Went to a game against the Browns years ago with my Dad. He footed the flight and we had tickets from some relations who have season tickets and lent us theirs.
Tailgated with the crew, met Dom and BAS and several others. The Browns were actually winning the game throughout. Couldn't hear a darn thing because it was so loud up where we were. I had a radio with earbuds turned up all the way and still couldn't hear Bill and Tunch.
The Browns weren't that great, but Ben was young and Cribbs was KILLING the Steelers. At the end though, Ben put together a drive and the Steelers ended up winning late. Great game, super finish, wonderful way to spend the day.
But it got even better. As many of you know I'm from Butte, MT a major Irish town built on mining. Lots of Irish immigrants came here to work in the early 1800s and stayed on. Anyway, the museum was opening a sports history section and dedicatign it that weekend, so Dad and I went there to check it out. As a funny side story, the girl at the ticket counter said that Seniors get a discount so "My grandfather could get in for half price." My Dad ironically didn't quite hear her so he said "What did you say?" And I repeated very loudly, "She says you get in for half price GRANDPA!" He looked over at me and said, "You *******."
Anyway, we went in and were looking around and who do we see, but Dan Rooney talking with some executives from the Museum. I didn't want to bother him. I mean that was Dan ******* Rooney. But my Dad (who I'd just embarrassed, by the way) said, "How often are you going to get the chance to meet the owner of the Steelers?"
So he walks us over there, waits patiently until Mr. Rooney notices us and then says "Hello Mr. Rooney, my Son and I are huge fans and we came over from Montana to see the game and we just wanted to meet you."
Dan Rooney looked us over and shook our hands and asked where we were from in Montana. Dad said Hamilton and I said Butte, Dan said, "Good Irish Town, Butte. Been there several times. I'm glad you guys could make it out to the game. Thanks for supporting the team." All this done while looking us in the eye and after taking a break from the people he had been talking to and shaking our hands. Very kind of him.
We finished the trip with a Primanti Bros sandwich, and yes I put an egg on it - and a Roethlisburger from Zeppi's. (Which I rather liked, by the way.)
It was a great trip and something I'll remember for the rest of my life. The thing is I owe my Dad a trip and he's getting older. I'd better get it done sooner than later.
