Pittsburgh anchorwoman sues TV station, saying she was fired because she's white

She commented on the March 9 shooting of five black people in the poor Pittsburgh suburb of Wilkinsburg.

"You needn't be a criminal profiler to draw a mental sketch of the killers who broke so many hearts," Bell wrote March 21. "They are young black men, likely in their teens or in their early 20s. They have multiple siblings from multiple fathers and their mothers work multiple jobs. These boys have been in the system before. They've grown up there. They know the police. They've been arrested."

Bell's comments sparked a backlash from some who saw her words as racist, but also drew defenders who found her post honest. Bell is seeking back pay, punitive damages and her old job.

You didn't answer my question

Bell apologized, saying her words "were insensitive and could be viewed as racist."

Is the Wilkensburg suburb predominately black?

66% as of 2010. I had a friend that was a cop there many moons ago.

I read her post when it first came out and immediately thought, uh, that sounds a lil racist. Moreso the part about seeing gasp an actual pleasant, hard working young black man in a restaurant. It gave her HOPE.

Didn't expect her to get fired over it though.

I don't see what she said wrong. Except about the mothers working multiple jobs. They're on welfare and crank out kids for income. Everything else was true about the ghetto.

Making this a broader subject, I find most of Western PA to be more racist than the average state.

I didn't realize until I left.

I moved down south, to North East FL, and the people here are FAR LESS racist than PA.

I know of many people up north who regularly use the "N word" and think nothing of it. It offends me. They make comments like, "Throw a banana in the cage" when watching hoops.

From what I observe, blacks and whites get a long much better down here. Is it devoid of all racism? I am sure not. But I personally witness far less racist comments than I do in PA.

Most folk in WPA live in a bubble. All they know is their little area of the world. And I was a perfect example until I got out of there.

People down here tend to treat each other with mutual respect and are friendly to everyone of all races.

I agree with POP

This whole Wendy Bell lawsuit has the potential to get really messy. Stay tuned.

I never thought much about it until I went into business. I wasn't raised in a racist family. When I went into business for myself as a contractor of sorts, potential clients would often ask either if I had any blacks working for me (sometimes yes) or where my employees were from which is code for are there any blacks working for you? Took me a while to figure out what that meant because I didn't see why where my employees lived was relevant.

Ah yes the color blind state of Florida.

I remember the Travon Martin/George Zimmerman case. Not a soul, not even Al Sharpton nor the media brought up race or accused the white Hispanic of being a racist.

I think some of the people in WPA are not intentionally racist, well-meaning but a tad backward and ignorant (a la Wendy Bell commenting on that nice hard-working black guy she saw as if it was some sort of pleasant surprise). I mean, I knew people who still called black people "coloreds" there and I honestly don't think they knew that term is frowned upon.

Head down to AL, MI, or LA and you'll find some people who actually thoroughly despise black people.

Hillbilly culture is everywhere...Arkansas, Idaho, Texas - you name it, not any better than the south. It's a culture thang.

It's the same for sure. I grew up just west of western PA., I know. these things.

Went to school at UGA, so to be honest there are some hardcore racist, but the South gets a bad rep cause of their history. From the sound of things, I think the North sounds more racist. But as some posters said its culture. As a civil society and me personally being a parent. I try to shield my son from the ugly side of society. Racism is alive and well today. I'm not one to point fingers and say I wasnt hired cause of my skin color etc. I think the creditantials behind your name make or break you in society. So every one is equal. But in other aspects of life I'm sure its worse. I never really experienced any hostility personally. So I'm biting my tongue on this one
