Steelers Draft Rumors

I don't think the market for WR's is as crazy as it was a couple drafts ago. I doubt they could get anything better than a 2nd for DJ and that's not worth losing him for. If they got the 12th pick, it would be an absolute steal. They would have to turn around and draft a WR no later than 32 though as he would have to come in and start almost immediately. In general, probably not a good move this year with KP entering his 1st full season as QB1.

I know a lot here are frustrated with D.J., but he is pretty good most of the time. It’s those drops and reverse gains that stand out due to them being at critical times, combine that with his new contract and we expect MORE.

The only way I’d trade is a 1st and a 6th., call me crazy.

More trade up speculation in the PPG today (Carter and Jones) some of it involving the #32 pick. I hope they don’t trade #32, too much potential capital in it and a whole day to let teams outbid each other for it.

Thomas?

Unless they are moving well inside the top 10, there is no way you trade #32 and I see no one worth going up that high to get.

I'm not sure there is anyone I'd give up the No. 32 for. The top-end talent doesn't seem to be as elite as it has been in previous years.

All I want is a repeat of 1974.

I recall reading the draft picks in the paper the day after the draft. Not many probably recall that the draft used to be held in February and nobody paid attention. I mean ZERO publicity. Also, I am pretty sure that Zona and I are some of the few who recall when newspapers printed certain information in the sports section in really tiny type. Baseball "player transactions" was one such topic. So-and-so went on the DL? Tiny type.

For the draft, no article, no big deal - just the names listed for each team, not the round, or what pick number, just the name. Anyhoo, the Steelers 1st round pick was at the very bottom of a preceding column in tiny type, so the first pick listed at the top of the next column was their 2nd round pick. I look at the selection and saw some guy named Lambert as their first pick. Da fuq? Who?? Then noted that the Steelers had selected Lynn Swann in the 1st - knew who he was, thought, "Okay, that's better."

I recognized two names of the 20 something they selected. Lynn Swan of course and Jimmy Allen the running back from UCLA who was selected fourth one pick before Mike Webster who off course I never heard of.

I followed UCLA back then and is the reason I knew who Allen was. Unless it was a guy who played for one of the big time programs I was clueless (still am). Offensive line, forget about it. Knew guys like Buba Smith, Ted Hendricks and a few others on the defensive front when they were entering the draft but not many.

By the way, Bubba Smith was taken number one in the 1967 draft, he had some all pro seasons but did not make the hall of fame. 10 players from that class (two were undrafted) made the hall of fame which is the most of any draft class.

One more tidbit, the Steelers of course traded away their first pick to the Packers and no, the player selected by the pac did not become anything special. The Steelers first selection was Don Shy ( running back) in the second round out of San Diego State.

By the way, I did not have this info on the top of my head. I Wikied Bubba and read about the draft class. Just throwing out some trivia so you can take a nap.

From memory only, I am certain that John Stallworth was the 4th round pick, and Webster 5th round. I think they took Allen later in the draft.

I recall the Stallworth pick because the Steelers REALLY liked him. The OC wanted Stallworth in the 2nd but Noll said no, took Lambert. The decision was problematic because the Steelers had traded their 3rd round pick to the Raiders for a mediocre DT named Keating. Noll vowed never again to trade away draft picks while agonizing as players were selected for two rounds before their 4th round pick came up, at which point they ran to the podium to select Stallworth.

Hold on, they simply picked up the phone. Another thing you and I remember that most don't know is that teams did the draft at their own offices, over the phone with the NFL. No "announcing picks" back then.

Yep, Stallworth was taken in the fourth but their second fourth round pick was Allen. I remember reading about the whole Stallworth shenanigans the steelers pulled like not forwarding his game tapes and Bill Nunn returning to time his 40 again the day after Stallworth ran a slower 40 in the rain in front of other pro scouts. Didn't learn about those things though until years later. Bill Nunn was a jewel.

Did not know that!

When you look at drafts from the 1970's, you will notice that VERY few picks were traded. And I mean VERY few.

Google steelers 1974 draft picks. Shows Allen in the fourth after Stallworth but before webby

I don’t think the Steelers trade up for a tackle imo. Not at least for #17 & #32. It’s a hunch but I feel they might have their eye on someone but not the guys rumored. I don’t think Johnson, Broderick Jones or even Jalen Carter is the guy they covet. IMO it’s Christian Gonzalez. They’ve showed interest but not overwhelming interest. He checks a lot of boxes for what they look for in a first round pick. Idk I just have a hunch. I very well could be wrong. Just that’s my gut feeling.

I remember most of that as well, but I got even less information as I lived a long ways away. The paper didn’t list full draft, just the first couple.

Baseball games had final score, sometimes a narrated version of the box score.

I struggled to find anything PITTSBURGH back in those days.

Monday night football had the highlights of all the games and that was the most I got on the STEELERS in action at times. UNLESS they were on TV or Monday night football.

Ahhhh, the good O’l days when nothing mattered……

Oh, I hear you, DIC, I grew up in Northern California so basically zero news about Pirates, Steelers or Penguins. I would buy the Sporting News, a weekly tabloid that had information about all professional sports teams. The baseball info was excellent.

I have been saying trenches for 3 drafts. at 17 I pick BPA. best safety best OT best DL best CB. pick the best please. dont settle at 17.
Don't settle anywhere. Stay true to the board at positions of need.
