Backup QB battle could be brewing
between Steelers' Gradkowski, Jones

The Steelers brought in free agent Bruce Gradkowski and drafted Landry Jones in the fourth round last year to provide depth at quarterback for when Ben Roethlisberger inevitably would get injured.

It never happened.

Roethlisberger played all 1,067 offensive snaps for the first time in his 10-year career, and the Steelers' backup strategy never was put to the test.

The closest thing Roethlisberger came to missing a practice was when he was limited on a Wednesday leading up to the Week 9 game in New England. He was on the injury report only once when he was probable with a sore right finger before the Week 5 Jets game.

“Compliments to Ben. Last year, he worked hard to keep his body right and to stay in shape,” Gradkowski said.

But the odds Roethlisberger stays healthy for a second consecutive year aren't good.

Although Roethlisberger has missed only 12 starts over his career because of injury, he's missed snaps in 24 others during the past decade.

“You never know what is going to happen in this game,” Jones said. “Ben was healthy last year. This year, he might be healthy again. You just have to be ready.”

That's where Gradkowski and Jones come in, and “getting ready” happens now for the two.

Spring is a valuable time for backup quarterbacks as the just-wrapped-up offseason practices and upcoming minicamp, training camp and preseason are the only times Gradkowski and Jones get enough reps to get better.

“As a backup, all you can do is keep preparing and keep working and try to get better and not get complacent,” Gradkowski said. “Just because Ben played every game last year — and you want him to play every game — I have to continue to prepare like I am playing every game.”

Being a career backup, Gradkowski is used to that.

The Seton-La Salle and Toledo graduate has taken only 31 snaps and thrown 11 passes over the past 29 months and none last year. The 30-year-old has 19 career starts in eight seasons but none over the past three.

Even though he has a big advantage over Jones, Gradkowski could get competition during training camp.

Jones didn't dress for a game as a rookie, but he has the pedigree to be successful. Jones is the third-leading passer in FBS history at Oklahoma with 16,646 yards 123 touchdowns in a shotgun-based, quick-throw offense.

Charged with learning a new offense, new formations and having accuracy issues last year, Jones struggled.

“It's just a lot,” Jones said. “It's totally different. Speed is different. Defenses are different. It is just a lot thrown at you. This year, I am comfortable and just can react and throw it.”

Roethlisberger has noticed a difference in Jones.

“He seems more comfortable back there just making the reads and making the calls,” Roethlisberger said. “Even just his command in the huddle is so much better and more confident that he was just a year ago.”

Jones has taken his share of snaps during offseason practices with the second team that not only indicate he's getting better, but also that there could be a battle for the backup job at training camp.

“I expect us to compete, and I expect Landry to make great plays because that's what he is capable of doing,” Gradkowski said.

Jones downplayed a possible training camp showdown.

“I don't know. There's always a competition with those things, but I don't want to get into that. I will just let the coaches handle that,” Jones said. “Everybody wants to play on the first team, and everybody wants to start. For me right now, I don't know if that is realistic, so I have to take my opportunities when they come.”

We can only hope, otherwise it was a waste of a valuable draft pick. Year two is supposed to be the yardstick.

I think Landry Jones was a smart pickup. a project QB who has produced but is still raw, taken way before we need him so there's no pressure for him to start. A few years learning and he could be an excellent backup and spot starter, trade bait, or even a transitional guy from Roethlisberger.

the guy needs a couple more years and that's ok, he has to keep learning and improving his game

I was up and down about the pick, thought we had more pressing needs at the time.

But if he develops and a training camp battle for no. 2 surfaces?

Depth isn't a horrible thing to have................

can he become good enough to take the reins from Ben down the road? That would be a very well spent pick, of course that the risk of busting is huge.
I also wanted them getting a more inmediate kind of player but now he's a Steeler, let's hope he develops

The question is did they take him to take over for Ben. Or was he taken to be a quality young backup for Ben when he gets hurt. I think the team got tired of Batch and Leftwich.. Ben wants to play 6 more years. In two years Landry should know the O inside out while still being young guy. Then we will have a quality young back up instead of brittle old vets.

I would hope he is getting better, if not, then totally a wasted pick. I'm saying as time goes, he'd best be improving all along. Not down on the guy, but am expecting improvement all the time, as said, complacent will get him canned.

Salute the nation

This is a big year for Landy IMO. He has a year in the offense, a year of practice, year of film room, so how he has progressed will be huge. If he hasn't much you have to cut him and not waste the roster spot if he has progressed great let him compete with Bruce for the #2 spot.

If we cut him do we bring in a 3rd string QB or just go with 2 QBs? If he shows much improvement I still dont see us cutting Grad. yet so we will more than likely keep 3 qbs anyways. I still think he has some potential and see no harm in keeping him on the team.

I really dont see the rush to cut him. Let him learn. Not like he is making much.

We should be fine with Ben and Bruce so if Landry hasn't improved why keep him? If he has and Bruce and Landry are neck and neck and Bruce wins I still leep Landy because he showed improvement. If he hasn't why redshirt him again to never dress if there's no sign of improvement?

I hope he gets better and can at least develop into a viable backup quarterback.

I thought this thread was going to have an Art Schlicter angle when I saw the title.

Whew!

Seems like big shoes to expect a 4th round QB to fill. I think a capable back-up is the best that can be hoped for. How many of the current starting QB's were drafted outside of the top 2-3 rounds and how many of them are someone you would want as a full-time starter for your team. Outside of Brady, I can't think of any.

Romo was undrafted. Ryan Fitzpatrick and Matt Cassel were 7th round picks. Not sure if either are starting now or not. Lots of 2nd and 3rd round QBs starting.

I thought the pick was a good one at the time because of his pedigree, college record in a big program, and size. On paper he's got the tools and experience. We saw a glimpse in that one half he looked like an NFL QB last summer. But he isn't Ben, who you could count on to manage a game as a rookie. I do expect him to look like he could this summer. And that would be reasonable progress going into his sophomore year.

If he's developed as I believe Haley's staff can do, I think he'll be a suitable replacement when Ben rides into the sunset. And I think that's what they have in mind.

Didn't realize Romo was undrafted. I wouldn't mind Fitzpatrick as a back-up, but not as full-time starter, I don't think. Matt would be OK.

Most of what I saw was a bunch of 2nd and 3rd rounders. I just did a quick perusal, though and the list I was looking at was starters at that point in time, i.e. was not the normal starter if they were injured.

Yup. Lots of talent in the 3rd round.

Lol I can see Archer being brought up in EVERY thread going forward.

It would be nice if Landry develops enough to be Ben's replacement. I would hope we did not take him only to be a back up player.
