not to be able to play… it’s rarely the fault of that team, but they are still responsible for the loss… sometimes life deals you lemons…
Yes, but they could have played. The NFL and both teams agreed to not play. If Buffalo walked off without agreement from the Bungholes and the NFL, then I can see it being a real option. Right now, the only team/person that can decide to forfeit the game is Buffalo. They can't be forced to do it.

If it is truly about this young man's life, first and foremost, nothing else should matter. The NFL shouldn't worry about fairness or lack thereof. All that should be secondary and teams should just suck it up.

He got hit so hard it knocked him into next week.

Right. It is the righteous indignation and condescending that is happening all over. Look, if they couldn't complete this game or they are going to cancel other games or do all kinds of maneuvering or whatever the hell...out of respect for this young man, then go all the way. Don't half *** it and make it a token show. I'm tired of that. We have way too much of that in society right now. All about appearances. If they are really serious, cancel the rest of the season now, all of it. Playoffs, Super Bowl and everything. Put some real action behind all the indignation and condescending. If not, shut the hell up and play.

It sounds like it’s not out of the question that this weekends Bills game gets postponed as well.

Well that is probably going too far. Though I think the Bills will have a heavy heart and likely little fight (to the determent of the Steelers situation) I think the show must go on at that point. They are not the first team to suffer tragedy in season. And tragedy is tragedy whether you witness it or not. I was all for postponement or even cancellation of the Bengals game. Bills Pats is too far. That will create a scheduling entanglement that will lead to an illigitimate champion in my opinion. The wonky Afc bye NFC wildcard is about as far as I can go with this.

I’d say it’s going way to far. I’m thinking the NFL isn’t as open to this idea as they are letting on and are just worried about being perceived as insensitive to the Hamlin situation as he’s not yet “out of the woods”.

In talking to ICU nurse friend his medical situation likely comes to a head about Friday. At that point they will likely start to move him out of the deep state of medically induced coma and assess him. Is the league going to decide about Sunday then?

News reporting a few minutes ago that he is awake.

93.7 reporting that Florio and Schefter both tweeting out that the NFL will rule the game a no contest. Florio is often wrong but Schefter isn’t.

Absolutely correct.

Sorry for the injury and wish him best in recovery

They should have came back out and finished the game or declared Wednesday or forfeit.

Now the claim of “righteousness” yet not following through is asinine as best.

What are the implications of that? Does that mean it won't be played or only that whatever took place on Monday doesn't count, or both?

I would expect the NFL to make Buffalo forfeit the game and them compensate them by giving them both Pittsburgh’s 2nd round draft picks this year and fining James Harrison $50,000…

If the news continues to be good watch how the tone of everything changes from only concern for the player to how it effects the teams.
It damn well better not. Not with all the preaching about how the game isn't that important when a life is on the line, and fans don't know what these players go through and all that stuff. Everyone should accept whatever decision gets made in light of this situation.

Agreed, but likely won't. As soon as it looks like he will live a normal life the news cycle will flip. Maybe not in the news world, but in the sports news world.

Potentially helps the Bills get the #1 seed, possibly screws KC, Cinn and Baltimore.

Eight playoff teams is really interesting. I thought the NFL had the perfect system with 6 and I'm really not a fan of 7, but given this year, 8 makes sense given all the tiebreakers in play this week for both seeding and playoff teams.

The neutral AFC Championship game is an idea, but I think I'd rather see some sort of tiebreaker in place for homefield in the AFC if any combination of Buffalo/Cincinnati/Kansas City make it. Maybe the largest point differential in the playoffs gets homefield advantage in the title game?
