Why is Matt Canada employed?

you need to throw at least 3 slants to DJ and to Chase as if catch in a soft spot thry can get a ton of yac or take it all the way.

17 positions since becoming a coach. 10 of those have been Offensive coordinator positions (9 of them in college). Longest a job has been held is 3 seasons (majority are single seasons as a OC. Any company in any line of work doing anything would look at a resume like this and not even call this candidate in for a interview. Yet we hire the guy into the pro league and then promote him a year later to OC. As much as I tried to give this guy a chance, the level of incompetence that is shown by even hiring this guy given his resume is shocking. This mans resume screams of ineptitude and the inability to be successful.

Listen, we all know the answer to this question, it's because Mediocre Mike never hires anyone that he perceives to be smarter than he is.

Go ahead, name one, not named Munch.
ICS will have a pic of Todd Haley's wife up in no time.

Think of all we heard last year about the offense.

Canada wants to do more under center but Ben wants shotgun…..Mitch almost exclusively in shotgun

Canada wants to throw over the middle but Ben just won’t do it for some unknown reason even though he did it for his whole career….Mitch nearly all throws outside

Canada is great at scheming up runs. We see plays where Gunner O is tasked with blocking people twice his size.

This...100% The proof is in the pudding

Interesting reading the chat on the PG just now. He said Tomlin said they intentionally didn't throw downfield (center or outside) because they didn't want to turn the ball over (living in their fears obviously). Let's hope they don't keep living in their fears.

Sure didn’t live in his fears trying to close out the game late in the 4th qtr

But up until that final 1:40 or so he sure did

Makes zero sense

See, this is the bull **** that I can't stand. Canada looks like a joke because Mike T can't keep his hands out of things. We speculated he was doing that on the defense, and it turned out to be true. It's no secret that I'm a fan of Canada's work and I've followed him for years. The dude is a genius and none of what his calls and play designs have made sense. I've seen the man orchestrate drives that are absolute brilliance. D coordinators making adjustments and Canada anticipated those adjustments and just exploits the D horribly. Now, it's runs up the middle and end arounds and limited route trees.

It's all bullshit. **** you Tomlin.

This is similar to when Ben was under center years ago the defense played as though they had a larger margin of error because Ben could just got into superman mode in the fourth quarter. Playing not to lose over the course of four quarters will not be successful over the long term.

I've been saying it forever now. You always play to win! You don't play not to lose.

This is one of the most valid criticisms of Tomlin. He doesn’t push the advantage. His strategy when ahead is probably two decades behind the times… and go back and look at all the times we played a team like the Ravens… we always play from minute one like tge game is going to be a close defensive struggle… even when they were decimated in the secondary and aggressive passing buried them… we played like it was a 3-3 fourth quarter game from the very start…

Thats why the aggressive 2 minute offense often would bury teams when we were struggling all game on O…

What exactly changed from last year's play calling to this years........................... not a lot.

I've said O'Canada should have been fired mid season last year, and unless he can show something soon he should be canned mid season this year as well.

I know that would never happen but just curious as to what some here think in the comparison of O'Canada VS Sherman as OCs, best / worse ?

This.

It's been disgusting to hear the blame fall on Trubisky the last couple of days. Trubisky missed some throws, but the offense is SO predictable and lacking in downfield passing!

Canada now has his mobile Qb but there was no effort made to take advantage of that along with the same predictable play calling as last year. Makes you wonder what they've been working on for the past 7 months

I saw him for 3 years at LSU and I've never seen any genius. A lot of ineptitude, but never any genius. He is awful.

This is truly the recipe for mediocrity. Yes it will keep you alive in the regular season as we have seen. It will allow you to win games and always have a chance during the regular season. The problem is this will not ever work for the post season. You will also never see your players grow much if at all if they are stuck playing vanilla offense. I really just do not understand this mindset. Tomlin can say all he wants about that was the plan for this week and it doesn't dictate what they will do next week, the problem is we have been seeing this for years. it also explains why the No huddle wasn't used more. Tomlin wants control and to play it safe and that has been his MO for a while now.

At that time, Tomlin stated the the "D" was called differently when BEN was playing and I took it for exactly what you are saying, SUPER MAN Mode.

is Tomlin covering for Canada or did Tomlin really handcuff the offense like that? Who cares, so long as they realize that they screwed up. The fact he felt the need to address this shows that they know if they have another game of dink and dunk and jet sweeps, the boos will rain down from their own fans.

No one should be supporting Canada. He sucked last year, period. He is the guy that completely removed the no-huddle/hurry-up offense to start the season. They had to start adding pieces back in because Ben was doing it on the field and bringing us back to win games. Without Ben last year, we are lucky to win 5 games. He brought us back in something like 7+ and his teammates said he was drawing plays up on the field. Canada should still be on the shortest of short leashes this year.

Cowher had balls,.................. Tomlin, not so much.

If this offense can't score / sustain drives / show vast improvement / become fluid / have more than 21 plays / then something needs to happen even if mid season. We have way to much talent to be abysmal. Part of the OL problems are play calling telegraphing / poor play call / nothing to enhance the players strength instead of weakness / you get the idea.

Matt O'Canada (tomlin) needs to either stand up to the HC and say this is enough so let me ****-ing call my game or face the fact he sucks. One way or the other, if this is O'Canada then shame on him OR if this is Coach Tomlin's hand involved then shame on him, either way something needs addressed but as usual nothing will happen and mediocre will remain our strength.

Let's just see how things transpire. That first game is just never a big indicator on the trend. Although Canada's last seasons body of work is uninspiring. Grab some popcorn and bite your fingernails. Sunday approaches quickly.
