At a campaign event in Virginia, Donald Trump implied that veterans that suffer from combat-related PTSD were not “strong” compared to vets who do not.
“When you talk about the mental health problems,” Trump said, “when people come back from war and combat and they see things that maybe a lot of the folks in the room have seen many times over and you’re strong and you can handle it, but a lot of people can’t handle it.”
PJ Reikoff, CEO of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, responded in an eloquent series of tweets about how labelling metal health issues as weakness only increases the suffering of those afflicted, comparing Trump’s comments to a response to a similar question from Obama.

Other users on Twitter were equally outraged:

This is just the latest in a series of offensive comments Trump has made towards veterans over the course of his campaign. He has also engaged in a weeklong feud with the parents of a fallen vet, mocked war vet John McCain by saying “I like people who weren’t captured,” and failed to pay out the promised funds after holding fundraisers for vets
Due to the stigmatization of mental health issues, exact numbers are difficult to pin down, but it is estimated that between 11-20% of American veterans suffer from some form of post-traumatic stress disorder.
