Steelers Not Prepared for Cleveland Playing Zone

QB Lenny Pickett claims the Steelers were not prepared to play against the zone defense employed by Cleveland today.

Most teams have plays for Zone and Man defenses. Most teams can walk and chew gum during the same game.

Are we really that incompetent? All ranting about the abysmal display put on by Canada and Pickett aside, can they seriously not call different plays when they see a team isn't running what they expected? Has any coach or player made it through an entire season only playing against the defense they anticipated and therefore planned for???

For God's sake, if this is factual and accurate then fire everyone and hire the staff at Duquesne for the rest of the season. Hire a high school staff. This is beyond belief to read. This is incompetence at the most basic and simple level. These are supposed to be professionals, not a bunch of 7 year olds with 3 plays in the playbook.

If you haven’t noticed… Tomlin teams are extremely effective when given time to prepare… like the 10 day break after the Thursday night games or after a bye… but when he loses… its always because the team he plays has done something different than they expected…

when that happens in any game, it takes him till at least tge third quarter to try to adapt and often they just stick to the broken game plan until the end of tge game

This was a classic Tomlin game where he approached the game knowing they wouldn't need many points to win based on a rookie QB playing. Rather than try to go out and put up a ton of points, they play ultraconservative and lose.

I also added I may be delusional (probably am. ) In addition to what Pickett said, Najee in the post Gazette seems to be calling out the play calling and insinuating the defense knows what's coming. You know Pickens, DJ and Friermuth have had it. Add the refusal to add play action and using open backfields, the OL has got to be frustrated. The defensive line is just racing for the bone. Bet our defense is thrilled as well.

I'm not defending some of the players who were awful today but when the team has lost confidence and respect, even the duece has to realize the longer this goes on, the worse it's going to get.

Most offenses use pre snap motion so the QB can see if it's man or zone. Not the Canada offense.

This is so ridiculous that the whole gameplan could be blown just because the defense plays zone. You know, the most common defense at all levels of football. But that's a mystery that Canada just can't crack.

What an embarrassing statement by Kenny. Just the way this team played as well. We play a zone and QB'S run up and down the field on us. What our head coach and OC can't see this and make an adjustment. Please our stats on offense and defense were very obvious yesterday. Cleveland was ready and yes, the score was close but really... if it was not for a seventy yard run no way it would have been score wise close. Kenny might as well used his usual words we our working to get better, sure hasn't shown on the field. Zone defense beats offense great headlines.,

More and more has and will come out about how incompetent our coaching is and why they are, by far, the biggest issue holding this team back. They have the talent.

Ordinarily I would agree 100% but this is Canadas playbook we are talking about. I really don't know if he does have the ability to do so within the confines of this offense. Mason or Mitch might have to do a Ben and just make **** up on the fly. Kenny has only Canadas crayon scribblings to work from. Like I said in the gameday forum, Canada isn't even playing checkers against chess he is playing War against chess and randomly picking plays from a short stack. He isn't playing with a full deck.
