Even the most ardent Tomlin opponents know our likely 9+ win season is not going to lead to his firing by the Rooneys. No amount of debate is going to change that.

But with Tomlin currently under contract in both 2015 and 2016, should the Rooneys (Art Rooney II primarily) decide to give him a 2 or 3 year extension after this off-season like they've done in the past when he's had 2-years left on his deal?

No debate necessary. No Cowher comparisons. Just a simple vote.

Since the beginning of the season I said I'd wait to see if they make it to the playoffs, if they didn't I would fire him (if I were the Rooneys). Right now I'd only give him an extension if the team makes it to the Conference Game.

I think I would replace Colbert no matter how we finish. While hitting big on the offensive side of the ball, there has been too many misses on the defensive side. Not really sure who is more responsible when it comes to the draft Tomlin or Colbert, but something needs to be done on the defensive side of the ball.

If it ended this year I would not extend his contract. Since it ends in 2016 I would wait and see how the team does between now and then when deciding to extend but I wouldn't extend his contract until after the 2016 season.

*EDIT*
It doesn't matter though because in ten years he will still be here.

I say no. Simple reason is the state of the team. 12 and 11 to teams with lousy records. Several poor drafts and free agent acquisitions. Should the team continue to finish strong and play in the post season I would not terminate him at this time. Should he continue to improve the team regardless of record, by improve the team are we in the games we lose from the beginning and not just garbage time getting close. What has been done to improve the weakest areas of the team in the off season. Does he appear to be doing better in situational football or not. Still lots of things to look at for this guy.

Totally agree. 8-8, 8-8 the prior two years. Preparation is still a question mark / coming out flat over and over. Clock management, in-game adjustments.

You have two years left on your current contract. If it's my $ & my team, I say show me improvement in those two years and we'll go from there. Just because we "always extend with 2 years" doesn't mean we always have to.

We use to be a FG only offense. Now with Bell,Brown and Bryant and a improving OL we are becoming a elite offense. That is a huge improvement. Now we just need to do the same on D.

If they win out (which gives them the division) and win at least one playoff game, I'd think the Rooney's consider the extension now. If they get to the Conference championship, I'd say it is virtually guaranteed they extend him.

No playoffs or no playoff win and they don't extend at this time.

No reason for extending now. Just like the players...let him earn it. Everyone knows we won't cut him loose until his contract is up regardless of what he does or how he performs. If we make a change, it will be with the FO and GM role, IMO. Which, in this case is sorely needed.

you really think he deserves it? what merits has he earned in the last four years?

I am not saying he unequivocally deserves an extension at this point. And if we miss the p'off's- I would definitely wait until next year.

Colbert and Tomlin have made HUGE strides on the OF, but this defense is in the middle of a huge transition. I think simply making the playoff's would show huge strides and would certainly open the conversation for extension talk (and rightfully so). But to have Conference championship game expectations, considering where the defense is now, is almost comical.

My point is- maybe youre setting the bar WAY too high.

get as wild card and win, then win the divisional game. I'm asking for Two playoffs win in what? 4 years?

This x100. I don't care about how it was done in the past, or the "Steeler way" or whatever. Its way too early to be even talking about renewing the contract. After next season would be the proper time to talk about it.

And what I am saying is that 2 playoff appearances in 4 years- which coincide with a huge roster transition? That is impressive- how many teams could say the same?

I would think winning the WC game alone would be a huge move in the right direction, and would likely lead to an extension.

The probabilities:

Sneak in Playoffs- 50%
Win WC game - 90%
Win Division game- Prepare yourself for 10 more years of "Fire Tomlin Threads"

Which reminds me, a subject for its own thread, but Toddster's contract expires after this season.

I know we aren't supposed to reply to a thread on the internet... but. I voted no because even if Tomlin gets us to the playoffs this year for me we would have to win the super bowl to get an extension. I don't see that happening so I would play the wait and see approach and see how the team plays next year. If we regress I would say let him go. If we progress then I believe the extension discussion should start.

How come there is not a "**** NO!" option?

Funny. I think hat sums it up best is all of the "If we make the playoffs, it's proof that we have an awesome coach" stuff.

Here comes an avalanche of movie gifs, lol

Seems to me that's why we hired a defensive "guru" as head coach...

Waiiiit, wait now. Are you suggesting there may be more to evaluating a coach than counting the number of wins and losses in his coaching history?

Next you'll be telling me his SB win from six years ago shouldn't even be considered! Yeesh.
