Basically now if a defensive player is in trail position of a ball carrier and grabs that runner from behind and drags him down, it’s a penalty.

I’d love to know how you are supposed to tackle somebody from behind and make sure that you don’t contact their legs in the process.

As soon as a ballcarrier gets in front/beside you, you can only tackle them by the legs. The NFL only cares about betting and FF...and 7 on 7 and flag football. Basketball on grass pretty dang soon.

Tackle low. Take out the legs. Going high and then lifting your legs off the ground while falling backwards will now be a no no. More flags will be thrown. More judgements calls will be needed to be made. The game is getting harder and harder to watch as a product. Most people that I knew as die heart nfl fans are now simply watching their favorite nfl team. And if they miss a game.....oh well.

Really? Did you defend Burfect when he destroyed LeVeon Bells knee? Its a ***** move.

Definitely has become a hard product to watch. I don’t even prioritize the Steelers on a sunday anymore

The product is trash. There's very little to like anymore. Can't go high. Can't go low. Can't go too hard. Can't block them while they don't see you. You can't gang tackle with one guy is behind pulling down while others are engaged.

You can hold the edge rushers all you want with the OL though.

I'm glad I was a kid in the 70's. From around 2011 on it took a serious downgrade. What kids get now is a pussified way overpriced version of American football with players who could give two ***** about winning a championship.

The amount of money involved has completely ruined it. The embracing and promoting gambling was the final nail in the coffin.

its been a while, but the video I saw that explained the hip drop required the tackler to grab then swivel behind and drop to the legs. A tackle purely from a pursuit position does not contain that swivel so I thought that would be legal. Either way, this is going to be like the tuck rule, the what is a reception rule and a bunch of others. 100 refs will look at the play and 100 refs will give different answers.
Best quote I ever heard about rules after the Megatron "no catch"....If 3 guys in a bar can see its a catch, its a catch. I get player safety, but this will be about as clear as mud.

James Harrison has already been fined $10,000.

I think that it's become such a massive investment on these players that even non QB big time players cannot be lost. There are about 6 or 7 guys who cannot be hurt. I don't think they give a **** about the player. Just the crazy investment.

He wont be affected because he bunny hops on the carriers back for a joy ride
You know what the best moment of the season was for me. When Jaylen Warren ran B gap and Bush was standing there in the same quicksand I'd seen countless times. One jump cut and walked in. **** I loved it.

he was a scumbag who celebrated Bell being injured. I don’t think most outside of Steeler fans thought it was dirty. I don’t think it was flagged or fined. The tackle itself was only considered dirty because of Burfict’s well earned reputation.

my problem is this proposed rule is vague and can be arbitrarily applied to nearly any tackle from behind where the defender leaves his feet. They are pretending like the ”hip drop” is a technique that is taught by coaches.

Just one more way for the NFL to control game outcome.
Bingo.

Should horse collar tackles be legal?

Many, if not most serious knee injuries occur when a player gets their knee rolled up on. This rule is meant to reduce those injuries.

This, another way to manipulate the game.

I’m near the same boat as Steelr4evr, glad I seen real men play football as a kid.

the league idolizes their manipulated goat.

Salute the nation

Real men drove their shoulder into the ball carrier, wrapped their arms around his legs and brought him down. The type of tackle they banned didn’t exist. There was a 60% increase from 2022 to 2023 and players were injured at a rate of 25 times higher than other tackles. There’s a reason the vote was unanimous.

To combat concussions High Schools started teaching the "hawk" tackle technique which has now led to players tackling the same way from behind...which is now illegal in the NFL. Screw player safety. You want to make millions, there is a price. What this really is, and it's been stated, this allows for game manipulation and nothing more.

Right. And I don't think it will be too hard to enforce. A player is grabbed from behind and the defender swings his body over the guys legs. The hip drops I have seen are pretty obvious.

Where the NFL is stupid is because of "safety" they do not tackle properly...they limit the practice of it. So this is what you get. It reminds me for some reason when I was in Wyoming a number of years ago. They eradicated many wolves...tourists don't wanna see a wolf gnawing on an elk on the side of the road. But then the elk got out of control and have just torn through vegetation at streams. This caused a problem for the fish, as the bugs they feed on need the vegetation...so now they are reintroducing the wolves. Maybe if they would have just let well enough alone. The4 NFL could learn from that. They sometimes cause more problems than they solve.
