Tomlin says there will be changes to staff. Outside OC as well.

You guy's on here crack me up! LOL! You piss and moan because Tomlin doesn't do this and doesn't do that. Like hiring from outside. Then when he comes out and says "we are going outside to hire an OC", you are still pissing and moaning!
Because most of us here, have been here longer than 5 minutes. In case you didn’t notice, all Tomlin does is TALK, continuously talks, but doesn’t actually change anything long term. Sure he makes changes when forced to, then reverts right back to his same ****.

The defense can be fixed even with Austin. He was limited by weakness up the middle. We really need to strengthen the MLB position and ad another stud DL.
There have been excuses for him since he took over, but since it is really Tomlin calling the shots, maybe it isn’t Austin

I found it interesting that he said he wanted an outside OC that had coordinator experience. Then you are getting a recycle. Go young and innovative.
Young and innovative, WITH EXPERIENCE

Ike, I was saying that too. They started throwing 3 + or - yards off the line of scrimmage, then ran on first down nearly EVERY single time. Damn straight I’m stacking the box……..

When allowed, MASON hit over the top, intermediate, and down the middle in the previous three games, why the hellA did they go back to Tomlin ball ?

Playoffs are bigger games and made for bigger gambles.

Salute the nation
The playoff game plan was almost EXACTLY the same as run under Canada, wonder whose plan it was all along.

They need more than an OC change. I'd like to see an upgrade at DC as well, one who can actually call the plays. The defense has done alright in the regular season in terms of points score, but five straight 30+ points allowed in the playoffs is unacceptable.
In the regular season you get various levels of offensive comptence. In the playoffs you almost always get the best offensive competence, especially when you are backing into the playoffs as a low seed Every time.
It is good to hear they're looking outside for an OC and that ARII and Khan will be involved in the hiring process. There should be a few more openings in addition to the OC, particularly at OL coach. You want your OC and OL coach to be on the same page since they basically act as the run game coordinator. It'd also be nice to see the Steelers find a young coach as passing game coordinator. Expand the staff with young coaching minds.

Curious that it hasn't been decided if Broderick Jones would play LT or RT moving forward.
Just because they aren’t committing publicly, doesn’t mean they haven’t decided.
A combination of Pickett/Rudolph as the starter feels like another season maxed out at 10 wins and a first-round playoff exit.
At least you then have you answer.

Too inexperienced at this point, only one year as QB coach. Better options out there with verifiable experience
so you're saying he's a shoe-in

This team needs a new DC for sure. Sadly, it won't happen. So even IF the offense improves they'll still get outscored. Need a replacement for Cam, healthy ILBs, Pat Pete gone, a good NT....and a better scheme than what Austin can bring.

Let's also have one that knows how to use the TEs in the passing game as more than window dressing. Maybe one who doesn't dial up Jet Sweeps as often. How about one whose route trees on 3 rd down require at least two receivers to move beyond the sticks?
And can understand how endzone tosses to big TEs and WRs like 88, 80 and 14 can reduce TO risk, like every other team ....

And attacking rookie replacements to stud corners who go out injured. And play action when the opponent puts 8 or more in the box, or deception plays, or not always running the same play from the one unique formation it is always run in, or exploiting weaknesses, or . . . .

In theory, yes. In practice, Austin has little to indicate that he is the man for this task, especially given his inability (or was it Tomlin?) to successfully recover from those ILB losses this season.

I am not sure what exactly more could have been done. Honestly we give coaches sometimes too much credit and too much blame for things. Short of miraculously making a new prototypical MLB out of thin air they seemed to do the best they could with the turd sandwich they were given. For once they addressed the position fairly well in the offseason but you can't predict the multitude of injuries all at one position yet again. I don't think Austin is anything special but I don't think he is terrible. If I don't get to replace both I m picking OC over DC right now. Some continuity isn't all bad. If they choose to replace him I am also fine with that I just wouldn't put money on it.

This offense and gaping middle on defense has been too predictable for years now. It’s time to revamp the entire scheme….
The gaping middle is likely more a product of failure to adequately address MLB and coupled with a huge injury rash. The league seems to undervalue the position.

I was hoping they went after Bill O'Brien as OC since he appears to be out with the Pats after BB left.
I don't know, the Pats offense was worse than ours for most of the year. The Pats are lacking skill players, but Mac Jones was terrible. Not sure if it was Obrien or BB, but i think i would pass on Obrien

I think scheme does not help with the middle. Our ends / DTs used to eat up blockers and let the LBs tackle. I don't think we have that any more. Plus our edge rushers don't hold the edge anymore. As great as TJ is he runs right by alot of things. He is a game wrecker when he gets to the QB, but when he can't he is almost a liability in the run game.

Out of curiosity why was it that they negotiated the” cake walk” type of training camps in the first place?
Not that I know the answer, but wasn’t it because of all the injuries that occurred in training camp in the past?
The Union which is predominantly players with less than 5 years experience saw the owners proposals regarding the $$ pie. Player team reps which are usually vested veterans with 8-10 years tried to advise all of these young players not just to look at the dollar signs, because the CBA as it was negotiated could possibly REDUCE their longevity in the league. Kevin Mawae before he retired really stressed that to all the young players. But as expected the young guys saw how much more money they would get from the new network/streaming agreement the League had made. As expected nowadays, the youth wants immediate satisfaction instead of long term security.

None of this would have occurred if Upshaw was still the NFLPA president. He always negotiated first for the veterans and the rookies and third year players second.

We’ve been getting burned up the middle by TE since Brady came into the league🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️ Obviously a huge problem that has existed for decades!!!
Tomlin has made it clear that his biggest goal is not giving up the splash. Watching them closely this year they play a lot of man with over top help. But the over top can be spread or two deep which means you have a LB nothing like Shazier running with a TE, rb or slot.

They scratched their *** to come up with 10 wins after two embarrassing loses. They have no franchise paid qb and are 15 million over the cap. Explain to me why they are extending Tomlin please.

The Holcomb/Alexander/Roberts was doing a fine job until losing Holcomb and Alexander for the season in consecutive weeks. Roberts a gamer against the run for sure, but he was playing with one arm for several weeks. Those last several weeks coaches only had 4th string and off the FA pile to work with. Had Minkah not been hurt, going to the Big 3 Safety look probably would have helped tremendously in covering TEs. The ILB room needs another Shazier type player and we really haven’t seen one like him (except maybe Parsons, Shaq Leonard, and Bobby Wagner) since Ryan got injured. I don’t even know if there is anyone available this draft with bonafide 3/4 ILB pedigree. But getting someone with that type of skill set would help in a long way. Especially with DL we have now.

Hold on there until we check other coaches around Tomlin's boy.
My choices, looking at who’s available, are
1. Don’t give Shades an extension, hire Gruden as OC with the understanding that he will be HC in 2025. Won’t happen, but that’s what I’d do.
2. Lefty.
3. The Duce Man.

I’m literally shocked that he admitted he’s going to look outside for an OC. Unless that’s an order that already came down from on high.
It’s a start, the question now is will Rooney insist on the best candidate available and mandate he have a good degree of autonomy on philosophy/play calling or will Tomlin be allowed to hire another unqualified person Tomlin has a personal relationship and can control to run the same conservative crap we’ve been seeing the last few years
