I'm not going to get into the game from last night too much. Although there were obvious misses on PI calls and others by the refs. GP and Patterson both had 1 or more (GP) PI's not called on their defenders. Or why Tomlin burned a TO we would obviously need at the end of the game with the clock stopped and 55 seconds on the clock. We absolutely needed that TO.

My issue is about things that have been going on/observed.

1. Why do we always have terrible play calls and results with 1 yard or so to go? We have to be the worst team in the NFL trying to gain a darn single yard or less. We almost always lose yardage. WHY?!?!?!

2. On runs and short yardage plays, our guys are getting hit yards into the backfield. Our D, who is supposed to be good this year, rarely does that. A team needing a yard or two on 3rd or 4th down seems to get it easily most of the time against what we are led to believe is a good defense. Yet, our O almost never seems to make that 3rd or 4th in short. It is disturbing to watch year in and year out. The Clowns were 5 for 5 on 4th downs last night.

3. Why can't we run and gain yardage, especially on 1st downs? Teams know we are going to run and stack the box and/or have a run blitz. We get stuffed behind the line all the time. 1st down on our first possession was an obvious one last night. Why? Again from above, I don't see the Steelers doing the same to other teams. They are still just rushing 4 guys.

Am I off my rocker or are others noticing this as well? It's not just this year. It's been years of this.

P.S. Enough of any Watt for DPOY this year. The dude had a few good games and has been mostly non-existant since. I know he gets double and triple teams with chips thrown in there. But, he is a generational player and has been invisible for most, if not all, of games this year. The Steelers had no plan for Garrett last night. They let Moore try to handle him one on one and he got 3 sacks and a FF in the first half. Watt had nothing. Garrett was finally doubled or chipped in the 2nd half to help out Moore. Dumb, dumb, dumb!

They struggle scoring touchdowns. Tomlin tried to win 19-18 last night like 18-16 most weeks. Harris is a plodder. Teams can neutralize Watt more readily and Steelers struggle to adjust or come up with creative blitzes. Tomlin is irreparably lost in the last 2 minutes of halves.

It's just time for something new even if the regular season record has to dip a little bit to reset.

Tomlin is not as good of a coach as media tells us he is.

.500 football is not the goal. At some point a division title and playoff wins has to be the standard again.

And it won’t happen with Capt word salad as coach.

Disagree if you want but this is the same **** every year with that bozo

You're out of luck because, according to Tomlick yesteday, "there's nothng more we can do schematically."

Get this clown era over with. Insanity to think Tomlick can adapt.

When it's 3rd & 1 or 4th & 1 I feel like the Steelers have no chance yet when the opponent has 3rd & 1 or 4th & 1 it's a given they will convert.

Our supposed great defense with all those high paid players rarely, if ever, has a goal line stand. They rarely, if ever, blow up a 4th & 1 for a loss.

Last night was the best example of this. Browns converted every time. Steelers didn't.

They have 2 rookies in the middle of the OL that last year were about done with their season. I think that is having some impact. I think those guys will be very good, but they are still rookies. I think that is a factor in short yardage struggles. They were disjointed on those attempts last night it seems. That goes directly to the coaches...it seemed like they were trying to decide what to do instead of having something ready to go. Harris is a problem. Why not sell out to stop the short run, hell, if he busts out he isn't exactly speedy. It'll be a chunk, but he probably isn't gonna go 50 to the end zone on you.

As per the defense, they do have to figure out something different. Teams are gonna do this to Watt, or outright hold him, cause it works. And the secondary just doesn't hold up consistently if they don't get pressure. So now what? It's out there, everyone is going to play the Steelers the same until they show they can fix those issues.

That's exactly what I was saying or trying to say. Last night, it was a given the Clowns would convert on 4th down. For us, we rarely do because we can't get a darn yard or heaven forbid, 2 yards on 3rd or 4th down. Our DL is terrible in those situations and is the biggest reason we need a giant NT to plug in the middle. The OL is on the way to being fixed, we can hope but I am not holding my breath until I see it happening. New RB's may or may not help. It just doesn't matter who is running the rock if they are getting blown up 3 or 4 yards behind the line. That's 100% on predictable play calling and the OL.

They must pick a DL in the 1st round this year. They have been kicking this can down the road for years now. This again is there No. 1 priority. We can't keep using a band of misfits (outside of Cam). Ogunjobi is good in spurts but can't play an entire game and isn't effective for an entire game. Benton is coming along in his 2nd year but that's it. We're still subbing in 3rd and 4th string guys along with PS guys. That won't cut it in the NFL.

It has been the same exact story for YEARS. If a team is willing to have patience and go dink/dunk, you can march up and down the field on the Steelers all day long. If we don't get pressure on the QB, our DB's get exposed week in and week out. Playing their soft zone coverage 10 yards off the LOS on 3rd and short...total insanity. It is wash, rinse, and repeat every year.

We basically play a 2 DL base defense 80% of the time. We spread TJ and Highsmith out so wide that they are basically OLB, then wonder why 2 guys cannot get separation from 4-5 OL. It is the definition of insanity. We have run that defense on the damn goal line before. Ray Charles could find a hole to run through against that front.

For the most part though teams don't have that patience or ability. Which is why the Steelers keep doing it.

Harris is incapable of short yardage because he needs a wide open lane and time to get a full head of steam before strength and momentum kick in. Once he gets up to speed he is tough to tackle. He doesn't run with any explosiveness or burst, no power in the short yardage.
TJ is the best guy on the field but he cannot bat 1000%. The guys around him look very suspect when TJ isn't hitting homeruns.
Broderick Jones makes Dan Moore look like an all pro, but he's not. Very average with no chance against a guy like Garrett.

If you are tasked at trying to solve the problem, and you refuse to acknowledge that you are the constant, then your boss needs to solve the problem.

In the case of the Steelers:
- Owner, completely fine with the money coming in, will make no changes
- GM, directed by the Owner to not do anything to upset the gravy train
- HC, slightly above average coach, media loves him, Owner is loyal to a fault, so no need to change. Keep trying the same thing hoping it eventually works
- OC, saddled with a failing playbook, told to make it work, do not deviate from HC’s directive, hope other teams make enough mistakes that failing playbook succeeds.
- DC, saddled with a failing playbook, told to make it work, do not deviate from HC’s directive, hope other teams make enough mistakes that failing playbook succeeds.
- QB, directed to make absolutely ZERO mistakes, while running the plays you know will not work, make no changes to called plays at the line.

This is textbook definition of insanity, and sets you up to fail.

Thanks for solidifying my case.

This movie has been playing for a long time, on continuous feeds.

So we have a true 3/4 NT on the PS... but Tomlin hates those...D stands on 4th and short are better with those kind of center pluggers ... as for 4th and 1 on O, Drive block across the ol.. with a ******* FB... dont pitch it.. let a rb hit the line hard

This has been our defense since Cowher. Lame.

That's how the Pats****** beat us all the time but that was their game anyway. A few teams learned to copy that but not everyone wanted to play that game.
What the Pats****** offense did best is what LeBeau's defense did worst.

I don't even mind that. I mind that we did it for every cheats game. EVERY.SINGLE.ONE.

Hey Tomlin, adjust to beat your opponent, dude. Otherwise, your below par.

You decide.

Issue with Tomlin is he put up 3 stinkers to losing teams this season like he's always done, which once again will likely cost us a first round bye and homefield. Bills and Chiefs both have cupcake schedules with maybe 1 or 2 tough games remaining. Meanwhile we have to play in Philly, Baltimore, and as we've seen, the game in Cincy won't be an easy one. We should be 10-1 at least with a game or 2 lead controlling our own homefield destiny, instead we're looking at a potential 1 and out in the playoffs. Until Tomlin gets the issue of playing down to losing teams fixed and puts us in better seeding positions come playoff time, he won't be an elite coach, regardless of how much the sports media wants to crown him a hall of famer.

The first-round bye was a huge stretch as the No. 1 seed in the AFC. This loss is just a huge setback at winning the division. The Steelers and Ravens have a relatively comparable schedule down the stretch, with the Steelers being slightly tougher.

Baltimore:
at Chargers
Eagles
BYE
at Giants
Steelers
at Texans
Two straight tough games for Baltimore, would be great to see them drop both.

Pittsburgh
at Bengals
Browns
at Eagles
at Ravens
Chiefs
Bengals
The next two are huge as losing 3 straight is a very strong possibility.

He'll never be that

while I agree with several of the OP’s assessments I’ve gotta just set a contrarian view out there too cuz that’s what makes the boards great

Weren’t the Stains 0 for on 3rd down conversions til late in the game and finished 1-10 so add in the 4-4 on fourth and that gets 5-14 or 35.7% conversion rate

On the flip side the Steelers went 7-16 on 3rd and 1-3 on 4th for 8-19 or 42.1%

Maybe our D is forcing teams into a consistent plan of four down territory because they excel on 1st-3rd down defense? Maybe the D is better than being given credit for by the OP.

Going into the game we had a top 5 record in the league and a top 5 point differential as well, maybe we aren’t so bad? Maybe

Maybe it just sucks to watch a **** game plan unfold vs a rival we should beat. But c’mon most of this saw this coming as the Stains have played us well at home recently, we suck in Thursday night and this was their SB. The trap was set and we just fell in the pit that’s why the sky looks like it’s falling….maybe

I used to never think this way,but i fully expect the Steelers to lose when they play bad teams or low win count teams.

How did I get here?

If you repeat a trend over and over it defines you.

It is absolutely deflating as a fan to see the same things repeat themselves over and over again.

This script sucks.

I know we already know this, but I saw on CBS the Steelers have 3 losses vs. teams with 2 or fewer wins in week 12 or later the past two seasons. The rest of the NFL only has one.

Last year, weren't they the first team in history to lose two such games in the same season?

Luckily, every other team remaining on this year's schedule has at least 3 wins already.
