Darius heyward Bey had a big catch according to twitter... I mean according to news sources.. (link unavailable).

Maybe we should think about moving him up the depth chart. Your thoughts?

Moye is doing good things too. Maybe this year we carry 6 WR

Not steelers related but Blake Bortles looks pretty good. Oh yeah Ziggy Hood had a sack tonite.

Heyward-Bey had a really nice practice. Showed his deep speed against the Bills and had no signs of those bad hands that he is known for, however, it was just a practice. Not sure they keep six.

Eh, seems to be the clear No. 7, or eighth if you count Archer.

It was either tape or Vader, neither of which are fans of the ziggy pick, said that they expected ziggy to be better in a different system. Not that one sack in a preseason game proves that, but will be interesting to watch.

Sometimes the player just doesnt fit the scheme. I think that was the case with Ziggy. He is a penatrator. We were asking him to do the opposite of what came naturally to him.

I agree, he wasn't doing what is strength was. Some said a 4man front is what he needs to be in, obviously our three man front is meant for totally different responsibilities. He isn't a Steeler anymore, so I'm not following him.

On a totally different note, does an yone know / think Max Starks will stick on roster in AZ?

No. 10 characters.

Maybe kordell was a penetrator too....

I was at practice today and I will tell you who impressed me the most at WR (besides Antonio Brown). Markus Wheaton.... His route looked sharp against the Bill's DB's and left several of them in the dust. He caught just about everything while I was watching him, some of them were pretty difficult catches. Looking forward to seeing how that transitions to Sunday's.

Speaking of AB, there was a big pushing and shoving match with about 30 Bills and Steelers either getting involved or looking like they were ready to get involved and Antonio along with a Bill's player seemed to be at the center of it. They were going at it pretty good. Coaches finally intervened and got everyone settled down. He looked awesome in all the drills and during the whole practice. The poor Bills DB's looked hapless trying to cover him.

Heywood- Bey is a very good special teams player and gunner. I think he may just stick as a result.

Bey will stick around since all we care about now is having the fastest guys on the field ---->I will now duck and cover

I'm sure there was some sarcasm here, but contrair to what you say, They are looking for the RIGHT combination of speed / agility / catchability. The mold id AB, now they looking to s-t-r-e-t-c-h him, height wise.

Great thread! I'm glad to hear that DHB is doing something positive...he actually had one pretty productive year in Oakland and it's hard for me to believe that he's not distinguishing himself amongst the likes of Kashif Moore. But I still don't think he's shown much more than he has great straight-line speed (which we all knew already) and that he occasionally actually catches the football. I can't see us keeping 6 WRs unless he is just so damn good at special teams that we keep him for that and that only (like Arnez Battle who was that #6 WR for a couple years but he was truly just a special teamer who could play a little WR in an emergency). I think our roster is full or LBs and DBs who can play special teams better than DHB.

I think Steeler fans somehow manage to under-appreciate Antonio Brown. The dude is the only player in NFL HISTORY with 1,000 yards returning and 1,000 yards receiving in the same season. And the only player in NFL HISTORY to catch at least 5 balls for at least 50 yards in all 16 games. That's some impressive **** he has accomplished to date.

I know we have 8-9 LB's that I would like to see make the roster, and that's a lot. I think they would keep a howard jones for special teams in lieu of Bey,, like you said.

sorry about the penetrator comment.. couldn't help myself.

I was more excited about DHB potential Special teams contributions then WR. But you're right he may not be needed there. Our sudden wealth at LB and the speed of McClain, Blake, Golden and Thomas on special teams may make him expendable.

I think DHB is really going to have to show a lot to make the 53 man these last few weeks. Archer allows us to keep one less WR if we so choose and maybe keep an extra OL or DB. I read Moye is PS eligible so maybe if he can over take Moye he comes in as the 6th WR if we keep 6. But he is going to have to catch a few more big TD's to do that imho. Right now I feel this is how our WR core will look for 2014; A. Brown, Wheaton, Moore, J. Brown, and M. Bryant with Moye going to the PS.

del, not being facetious here, I would like to hear your thoughts.

I think the top-5 will end up being A. Brown, Wheaton, Moore, Bryant and J. Brown.

That's just my gut on things. Key is who is playing special teams with the first group as we head towards games 2-3 of preseason. If Heyward-Bey is on those groups, then he's probably in and J. Brown is out yet again (maybe to P.S.).

I just think Heyward-Bey offers nothing in the receiving core. To me he's too unreliable with his hands. Roethlisberger isn't going to trust him. That's why he didn't stick in Indy. Luck just refused to pull the trigger on him and he had to be benched (for Da'Rick Rogers of all people).

Again, it would not surprise me at all if Tomlin listens to his special teams coach, thinks Heyward-Bey will actually (somehow) make a difference on special teams and keep him on the roster over a potentially 4-5 year player for us (as a #4/#5 receiver) in J. Brown. To me I like Brown's contract and the fact we control him for the next 3 seasons vs. the rental Heyward-Bey.

Comes down to how Tomlin values special teams vs. how I value special teams. A decision like Heyward-Bey vs. J. Brown is exactly the type of scenario where the team is currently very different than my opinion on the best way to build a roster.

See any way we keep 6 wr's?

What the heck for? Why is 6 the magic number? We are keeping the young guys with promise (J. Brown and M. Bryant) and ditching a guy who can't catch, is on a one-year deal and will never get any better (DHB) and a guy who is not special in any way except for being tall (Moye) and he will probably end up on the practice squad anyway.

for ***** and giggles...? Because it could happen. I didn't say that I Wanted it to happen... Hard to pin down the 53 if they fluctuate on on the numbers kept at each position. If you see my final 53 projection in another thread.. I don't think they keep bey. I do pull for moye because he is the local kid.

If Heyward-Bey is on those groups, then he's probably in and J. Brown is out yet again (maybe to P.S.).

I wouldn't even include J Brown in the discussion. Word is he's progressed so much he's already competing for the slot position.
