Penguins Offseason, free agency, moves around the league, all in one thread!

They can never buy him out or trade him

Pierre LeBrun ✔ @PierreVLeBrun
So $70 million worth of signing bonuses in Price's $84 million contract. Wow.

holy ****! You'd think he was the top goalie in the league with those numbers...

I think Jarry starts the season for WBS despite a strong preseason showing. I say come Jan/Feb Jarry becomes back up to Murray and has a strong spring and a deep playoff run

I'm not against that plan. It will give Jarry way more ice time. Perhaps they just keep him in WBS until Murray/Niemi gets hurt.

I still think Jarry is far superior to Niemi. Niemi is starting to decline. Jarry is quicker, faster, and has way more upside.

so maybe we can sweet talk Markov or Radulov?

Habs can't sign them both after paying Price

I'd take either one

Niemi is no MAF, but he will fine fine with playing 20-25 games a year. The D needs tightend up when he plays like they did with Fleury. They seemed to play a different game, a more defensive style.

Mike Fisher is not a bad option for a 3rd or 4th line center. He would add experience and held the "C", so he has leadership. He may have a year or two left in those legs.

Carrie Underwood would be run out of Nashville if she became a Pens fan - not going to happen - he 'll probably retire

we give them Bonino and they give us country pop music. She would hate Pittsburgh. Not hip enough for her lifestyle.

After celebrating a Stanley Cup championship for a second consecutive season, general manager Jim Rutherford told the Penguins' pending free agents to test the market and report back if they want to return.

There's not much room at the inn and it turns out that the Penguins will look very different as they try for a three-peat next season. As free agency opened Saturday, Pittsburgh signed defenseman Matt Hunwick and goaltender Antti Niemi but lost winger Chris Kunitz, center Nick Bonino and defensemen Trevor Daley and Ron Hainsey.

Arguably the Penguins most important move came late in the day when they re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Justin Schultz to a $16.5 million, three-year deal with an annual cap hit of $5.5 million. Rutherford said locking up Schultz was a priority.

Rutherford said the Penguins, who still need to sign restricted free agent defenseman Brian Dumoulin and forwards Conor Sheary and Josh Archibald, aren't in a salary-cap crunch this offseason.

"This is probably the best shape we've been in in a few years at this point in time," Rutherford said, "so we'll be able to add another player and still end up under the cap, which would be a good place for us to be going into the season with that flexibility going forward."

uh-oh Mark Madden knows Pens hockey

Mark Madden @MarkMaddenX
I'm told Pens see Hunwick as a left-sided D partnered w/either Letang or Schultz. This would seem 2 make Maatta available.

I've heard that Colorado wants Maatta, Sprong and a 1st for Duchene. I hope JR tells them to get bent. Maybe Maatta and a 1st, but stay away from Sprong. If Maatta is truly available, bring in a legit 3rd center for him. We have wings, we need centers to fill the bottom two lines. Cullen could be asked back for one more year. I still think Fischer could be had at a less cost than trading a young guy.

**** Colorado, I heard Duchene is old and slow

NO, we're not giving up Sprong, another half year in the minors and he'll be the next Jake Guentzel - I predict!

Sprong is special. They need to keep him. He'll be a staple in this offense for awhile.

We don't need Duchene. He's too expensive anyway.

Pens fans make Duchene sound like he's the greatest hockey player outside of the Penguins organization. I think they can find another option.

SOB!

There's goes another one of my picks

Dallas inks Alexander Radulov to 5-year deal

Alexander Radulov has signed a five-year, $31.25 million contract with the Dallas Stars.

That works out to a $6.25 million annual cap hit for Radulov. He had 18 goals and 54 points in 76 games with Montreal in his return to the NHL last season, but he has the potential to do better going forward.

**** it - maybe we should go after Jagr

Andrew Berkshire ✔ @AndrewBerkshire
Radulov at 5v5 last year: 8 goals and 23 assists in 1113 minutes.
Jagr at 5v5 last year: 8 goals and 25 assists in 1129 minutes.

Wouldn't that close the circle on the 3 peat

I think so too. The depth in Wilkes-Barre is nhl ready imo.
Rutherford isn't making the sexy signings. But I think he's making the necessary signings.

Pens will contend. Still a ton of talent

I do like Mackinnon from the Aves. Works out with Sid, and is fast. I see no possible way the Aves let him go.
Just letting out my thoughts

No Fisher.
Sprong should not be in any movement talks what so ever.
Maatta, I'm ok with him on the team, but if a team is interested and willing to offer something useful. Then go ahead

No sniffs on Cullen yet

Matt Cullen - C - Penguins

The Carolina Hurricanes haven't had any conversations with free agent Matt Cullen as of Monday.

The idea of bringing Cullen back was floated around because of the Hurricanes' signing of Justin Williams. Like Williams, Cullen was a big member of Carolina's Stanley Cup-winning team in 2015-16 so a reunion might be a nice sentiment. Although Cullen will turn 41 in November, he's also coming off two solid campaigns with the Penguins, so he does still have some value. It seems right now the Hurricanes aren't pursuing Cullen though.

Matt Duchene - C - Avalanche

The Carolina Hurricanes might not be willing to pay the price necessary to acquire Matt Duchene.

"When I get on the phone with GMs around the league, they’re asking for a top young defenseman," Hurricanes GM Ron Francis said. "They’re very hard to get and very hard to find. We have them, and we’re not going to give them up, especially for a player who has two years left and then he can walk away."

I don't think the Penguins lost a lot in terms of talent. There were more than a few moments during the season when people wanted Kunitz and Cullen out of the lineup. Daley's injuries have held him back some and Hainsey was in over his head in ice time during the playoffs. They're all on the downside of their careers and another long season with old legs could be problematic. Bonino was a tough loss because he still has a lot of good hockey left in him and is the type of player you like to have around in the playoffs. What I'm concerned about is the locker room chemistry. The team lost a ton of character this offseason and that can't always be replicated when assembling a roster.

that's why I would see if Cullen wants to come back one more year and see if a guy like Fischer with experience and the "C" would center the 3rd line. Right now, without trading the future, who is out there and in their price range?

This year's free agent crop was weak to begin with and there really isn't much out there. For the right players, I am completely fine with trading away draft picks and prospects for NHL ready talent. Wish the Pirates would have done the same when they were in championship contention.

the Pirates are a freakin' mess. They have two teams in this city constantly competing for championships, making moves to get better and they sit on their hands. This year, more than any year, all they have to be is .500 and they just have lost their 4th in a row to two bottom dwellers. I have little interest in watching them.

As far as the Pens, I don't know if I want to mortgage the future more than they need to. They have to so something, so it will be interesting who they go after. I'm sure the mad scientist is working his magic as we speak.

Damn, Vegas traded newly acquired Marcus Kruger to the Canes for 5th round pick from the 2018 NHL Draft. Seems rather inexpensive for a 3rd line center with 2 Cups. Now, the Canes are over the cap. They will have to release or trade someone soon.

We should still be on the hunt for that 3rd line center - Still think we need a better than Rowney on the 4th line too

Pens should completely mortgage the future.
They have an aging Sid, with some potential concussion problems, and still 2 Cups in last 2 years. 3 Cups in his career, so the Pens and Sid/Geno get in line with the greatest all time teams if they win 1 or 2 more cups.
Leafs of the 40s, 60s
Habs of the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s
Redwings of the 50s, 90s
Islanders of the 80s
Oilers of the 80s
Blackhawks of the 10s

I don't even think the locker room chemistry will be affected. The Pens have always had an easy going, tight knit atmosphere.
Losing MAF in that area sucks. But they'll be ok.

Losing Bonino's clutch playmaking and Cullen's face off wins is what concerns me. But as far as talent in terms of skating. Not worried at all
