The Pittsburgh Steelers and Devin Bush are coming to a cross roads, and that cross road will happen on Saturday, May 2. That is the deadline for all NFL teams to either pick up the 5th year option on their 2019 draft picks, or don’t and allow them to become a free agent following the 2022 season.

The struggle has been real between the Steelers, and Bush. The Steelers traded up in the 2019 NFL draft to pick #10 to select the Michigan stand out. His ability to range from sideline to sideline, and be able to cover tight ends and running backs made the choice to move up too hard to pass for Pittsburgh. But it’s been and up and down career so far for Bush.

He’s also made some interesting posts on social media that brought him negative attention. Last summer Bush posted a video of a cat falling from multiple stories with this caption: “The only time I seen a cat not land on its feet omg!!
💀

The tweet has since been deleted, but it caught the attention of several folks around social media. Was it the worst thing he could’ve done? No. But it still wasn’t an appropriate video. When the Steelers arrived to training camp last summer, Bush was asked about his social media antics, but downplayed the severity and outrage.

“I don’t know if they’re real fans, to be honest with you,” Bush said. “I saw a lot of people that I don’t know. So, I don’t know.”

Then when asked whether anyone from the Steelers organization had reached out about his posts he responded that they couldn’t control his twitter account.

“It’s my Twitter, so they can’t control it.”

Since then Bush has unfollowed several hundred people, and now only follows 37 accounts. Most of those being Steelers related accounts.

Now his play on the field has been just as controversial as his tweets. As a rookie Bush was all over the field for the Steelers defense. He recorded 109 tackles, 2 interceptions, 9 tackles for a loss, 1 touchdown, 1 forced fumble, and received three votes for AFC defensive rookie of the year. It was a performance that had some rookie moments, but it was something that many Steelers fans were happy with. Then came his torn ACL in 2020. He was off to a solid start to the season before he blew his knee out against the Browns in a lopsided win, week 5.

From there it’s been a circus. Due to COVID-19 rules in 2020, Bush was forced to be away from the team. He said last year that he felt like he was on an island at times, and like he wasn’t apart of the team. But Bush pushed through the rough times and made it back in time to play in 2021. But he just wasn’t the same player.

He was timid, a lot of times avoiding contact all together. He didn’t fly all over the field. A lot of the time indecision would take him right out of the play. The knee by all rights seemed to be good to go, but mentally it didn’t seem like he was ready. He missed a few games with COVID-19, but started 14 games total. He only recorded 70 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 fumble recovery. Zero impact plays.

With Brian Flores’ Addition Will the Steelers Pick Up Devin Bush’s 5th Year Option?

The Steelers now have a secret weapon we hope with Brian Flores coming on board to help with the linebackers. Flores of course spent many years with Bill Belichick in New England helping with his defense. And had he not filed a lawsuit against the NFL he’d likely be a head coach right now. Pittsburgh also brought in veteran Myles Jack to play opposite of Bush. Jack should be an upgrade from Joe Schobert who was released following the season.

So far there have been 4 players who have had their 5th year options picked up. Buffalos Ed Oliver, Jets Quinnen Williams, 49ers Nick Bosa, and Noah Fant who was traded to Seattle. Fant of course was the player selected by the Denver Broncos with the Steelers original first round pick in 2019. NFL.com has a tracker that they’re keeping up to date.

Trade him bush for Q Williams change might be better for both… couldn't Hurt

We will see what an offseason removed from that injury does for him. Players in their final year tend to play harder. So maybe he will stop thinking of that injury and bring it.

I thought we overdrafted him but was always hopeful. It's a sore spot for me. I know the kid came into the league with some tools but I think the injuries have scared him. It sucks for him, the Steelers and Steeler Nation.

He was not a difference maker in college he is not a difference maker in the pros. Too small and horrible in coverage coupled with his lack of desire to take on blocks and running away from contact.**** him

Having Jordan Davis drop to #20 will make Bush instantly better.
Thats the key for undersized speedy guys like Bushy. You have to have guys like Davis in front of him so he can use his speed since he's not going to fight off these massive OL. Did you see his workout video that was posted? This guy is small! If he's 215-220 that's soaking wet and he'll never see 5'-11". More like 5'-9". Bush was overdrafted because Tomlin fell in love with his speed and sideline to sideline movement. You better hope Davis drops or we move up to get him in front of B'more.

He's not undersized or speedy any more.

I wasn't happy that the Steelers moved up to grab Bush. My son and I (Penn State fans) would mock him, laugh at him, during games. Kinda what we did watching him last year too. ******* b i t c h i g a n

I guess if he really returned to form they could tag him. If he is anything like last year honestly he is easily the worst draft pick in any recent memory. With the move up considered he would make UncleJarvis and Burns look like steals.

I mentioned on this sight once before, there was someone on this site who is a Michigan fan that stated all his tackles were 10 yards (something like that) down field and poor in pass coverage. He was not high on him at all. If it was apparent to someone who watches Michigan regularly (I assume) and Badcat, what tape were the Steelers' organization critiquing that convinced them to move up.

I was happy when they made the move by the way.

Tag Bush? Why would we want to make an undersized, underachieving LB one of the top 5 paid LBs in the NFL and pay him $18+ million? Even based on one really good season going into his 6th year.

I thought he had a good rookie year so that would make it 2. A longshot but if he turned it all around it would be an option for them.

I'm saying if you got a year that is to what you expected from him. One expensive year isn't terrible. Plus maybe you get leverage on a reasonable long term deal. No one was harder on him last year then me. But I don't take dumping a top ten pick you moved up for lightly.

I agree and it was pretty hard to **** on the year he got hurt. I wouldn't pay up but like I said let's not throw him on the heap just yet.

Finally, if he doesn't come out of camp like gang busters he is cut no question. I was working with young line backers and DBs on shedding block last night. Never go bar to bar with a guy. Fly to your leverage before he gets there. Which was pretty much exactly what Bush did not do last year.

I'm typically always up for grabbing or tagging bush, but certainly not in this case. Let's be done with this waste-of-space already.
Bob your bush comes with rumpleforeskin so that doesn't count.

Did "bug eyes" Tomlin make his eyes go crazy when he drafted those two gems as well? He made "bug eyes" when they drafted Kenny as well. So much for his draft acumen.

I dont know about that, but I'm sure he'd be amused if he knew you were obsessed with him.
