No. I read the Bears would want 32 and 49 to do this. Carter is not worth that.
Trade back, damnit!!!
Carter is one of the only elite talents in this draft, but the Steelers need to continue to build depth. I'd still prefer to trade back because over the past three drafts, the front office has done a pretty good job in the early rounds.
2020
1. Minkah Fitzpatrick
2. Chase Claypool - a productive starter as a rookie. I still think he can be a solid player, but the combination of a poorly run offense and maybe not the greatest work ethic (just assuming based on his performance) limited his potential. Either way, you cannot ignore his over 14 yards per reception during his first two seasons.
3. Alex Highsmith - very productive starter who can play the run and pass.
2021
1. Najee Harris - bad value taking a running back, but a solid player.
2. Pat Freiermuth - Already one of the top tight ends in the NFL. Probably should be a bigger red zone threat than he is.
3. Kendrick Green - a reach that definitely feels forced.
2022
1. Kenny Pickett - improved as the season went on.
2. George Pickens - Has star potential, but must continue to develop as a route runner.
3. DeMarvin Leal - Probably only a role player and a guy Austin must find a spot for.
Basically, the first and second round picks have been money. These guys are stepping in and contributing early on. Right now the Steelers have three top-50 picks and could get three starters. You definitely don't want to turn three starters into one with a trade and you better get an All-Pro if you move 32 to move up into the top 10.
I don't think any of the tackles are that level of elite, but Carter could be. Interior defensive linemen are quickly moving up into the category of premium players and Carter is probably the best player in this draft. However, this rumor feels more like smoke than anything else, especially after Carter declined a pre-draft visit to Pittsburgh.
