Well, that team was a perennial SB contender from 04 on. This core has missed the playoffs twice in a row and hasn't won since 2010. You're right; I surely don't know the future and anything could happen. But this team is just loaded with ifs.

As I remember the 2005 team had a few ifs and hadn't won since 1979. But maybe we just didn't have as many people to continuously point them out.

Yeah, we did, there were lots of discussions regarding going turtle, Marty Ball, 4 yards and a cloud of Dust, Bill was never going to win the big game on and on.

that and we somehow managed to get in as a #6 seed. what a ****** team that was.

Steelers are playing a 5-8 Atlanta team...Steelers lose and people lose their minds. I've come to the stark realization that Tomlin isn't going anywhere having 8 wins already, Lebeau will die on the sideline, and Bell is making Haley look like a genius with this running game. I believe that the moderators re-opened this thread because we're going to be having this very same argument next season...and the season after that...and so on and so on....and what's the use of starting a new thread every year?

BOOM! and did you see how quiet it got after this thread closed? Lol then people started making similar threads (polls) lol! I guess there's nothing else to talk about if it's not about Tomlin here. And I agree, Lebeau will probably "retire" on the sidelines one day before he's let go.

you give the moderators here too much credit.
****... COOLIE is a mod.

We will likely not be having the argument the season after he leaves, we will be having a new argument.

about the new coach

about the new coach

that guy is a complete dumbass. only hired because he spoke well. players have tuned him out and he's a jackass.

The 05 team lost 5 times, 2 with Maddox at QB. With Ben, we lost to the Pats, undefeated Colts, and division-winning Bengals and no one else. It featured several HOF players and a borderline HOF coach. There is no comparison, all tap-dancing aside.

Similar teams. LOL. Totally.

Yeah but, but, but we didn't win by enough points.lol

See my above post.

I think it's hilarious to see the cheerleaders try to compare this perennial 8-8 team that one, which rostered 5 guys with strong cases for the HOF (4 of whom WILL be in) and several others who were All-Pros. That team almost always beat garbage teams (and did well against good ones, too) and contended for the SB pretty much every year. From 2004-08, they went 53-19, with 4 playoff appearances and 2 SB wins.

Yeah, that's what we're seeing now.

In 2005 we lost Ben for 4 games because of a knee injury......Tommy Gun went 2-2. i remember when Ben went down. DD the owner of the board said we're ******, season over, and it nearly was because 11-5 was good enough for that last playoff spot.

10-6 you were on the outside looking in.

can I point out that one of those losses was to the 6-10 Baltimore Ravens that season, led by Brian Billick and 50-yards from his knees Kyle Boller, or is that a no-no, still? point being that great, or on-the-cusp-great teams do not lose to **** teams at all, ever, especially when coached by a very good coach, despite injuries of any kind.

See, this is another area in which you are full of ****. You are looking at things in hindsight, which is always 20/20. When they were 7-5 that year, I promise you, people were talking about them in similar ways to the way they are talking about this team. I remember the board after they lost to the Bengals. Most wanted Cowher hung in effigy. The way you say that is like there was this confidence that the Steelers were just going to roll through those last 4 games, the playoffs and win the SB.

I find it interesting that when teams win, players and coaches look like HOFers. When they lose, those same people don't look quite as wonderful. They are the same players.

Listen, I don't like comparing teams either, because what happened in 2005 has no bearing on today. I don't think this coach, for example, is in the same league with Cowher. I am really just pointing out that at the time that team was 7-5, there were not too many people calling anyone, especially the coach, a HOFer.

I have been here a long time and do not remember "Most wanted Cowher hung in effigy." I do remember garbage being dumped in turn over tommys yard. I do remember lots of bitching about Marty Ball and playing not to lose.

This is an example of waxing nostalgic. I am getting old. I find myself doing it too about certain things. Things were always better back in the day. However, I remember arguing on the board with a particular group of anti-Cowher people who wanted him gone. Their main objection was the fact that he had not won the SB in 14 years, there was no way he was going to win it now, whatever the hell that meant. How the prior 14 years had any bearing on 2005 I don't know. After the Bengals loss in particular it was brutal. The reason it sticks out is because Cowher was being blamed for everything, sort of the way Tomlin is now. I made a snide post on the board that it was just recently revealed that Cowher was seen on the grassy knoll. Everybody was saying it was the post of the day, which is the only reason I remember it.

There were DEFINITELY plenty of fire Cowher threads, and like you said, during that 05 season it was brutal! I remember there being a website devoted to trying to get Cowher fired. Most of the complaints were playing martyball, not being able to win the big games, and losing to lesser opponents.

Which has always been my point concerning Tomlin and Cowher. I read the board back then. Cowher was talked about the same way Tomlin is now. But now when you read the board Cowher is god. When you try to point this out you're called a nuthugger.

Well then quit with the huggin

Yeah but it will still be new, and we may resurrect the equivalent of the Gildong report next year with regard to Jarvis Jones the invisible linebacker.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Wingman again.
Gildong karma.

Once again a three game season, does he or doesn't Tomlin find a way to get this team to play consistent football?
