Bernie Sanders barnstorms Bay Area with socialist populist message
SAN FRANCISCO -- There are few places in the nation where a democratic socialist independent who's mulling a presidential run would have more rock-star status than the Bay Area.
He caucuses with Democrats and is the Senate Budget Committee's ranking member, but he's the longest-serving independent in congressional history, elected to the House in 1991 and to the Senate in 2007.
"Bernie Sanders is actually doing what Elizabeth Warren supporters had hoped she would do, which is inject some progressive debate into the Democratic nominating process, and potentially help make Hillary Clinton talk about these issues," said Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics.
California Republican Party vice chairwoman Harmeet Dhillon said Sanders "makes some interesting points about dynastic politics, but
his class warfare and economic redistribution rhetoric harkens back to the days of the Russian Revolution."
