As it stands now, California and New York are never voting Republican, and any Democratic Presidential nominee starts out 84 electoral votes in the bag.

Right...without the college at least every vote counts. Let's say 10mil people vote in California and 5.1 mil vote for clinton she wins the whole state. The other 4.9 mil votes are basically wasted. I understand about the small states being left out, but what does the president actually do for small states that he doesn't do for other states? I would rather know my vote at least counted toward something.

To protect the power of rural America/small States vs. the economic power and population densities of large cities/Big States. It's the greatest system in the world to do it this way.
