With the NFL Scouting Combine going down this week, there has naturally been a lot of talk and coverage on the event. Pittsburgh Steelers’ defensive end and captain Cameron Heyward got a chance to join that coverage and sit down with NFL Network’s Andrew Siciliano to talk about this past season, the NFL Draft, and the future of the team.

Siciliano first asked Heyward if he knew quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was retiring. Heyward had the following to say:

“He hasn’t said it, but, you know. With things, the way they went, the way it was implied. We all kind of sensed that he was moving towards that. We wanted to give him the send off he deserved. Obviously we didn’t end up with the Super Bowl, but I felt like every game he was getting a standing ovation. Not only for the performance he had on the field but for what he has accomplished in the past.”

Siciliano went on to ask about what Heyward thought about the quarterback situation for the team, as they are heading into the first offseason in 18 years looking for a quarterback. Heyward responded with open mindedness. He said the team has so many avenues to look down. He cited the team having two guys who have shown they can play in this league in Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins. Heyward also said the team can go the free agent route, mentioning guys such as Jameis Winston, Jacoby Brissett, and Teddy Bridgewater as potential options, and then followed that by saying there’s guys you can trade for, but wasn’t going to dive to deep into that (hint hint, Aaron Rodgers).

Heyward also talked about some of the rookies coming up. He mentioned that he trusts Kevin Colbert and the job he’s done, but has a unique challenge in front of him, since the last time he picked the team’s potential starter-to-be was in the form of a rookie Roethlisberger. He had this to say about Colbert and the rookies coming in:

“Kevin has done a great job of bringing in guys. But we’ll see what he’s done at quarterback. Last time he picked was Ben Roethlisberger, so you can go in the draft. You’ve got some really cool guys like Malik Willis, Kenny Pickett, Desmond Ridder. You can go down the list there are some really quality quarterbacks.”

Heyward seems very open to whatever the team does. He seems confident no matter what the situation. When asked if he’d rather a veteran quarterback to win right now his answer was simple:

“Who’s to say a rookie quarterback can’t win?”

He said it would rely heavily on the defense and the weapons the offense has in place to do it’s job. He stated he feels very confident in the pieces they have to win right now:

“Not many teams have a Najee Harris running the ball. Or a Claypool, or a Diontae Johnson…on defense we have a monster…you got the Defensive Player of the Year, you got Minkah Fitzpatrick, you have myself, Stephon Tuitt, Tyson Alualu. Combine that altogether that is a winning success. You just need a quarterback that can play.”

Siciliano mentioned coach Mike Tomlin’s potential desire for a more mobile quarterback and what he thought. Heyward agreed, saying this is now a trend the league is heading in, and being mobile in the quarterback position is essentially a pre-requisite coming in. He says it opens up the field so much, especially since the RPO has become such a big part of offenses today.

In closing Heyward was asked about Draft prospect Malik Willis. He mentioned he didn’t know Willis, but his brother and fellow prospect Connor Heyward had a relationship with him, and kept an eye on him. He mentioned that he heard how exciting he was, and the fact he stayed extremely relevant and talked about after transferring from Auburn to Libery was impressive. He said he’s excited to see what happens next for the young quarterback.

It seems Heyward is enjoying the off-season and watching his younger brother go through the draft process. However, his confidence in this team has not waivered, and the burden of being the true leader of this unit is surely not lost on him. We will see what direction the team goes in regarding the quarterback position. Like Heyward, we all have to wait and see. Luckily he’s ready to help guide whoever’s next, and show them the Steeler way.
