Who do you think the steelers take in Rd 1 and how do you feel about it?

I'm going with Rock Ya-Sin and I'd be OK with it. What this defense needs is a playmaker, not another worker bee type guy and Rock could be a playmaker.

I have read and listened to so many things at this point that i have no idea where i read/heard it but the word is Tomlin loves Rock Ya-Sin

There are also several mocks that have him as the steelers pick. Peter King, Albert Breer and Daniel Jeremiah all have the steelers taking Rock. It seems that is based on what they feel is some reliable intel.

Here's why I see Rock Ya-Sin as the pick
1. Both Devins will likely be off the board

2. It seems Tomlin has a ton of input into the 1st round pick, as in, it's pretty much his decision. Colbert seems to have more input in the later picks.

3. Tomlin goes with his "gut" for just about any decision. He drafted Edmunds last year mainly because he was impressed with him when they had dinner. Reports are that they love Rock

4. With the Devins gone, the only picks that make sense are a DB or OLB. This is a weak CB class but it's deep in pass rushers.

5. Steelers haven't kept secrets very well. The media seems to get a pretty good read on who the steelers take in RD 1 under Tomlin.

How do i feel about it? As i mentioned above, I'd be OK with it. Not super excited but that's because I don't really love any of the guys who are likely in play at pick 20.

Here are the guys I think would be in play

Brian Burns - athletic and could be a great pass rusher but seems a but soft and doesn;t have that killer instinct

Clelin Ferrell - why did he disappear in games?

Rashan Gary - I would be OK with his as the pick. He's athletic enough to play OLB. He scored a 9 on his wonderlic but that doesn't bother me so much for a pass rusher.

Greedy Williams - i want a cover guy but a CB has to tackle at least a little bit.

Byron Murphy - seems like the safe pick. I'd bet he's a solid player but will he be a playmaker? I'm not sure. I'd be totally fine with taking Rock over Murphy

Darnell Savage - I'd be OK with this pick too. I'd actually prefer it to Rock. He's a playmaker and Safety has been a weakness since Polamalu left. He can be the deep third cover guy the steelers need.

WR - position is just too deep and the 2nd round guys like Parris Campbell or Deebo Samuel are just as good prospects as the guys being mocked in the 1st. You can get a good WR in Rd 4 this year.

TE - unless it's Hock, i can't see taking a TE in the 1st. Fant is just a big WR, can't block at all. Like WR, it's deep and you can get a guy later.

They should trade back for more picks.

Trading Back

I hate to be the guy saying they should trade back because you can't trade back just because you want to. You need a trade partner. Having said that, the steelers have the bad habit of running that card up to the podium.

Pick 20 could be a hot spot for team looking to trade up for a QB. It could also be a hot spot for the 1st RB to come off the board. The Raiders, Eagles and Cots supposedly love Josh Jacobs.

Anything can happen in this draft. I'm hoping for Bush just like I wanted Watt a couple years ago. If it's Rock and Tomlin likes him, that means he will suck in the NFL. I go Greedy if Bush is gone.

I don't view Rock as a BPA and I don't see how they can either. I at least saw what they saw in Edmunds.

But I am not sticking like glue to what one person said of who they like. They can like many of prospects, it isn't like that means they are number one on their boards.

Hopefully it is trade up, or Murphy,Baker.Butler,Deebo,Savage or Chase in 1.

Savage from a multi position perspective makes sense. Butler from a upside. And Murphy as a safe pick. If they like Baker I think he should be a safe pick as well.

I almost prefer a trade up in 2 over 1.But would be happy with either.

Remember peeps whoever is the pick we should try to like him.

As I will deal with it if it is someone I didn't want, just the way it is.

Once you put on that uniform I am rooting for you, unless you prove to be a asshat. Or incapable (year three -four).

It's a been a long time since we've moved up in the first.
I think we're in the perfect storm for that to happen this year.
IF we trade up, it will be for one of the Devins or Hockenson.
IF we trade up, it will be in the 8 - 10 sweet spot.
Detroit, Buffalo, Denver as potential dance partners.
We have the extra picks to burn, the draft is top heavy, and we just discovered that the timer on Ben ends in 3 years.
Time to make a splash!

I say it’s Byron Murphy. If it’s Rock ya-sin I would prefer to trade back.

This spells it out pretty good for me. WHOEVER it is, he will be a STEELERS player. This is partly why I don't get super involved as to who they should or should NOT pick as then I'm not disapointed if it isn't my guy. ONCE chosen, I go all ape-**** on investigating the draftee.

My choice would be..............................................................HOF play maker in the 1st

I think this is very wise. My money would be on Buffalo as a trade partner as Denver are mocked all over with ILB. The best players are in the 12-15 range. After that it's a bunc of 2-3 round guys through until 60-75.

My guess is that no matter who they pick, it will be almost universally panned by the members of this forum.

I hope it’s not Rock, I’m just not sold on him. I’m hoping for Ferrel.

This, if they can find a dance partner. A lot has been talked about the Steelers additional picks and how they could be used to trade up, but those picks could also be used to trade down. For example, trade down in the first round and pick up another second round pick in exchange for the 3b pick and end up with four picks in the top 66. Given where the value in this draft is believed to be, it makes a lot of sense.

Seems logical, and we actually would have already been in this spot had it not been for Antonio Clown nixing the trade.
I just hope the Bills aren't butthurt from that falling apart and are still willing to work something out.
They could use extra picks to bolster their lineup.

As far as I'm concerned, the die was cast for the remainder of Ben's/Tomlin's/Colbert's career when they traded AB for a handful of magic beans. Whether or not we could have gotten more for him is irrelevant. He should have been called into the principal's office, told in no uncertain terms that he was going to Buffalo or he was staying put. He could play or he could sit out three years, which would effectively end his career. That said, I fully expect the FA to run a pick to the table that will have everyone scratching their heads or screaming to high heaven. Something like picking the Rock with both Devins still on the board - or maybe Jarvis has a twin brother we can draft at 1.20. Some TVs will be harmed tonight.

if both Devins are gone, then I have a feeling we'll be choosing between Rock, Savage and Ferrell.

I'd prefer Ferrell since we have Durpee on a one-year agreement and nothing behind him.

I agree with you, but the Steelers think Chickalo is better than most on this board think he is.

If they are taking Ya-Sin I'm ok with it if the other guys are off the board and they move back to get him. I agree you have to find a partner for that. However, as said 20 is a flashpoint where someone from the bottom 10 wants to move up and grab a guy so there should be a partner. Then use the capital to move up near the top of the second. That said, despite my concern about height my preference would be to invest what they got for AB, and go up to get Devin Bush. A tangible value. A true war daddy like that would take the stink off that whole debacle.

If no Bush it will be Savage.

I think that if players like D White and D Bush are gone too early to make a realistic trade up to get one of them, then they better be thinking BPA at 20 which to me would be Brian Burns or TJ Hockenson if available. If both of those guys are also gone by the 20 pick it makes a lot of sense to trade down and get another mid 2nd round pick. The CB market has several guys that will still be available and none of them stand out clearly as a winner. The WR market would come into play in the 2nd with guys like Deebo Samuels and Hakeem Butler and edge guys like Chase Winovich would also be up for grabs, not to mention a good group of safeties like Jonathon Abram and Darnell Savage. DT Jeffery Simmons may fall due to the injury and could be an incredible value very late 1st round to mid 2nd round. He would have been a likely top 12 talent had he not suffered the injury that will delay his start to the career. I wouldn't say the Steelers are a player or two away from the Superbowl so I hope they use this draft wisely. Taking 10 picks with no movement up or down would be disappointing to me. Either go get the stud player you perceive will help you or combine some lower picks throughout the draft to get better position in rounds 2,3,4 of a draft that has some good depth at several positions.
