Canada Will Return in 2023

That would be the HC and GMs responsibility to have a team with better players. If I stock your fridge with beenie weenies, you can't get mad at the weenies for the absence of steak and lobster.

Stay away from my Frig., but you’re right you know……………

Ge3tting the least out of the most, seems familiar over these last several years.

Oh and I totally disagree with this:
since we have no control,

I think if the voices get loud enough and the results continue to match the complaints they will eventually make the right decision here. I'm passionate about this team. I'm personally positive this team needs to set a new course, so I'm always going to HOPE for the best and HOPE that I'm wrong, but push for change because I don't believe I am.

Coach Tomlin is our head coach for the foreseeable future, so I will obviously want him to turn things around and pull for him and this team.

O’Canada got his 3rd year stint, although controversial, I will obviously want him to turn things around as well.

The problem is that turning things around as of late is just beating sub-par teams, not making or barely backing into the play offs and calling that except-able. The PO blow outs are three in a row, and accepted by many as normal.

Excuses used continuously, eventually become reality. Could this be our reality ???

The Bungles are playing better than average ball, wouldn’t you expect them to lead the PO race as opposed to our STEELERS barely playing over .500 ball.

Imagine if we could get our players to play to their full talent and in a scheme that actually helped our guys in their strengths.

We’ve had talent capable teams but seems we get the minimal out of them.

I am partially on board. But too often I also have seen either the wrong free agent brought in, or ignoring an obvious weakness. Then there is their inability to attack those trenches early and often enough in the draft. Or drafting undersized projects because you like their athleticism.

The lack of good decision making handcuffs the team before they even see the field.

I will list some examples:

1. No true LT competition ignored in free agency and the draft
2. Going with Bush when they should have seen he wasn't the player he was pre injury.
3. Handing MitchT the starting gig because he was a veteran.
4. Not bringing in or drafting a true pass rushing complement on a scheme that is built on pressuring the QB.
5. Retaining Canada just because he is under contract. Not to be undone they already are putting in another poor decision pre 2023 season, retaining oh Canada yet again.

Oh I would definitely raid your fridge. We know you have to have some good country fixings camping out in there!

Absolutely slash. Tombert is officially split now and I’m hoping Kahn isn’t just a puppet to the Head Coach. They named him GM but restricted him from decision making by keeping Colber until after the draft. We don’t know what happens behind the closed doors, but why was it made so clear that the Tombert team was in-tact?

Things can change for the better and my demise is in hopes that they do, in all aspects of the team.

I hope they give the talent evaluation edge to the new GMs. Even more important I hope they build up the trenches into strengths. We have seen in the playoffs how important that is...

This is my feelings to a T. I badly want them to succeed and prove me wrong. I just don't see it happen. I was drunk on the Tomlin kool-aid till I took family to Pittsburgh and they lost to Mike Glennon Bucs. Now upsets happen. But after game I listened to a lot of disgruntled fans for quite a while. Then I continued to watch the games through a more neutral lens and after a while realized their complaints were justified.

And here is a point to end the Cowher vs. Tomlin debate. Cowher coached most of his career in the pre-stadium pre - modern NFL revenue era. The team was pretty damn close to being one of those professional farm teams where difficult financial decisions had to be made every year. You think it wouldn't have been different if they didn't lose guys like Brown, Woodson, and you might not like Neil but he was back to back starter in AFC championship. You think those guys are walking today. Hell they ADDED outside talent last year. When did that happen under Cowher.

The team does need a new course. But it will not happen because the voices get loud enough. No way. Not listening to the fans has worked out quite well for the Rooney's. Two examples off the top of my head are Bradshaw...hell the fans wanted anyone at QB but him. They even did a survey in the papers. Another is Cowher. Like I have been saying, there were a lot of voices wanting him gone for his continued failures in AFCC games. Thank goodness those voices were not listened to.

I know that and agree. But look at Diontae Johnson. The guy may be thew best route runner in the NFL. So quick in and out of breaks, the change of direction...he works hard apparently. So by all appearance the guy should be in that upper tier. You go into it having faith in that. Then he can't keep his feet in bounds or runs backwards or drops a catchable ball. I'm sorry, I just don't put that on the coach.

Jeff Hartings. Potsie. Will Woolford. They added talent in those years under Cowher. Losing Woodson and O'Donnell had nothing to do with their inability to pay. Donahue didn't want Woodson back and I don't think O'Donnell was coming back after the Super Bowl disaster.

I think Cowher was a better coach than Tomlin, so again this isn't some support of Tomlin. I take Cowher again in a heartbeat.

Hartings and Farrior were both post Stadium. Look we could go around on this point all day. Read Cowher’s book. He doesn't complain but anything , but most of the Steelers part is about losing x,y z player and filling that role. Tomlin has had his entire career on a level playing field the Steelers right up to the cap and Jerry riding contracts to keep overage veterans. None of that **** happened under Cowher. He duct taped it together 2/3 of the time he coached there.

I put that on the WR coach. But if that is a detriment to the team the decision to keep him goes back on the GM/HC.

A positional coach coaches up, a HC/GM weeds out the players who hold the team back.

Also if you have a positional coach not working out then who replaces him?

I don't want to put words in your mouth, but imo you are advancing a theory in which players are not responsible for their failures, it is always the coach. He is a WR. They are paid to catch the ball, in bounds, and run forward. At what point does it fall on the player? Are they robots you can just program?

And, dammit, I'm not saying the coach shouldn't be held responsible. I think it is too simplistic a view though to think just one thing is the problem. It is multiple things.

That revenue was a big part of Cowher’s battle. He always seemed to be b tattling that in the early days of his career (about first 2/3s). Once the revenue got more on equal terms as rest of teams…… you could see a big difference. ADD in what he got once the Franchise QB was added.

Cowher always had a competitive team or at least there was always a comfort of getting the competitive team assembled.

When was the last time ONE felt honestly that this Tomlinson lead team was going all the way?

I want Coach Tomlin to succeed, it’s just been awhile since I’ve seen a team I’m confident enough to feel we are going all the way…… prior to the start of the season.

In the long term it does always falls back on the HC. His decision making. He gets the credit when the team wins playoff games and the blame when they don't.

You will always have players who have different degree of success and failures.

But a great coach either puts his players in the position to succeed or surrounds himself with coaches that put players in a position to succeed.

Part of that happens before they even see the field. A HC has different philosophies. They like certain schemes and approaches. Like certain type of players.

After they formulate all of their likes and dislikes then they ultimately are responsible for season outcomes.

I have said this before and I will say it again without a sliver of doubt in my mind. If you get credit for winning seasons you also get blame for winless playoffs.

By your logic, if you have employees that consistently underperform yet continue to be the face of your business, then it's their fault for not training, demoting or firing themselves. Bad bounces happen and people have bad days, but consistently underperforming with no accountability is not the employees failure. That WR you're referring to showed the same deficiencies for at least two seasons and was rewarded with a contract extension and the number 1 position. I just can't continue to blame a man that's apparently doing the only thing he knows how, for being allowed to do it every week.

People who bitched about Colbert really needed to go back and look at those 90’s drafts and rosters… they were good, but mostly role players. Developed and used well… those weren’t all star teams

I watched my son play BB all through his school years, with the same Coach for years. It was a small school and he was a community member hired to coach. Because of this he had complete security in his job. His philosophy was that the older kid started and played the lion’s share of the time. Every year he started a different team, and utilized a different scheme because of the kid’s skill set. This in my opinion is what makes a good coach, tailoring you plan to the players you have. I get the pros are different, as you pick and chose your players. A good Coach still has to put players in a position to succeed, or get other players. MOST players are not really “moldable” by the time they get to the pros.

Completely agree. Which is why the "Tomlin won with Cowher players" is such a bunch of nonsense.

I keep using Diontae Johnson as an example. How has he not been put in a position to succeed?

Talent evaluation/development has been an issue for almost a decade. Too many mediocre players have been retained strictly because of draft position or lack of a better option. Not a good look when players leave and claim to have learned very little. Did Colbert lose his touch or is something else going on? Guess we'll find out soon enough.

What Cowher and Colbet were exceptionally good at was having the next guy ready. He didn't necessarily do anything his first year, but Cowher knew this player was ending his shelf life and had the next guy ready. I would argue this. Cowher had deeper valleys in seasons, but they were always followed by high peaks that they looked like legit contenders. Not 4 or 5 years of this fringe bullshit they have been.

Tomlin did not win with Cowher's players. BUT he only won big with Cowher's structure and big components of his coaching staff with an attack on defense mentality. not this passive Cover Two, defend the splash play at all costs.
