more likely, Tombert looks at Hood and lists his strengths and weaknesses...after this has been provided to them with a scouting report from the scouts. they then collaborate and assess a value on him. During this process, they ask DL if he has any qualm with a guy, and list the same positives and negatives. DL then looks at the same attributes and decides if he's on board with the guy...can he learn the 3-4? is he strong enough? can he hold at the point? DL's opinion is then added that into their assessment. I seriously doubt DL just ******* shows up at Latrobe not knowing wtf is going on.

Just because you are in charge, it doesn't make you smarter. You see it all the time, new young guy comes in thinking he knows it all, when he doesn't. Older guy who has seen & done it all, sometimes he lets the young guy take the lumps. Tomlin strikes me as someone who will be the first to let you know how much smarter than you he is. I believe that Tomlin does not really listen to or want anyone else's input. I watch all his press conf., that is where I get my take on him.

So it's exactly as you say OR he shows up not knowing ****? There isn't anything in between? Again, I'm not saying DL has no input but it is obvious just from the draft picks that Tomlin has had a huge influence on the draft. DL and Colbert along with Cowher drafted prototype 3-4 defensive players. The very first draft with Tomlin they draft Timmons to play ROLB. He was never projected to play that position. Then they draft Hood is a penetrating 4-3 DE. It appears that Tomlin wanted to change the defense. He is drafting smaller faster LBs and penetrating DL. I'm sure he told DL that's what he wants. So DL is going along with it because that's what the HC wants. Like I said I'm sure he has some input but this issue of drafting 4-3 type players is all on Tomlin. DL never had input with Cowher that swayed him to draft these types of players.

Like I said so were basing all this(that Tomlin is drafting 4-3 guys) on two players. One who worked out and one who didnt?

Tomlin gave the players off Monday, but 50 of them showed up for work anyway. Who do you credit for instilling this level of
motivation in this team?

Barak Obama and Mike Brown

No, he's also drafted Davis, Spence, Sylvester, and McBean that I can think of off the top of my head. As much as I like Shazier he is probably better suited for a WILL LB in a 4-3. Even Tuitt projected as a 5 tech or a DT in a 4-3. So it isn't just about 2 draft picks. And that doesn't even include Mclendon who is a penetrating DT in a 4-3 not a 3-4 NG.

well, thankfully, Cowher never made a complete cluster **** of a draft.
apples to tanks, as you'd say

I thought 5 tech was a 3-4 end(Tuitt)? How is Spence any different from Foote. Farrior from Timmons? McClendon bulked up to play the position. Its not like they kept him at the 280 he was first listed at and played him. Davis played 4-3 DE just like other coversion guys. Didnt pan out. He and Jason Gildon were similar. Davis was 6-3 250 Gildon 6-4 255. Problem was Davis sucked.. How was Sylvester any different then Jerry Olsavsky who was 6-1 221. Im not seeing this great influx of 4-3 guys being wrongly drafted for the 3-4. You take them and hope they can covert same as we've always done.

Just looked it up McBean was 6-5 305 thats a 3-4 ends body.

More to it than the listed height/weight.

I know that. If these guys didnt play in a 3-4 in college its a conversion. So your guessing if these guys can do it. Same as its always been.

They were drafted while Tombert went out for pizza.

I'd say 50 of them know that it's stupid to give Monday off in December before a critical game.

FREE BEER! Motivates the hardest of men.

Just might be the veterans on the team. I believe the team at this point is 53 guys plus the practice squad players and there are likely a few guys that are dinged up a bit. The comments were at least 50 guys with out a real count so it might be everyone came to work. That is a good sign. Just maybe these guys don't want to start the off season early, imagine that.

We're guessing, sure, but the FO is paid handsomely and given plenty of material to determine who can/can't. It's not supposed to be a 50/50 coin flip for Tombert.

Go **** yourself. Let's say everybody agrees with you then what? But it doesn't stop you from arguing your points. So knock it off. Stop posting.

Eww. Message board tough guy.

One of the points here is I agree with you. You anti-Tomlin guys have convinced me. While I don't think he is awful or responsible or all that ails the Steelers, I think he is very average and far from irreplaceable. But again, the question stands. If you convince everybody on here, where does that leave us? Do the Steelers make a change because you have been able to accomplish that? We all know that will have no bearing.

This is what makes it so mind-numbing. Overwhelmingly the threads are anti-Tomlin. To say any different you are either blind or stupid. Every different angle has been explored to state he sucks. I think guys just get so ******' tired of reading it. It is like, "Ok, we know he isn't the greatest, but give it a damn rest already. They won on Sunday. Enjoy it." He is defended only in the sense that peole get tired of the incessant pissing and moaning about him. Even though I would have no problems with them firing him, I almost feel this need to defend him against this avalanche. The guy gets blamed for a player fumbling for **** sake. It is absurd.

You obviously don't see that it cuts both ways. Tibs runs around saying how great he is (mostly in pictures because he isn't too bright) and others back him to the hilt. I guess them spouting their beliefs is okay but nobody can say they are wrong? Yea, that will make a great board. You say everything has been explored so why all the Tomlin love? Again they can post **** all over the board and that's great. But if someone says anything they don't like then they need to STFU right? Hell they are even trying to blame bad drafting on Dick LeBeau... **** me.

Sorry but that doesn't fly. You can decide not to read the threads or ignore certain people but telling people to shut up because you don't want to see it isn't going to happen.

You are full of ****. Maybe there are a handful of Tomlin supporters on here, but overwhelmingly, and I have to emphasize overwhelmingly, guys are either anti-Tomlin or like me, indifferent. That is just a fact. Part of the problem is you seem to be unable or unwilling to differentiate between somebody who is truly a Tomlin supporter and someone, who like I said, doesn't believe Tomlin should be held responsible for a player fumbling or missing a tackle.

Blaming the bad drafting on DL...LOL...he is part of the process of the draft so yes he is tied to it....now we all know how smart DL is.....so why do you think he hangs around coaching when he obviously sees Tombert drafting players that dont fit his scheme(for the last 8 or so years)...don't you think he has accomplished enough in life to just walk away? Or maybe he bought into some of these players but just couldnt make it work with them. In the end it is Tombert's draft but to think DL hasn't given his blessing on any of these players is crazy. I think most on this board believe Tomlin was told to keep DL. Why then would the Rooneys allow Tombert to draft players for the last 8 years that just wont work in Dicky boy's scheme ? And then DL still sticks around....Mind boggling.

I've had this same discussion with Vader many times. I've been reading this board for many years, and I've always found it to be quite negative. The board goes crazy after a loss but crickets after a win. I suppose some of that is just the nature of fan-dom: if any of your are familiar with Dejan Kovacevic, he writes about the Steelers and was commenting the other day that far more people click on negative columns (i.e. the secondary is atrocious) than positive ones (Le'veon Bell is terrific).

Anyway, back to the board - I've found that posters that are very "rah-rah" tend to get run off quickly or reform because guys like Vader jump all over them. He's like a paranoid dictator who sees enemies everywhere even though he's already hanged them all. I appreciate Vader's knowledge and perspective but man does it get boring and annoying to the same points driven into the ground over and over and over again. That's why I almost never read or post on this board during the season --- there's plenty of good, objective info elsewhere that doesn't come with the same, repetitive negativity "but Tombert should have drafted someone else!".
