The biggest need for the Pittsburgh Steelers is as obvious as ever entering the 2022 NFL season as they are in dire need for a quarterback for the foreseeable future. Whether they prioritize a quick fix at the position or are looking for a long-term solution, their current options are not going to lead them to the postseason next January based on what we have seen.

The 2022 NFL draft seems to be the best bet currently, but that won’t likely be a quick solution unless they trade up for one of the more “Week 1 ready” starters. According to CBS writer Jason La Canfora, the Steelers are the most desperate for a quarterback above any other team in the league after Ben Roethlisberger‘s departure.

“Pittsburgh doesn’t give off the air of being in a QB pickle, and Mason Rudolph continues to be propped up, but this team can’t afford to waste the blue-chip talent it has on defense. The Steelers don’t have losing seasons under Mike Tomlin, and they reached the playoffs a year ago with poor quarterback play, but you aren’t winning in January in the AFC with the QBs they have right now. And I doubt either understudy proves to be the heir to Big Ben in the end. Add a legit QB who can push the ball downfield, upgrade the offensive line, and 2022 could be quite interesting while avoiding any long rebuild.”

So far it seems like everyone is in agreement that Rudolph is simply not the answer with what we’ve seen from him thus far while filling in for Roethlisberger. The Steelers don’t seem prepared to even mention Dwayne Haskins Jr. aside from committing to giving him a roster spot, but that leaves the notion that they do see potential at some point.

There have been plenty of names in the conversation for who will be Pittsburgh’s next starting quarterback with mentions of Jameis Winston, Jimmy Garoppolo, and just about any other free agent quarterback there is floating around. While the Steelers best option at quarterback would undoubtedly be Aaron Rodgers considering his long-lasting dilemma in Green Bay, but it’s not the most likely scenario.

Regardless of the speculation, the Steelers absolutely need a quarterback if they don’t want to squander the talent on both sides of the ball.

SN should have a contest predicting what QB not named Rudolph will be on the roster come training camp.
Prize can be a smug, I told you so, cuz SN running on a shoestring. Hint, hint.

The only people who seem to believe in Rudolph as the starter are the very optimistic Steelers fans. Rudolph hasn't received a full endorsement from the front office, coaching staff, teammates, or analyst.

Well it appears like every known quarterback known to man could be the Steelers qb next year. It's a great big smokescreen.

Maybe it’s the other way around or a little bit of both? I believe our best chance for the future is to roll with Rudolph and use the draft and FA to fill needs and address QB next year. We would have to give up too much draft capital or a lot of money for someone that will either be not much better or have no team around him to succeed. I also think in comparison to the guy he’s “replacing” that he doesn’t have a chance with fans and media. He will never be as good and the allure of someone else seems better. I’m definitely not defending the guy as the next one to lead us into the promised land but think that a lot of people are throwing hate towards his way and not warranted.

I'd rather spend on a guy like Trubisky, Mariota, or Winston. None are going to break the bank and all would be more entertaining to watch.
