Steelers -clowns game thread (1st matchup)

NO, The HEAD COACH is hamstringing our QB’s. He has been doing this FOR YEARS. I tend to believe that Big Ben did alot more of what ever the he!! He wanted to, than he was TOLD to do.

You must have missed my quote - "our Offensive play calling (handcuffed by Mr. We don't Live in our Fears) is as bad as it was under Canaduh."

I'm blaming Dumblin.

I give the reigns back to Justin and without him having to look over his shoulder for Wilson. Unleash the kid and let him play, lets see what he really has, screw that 4th round pick.

Wilson is done. He is old and and slow, when he took off running last night it looked so bad I was wishing he could run like Ben and Ben had a 4 minute 40 time. People keep talking about Wilson like he is still the Wilson that played in Seattle, HE IS NOT!! I don't think his play in Denver was a fluke, I think he is done and as of right now over rated. Russ was great at one time and will surely be in the HOF but he does not give us our best chance at winning right now, especially behind this O line.

I give the reigns back to Justin and without him having to look over his shoulder for Wilson. Unleash the kid and let him play, lets see what he really has, screw that 4th round pick.

I agree with a lot here, but have one concern…………

Tom Lin hasn’t been able to turn a QB loose in how long?????? He even tried to handcuff Ben ROETHLISBERGER, WTF…………….

Tomlin has the biggest failure in NFL history in the O’Canada experiment. Then he seems to hire a legitimate OC that knows something ONLY to handcuff him into the Tom Lin scheme and philosophy.

There is no way any player / coordinator / assistant coach is ever going to be truly turned loose.

that's just the thing, though, they don't let ANYONE play, they let them go out and make safe little 4-yard dump-offs outside the hashes and every once in a while, a 12-yard post or a moon ball to appease the masses. it doesn't matter if it's Russell, or Justin, or Kenny, or Mason, or whomever, it's the same dumbass pisspants-scared, overly-conservative garbage from one week to the next. when russell first started playing, you could see them loosen up the reigns a little, but sure enough, dr. platitudes wasn't about to let his tried-and-true system be supplanted.

What I really hate is running three stupid super conservative plays, then running a super aggressive 4th down attempt but with some hair-brained cute attempt...

If you are gonna be aggressive, be aggressive, fine... If you are gonna be super conservative then do that.

Its the flip flopping that drives me nuts...

And at the end of games for the duration of the tomlin era, our O almost always is able to make plays... because its repressed.. we dont use the whole field... we are really predictable

Tomlin isnt a bad coach, but he lacks the ability to play to get substantially ahead in the first half...

We score and then try to sit on it.. or fall behind then push for a score then just take our foot off the gas...

The D is ok... it shouldnt need to protect a one score lead every damn week...

I’m leaning towards he is an average coach with above average talent. Does the least with the most, simple math.

You’re spot on the taking the foot off the gas syndrome, but then he has the Tomlinship awards to justify his brilliance.

I think Dr. Platitudes allowed Russ to uncork a few cuz he was pissing his pants that he was about to lose his best (and damn near only) offensive weapon.

They simply have to 1) begin using the entire field again 2) not run every damn first down 3) incorporate play action into the scheme and 4) call even mildly intelligent plays if they’re gonna go for it on 4th down

If they do those 4 simple things we’re 9-2 likely 10-1 right now in all honesty and everyone would be drinking the kool aid and the only one that goes against the Dr. Platitudes scheme is using the entire field (that’s the one that may take some convincing for an OC to get that much leash)

He really is.

This.

Call me out if you wish. The love-fest the media has for Wilson is like the love-fest they have for Tomlin. They are propping both up to be more than they are.

At this point, I would like to see Justin. He 'might' (low odds) develop into something. Russ is a stop gap and giving us no more production than Fields did.

Wilson's come back to earth.

Fields had 6 starts, Russ has had 5.

Russ has been sacked 16 times in 5 games (15 times in the last 4 games). He's not getting rid of the ball quickly.
His comp% is 63.1%. Fields is 65.8% as a compare
Russ has 7 passing TDs in 5 games. The last two games, he has just 1 TD and that came after 7 no-TD quarters in a row.
Russ has 1 rushing TD and 24 yds rushing on the season.
He has three turnovers - 2 INTs and a lost fumble.

Meanwhile Fields had 5 passing TDs in 6 games, 1 INT, no lost fumbles, and FIVE rushing TDs and currently has 274 yards rushing. Fields (with his legs and arm) accounted for 10 TDs and ONE turnover to Russ' a 8 TDs and 3 turnovers.

Give me the dual threat.

Meanwhile, as others have said, our Offensive play calling (handcuffed by Mr. We don't Live in our Fears) is as bad as it was under Canaduh. Look at the passing chart last night. If Russel Wilson is such a GREAT passer, why did we not use the middle of the field? 2 shots the whole game to the middle of the field? Only 6 shots beyond 10 yards?

View attachment 13439

This is v the Rats. 8 passes beyond 10 yards. 3 to the middle of the field.
View attachment 13440

Look at this shiz v the Jets. What??
View attachment 13442

But in NE, with a ROOKIE QB, they make these attempts including 12 passes beyond 10 yards and a lot of passes to the hashes/middle of the field.

View attachment 13441

Our Coordinators hamstring our QBs. We all know this. It's to the point of absurdity.
Justin played admirably when given the chance, Russel is playing just as well. I agree Fields gives us a dual threat that Wilson doesn't, but he just doesn't give us the same ceiling in the passing game. He's not a good passer, never has been, and looks like a deer in headlights/ one read and go QB. Not to mention the botched exchanges with the center. I have never seen that many in a 6 game period, including the one that cost us the game, not all his fault but he was QB.
Wilson has allowed Pickens to be the more consistent also getting Austin involved with more catches. You cannot blame Wilson for short passes in a blizzard against the Browns Defense and Myles Garrett.
Bigger issue is the Run game, Harris is still not good outside 3 games against 3 of the leagues worst teams, Warren hasn't been healthy and is playing better but hasn't improved with Smith either. Run game was supposed to be Arthurs strength? He is failing miserably in the red zone and cannot covert on 3rd and 4th and short to save his life.

Will agree to disagree then, which is always fine. I want offensive production. Justin had a slight advantage (2 more TDs) with fewer turnovers. And fewer sacks. And a higher completion %.

The exchanges would only improve with more snaps. Wilson has looked below average the past couple games and his sacks (many due to inability to find a wideout and holding the ball too long) have cost us.

His ceiling at 35 is probably past. Justin could develop into a threat. Could. No guarantees.

At this point, I call it a wash save for the difference in legs.

The BIGGEST issue is the play calling, especially given the passing charts I showed. Like these

1732410116566.png

In week 3, he hit every part of the field however. Russ hasn't done this yet.

1732410343821.png

In week 4, a little less attacking of the middle of the field. But 312 yards passing.

1732410393680.png

Week 5, 2 TDs but a lower completion %

1732410593629.png

I balk at the claims he can't pass. Fields currently ranks 21st in completion % (65.8) to Wilson at 32 (63.1%).

Everyone is blaming Russ, Tomlin, Smith, etc. We don't have a receiver that can get open consistently in the middle of the field outside of Muth...and he has to help block a lot of the time.

Williams is a deep ball guy, we needed a Stefon Diggs type. I guess they were hoping Austin would be that guy in the slot...never materialized.

Russ is doing good with what we have. Remember we came back and got the lead late against the Clowns on a short week in a snowstorm.. then the defense broke down

The charts are great, but Fields didn't pass the eye test like Wilson has.

Your eye test is evaluating only one factor then in a QB's skillset.

Add in the OL Woe’s.. I swear we have the least productive OL coach ever. No one seems to progress up, but some seem to regress down. Isaac Salomlu (sp) has regressed, just an example.

Collectively the interior of the offensive line is playing well. Based on what I've seen, Jones has improved over the past few weeks while Moore has regressed closer to normal. The problem is there is too much pedigree for this unit as a whole to not be performing at a higher level. The Steelers didn't invest money and draft picks into the offensive line to be a middle of the pack unit. They expect to be an elite group up front.

100% agree with your point that shades chooses to be selectively agressive in the most mind numbingly stupid ways and times

Fields had 150 or less passing yards in 4 of 6 games. Thats not an NFL QB, completion percentage means nothing when you aren't putting up any yards, and barely any touchdowns.
Fields also held the ball too long, didn't put up any points. and has the leagues worst TD to turnover ratio for his career.
But who knows maybe he'll become the next Joe Montana if only he gets more opportunity?
It's only been 48 games

We did come back from 13 down in a snowstorm with radically different play calling than we’d seen the whole game this far, then got up by 1 point and went right back to conservative stupid play calling because Tomlin

It’s tough to say if we have the guys to make plays over the middle when Tomlin won’t call plays there hardly at all. Washington caught two balls over the middle and was wide open both times

Maybe they were trying to 'play it close to the vest' figuring they could easily take out the Clowns and keep stuff in reserve and new for later in the season...I don't know I didn't watch the replay. Then it started to get away from them and they opened it up. It was hard to tell with the snow.

Fields seemed to not be able to read past his first one.. Wilson has. But i was thoroughly unimpressed with him in cleveland. Just sayin.
Wilson just looks the part of an old guy
Gets his *** whooped by a blocking sled
Looks ok for a couple weeks after getting to rest a year
After a few consecutive games looks tired, hesitant, and every part of an old dude

Probably needs a few weeks off again to rest up

What was Fields TD to TO ratio with the Steelers

That stat that actually matters
Can’t fault a QB for being cursed by the Bears
