I feel Al Davis was a ghost in our war room. I'll give it a C and say I like it better than last years debacle.

McCullers is a planet.

Mel Kiper's draft grades

AFC North

Steelers A-
Ravens B
Bengals B
Browns B-

I'm with Burgundy on this. I'll let you know in 3 years.
I don't know that you can rate any of the drafts better than a C since the Tom half of Tombert has been here.
Won a Super Bowl with Cowher's players.
Lost a Super Bowl with less of Cowher's players.
Went 8-8 twice in a row with most of his own players.

And we'll conveniently ignore the fact that after the Superbowl Cowher went 8-8 with HIS OWN PLAYERS.

Mel and McShay loved the Steelers draft - both were just on ESPN gushing about it

Mel Kiper Jr. grades the Steelers' draft

PITSBURGH -- Count Mel Kiper Jr. among those who think the Steelers hit it big in a draft they had to get right.

The Steelers were one of just five teams that received an "A" grade from the ESPN analyst following the NFL draft, one in which Pittsburgh made nine picks.

Kiper gave the Steelers an "A-minus"Insider for their draft haul and the only thing he questioned is why they didn’t add more reinforcements at cornerback.

“Did they do enough at cornerback? Maybe not,” Kiper wrote. “But they got everything else right.”

Such praise emanates from the Steelers' top two picks, linebacker Ryan Shazier and defensive end Stephon Tuitt. Shazier adds speeds to the Steelers’ defense and should make an immediate impact. Kiper wrote that Tuitt is a “stud” who is a perfect fit on a defensive line that needed help.

As for cornerback, here is what general manager Kevin Colbert said on why the Steelers only picked one and waited until the fifth round to take Arizona’s Shaquille Richardson: “The way [the draft] broke, any player that we took really we were happy to get them where we got them. We weren’t going to reach for any position that we didn’t feel comfortable with. You knew a guy like Shaquille Richardson was probably going to be available in the fourth or fifth round. You just hoped he was going to be there and fortunate for us he was."

Time will ultimately tell whether the Steelers did enough to help themselves at cornerback and whether Kiper’s glowing assessment of their draft is correct.

Remember, none of the players drafted have played a down in the NFL and we probably won’t know for three years how well the Steelers did.

But I agree with Kiper that, at first blush, it looks like the Steelers had a really good draft.

“If you look at the men that we had an opportunity to select, their size, their speed, their versatility, obviously those are things we value,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. “We buy into the upside of these young men and we look forward to getting down to business and working with them.”

B

1 and 2 were good picks.

if 3 and 4 were flipped, there'd be a lot less bitching, but I think Archer was a wasted pick....hopefully I'm wrong.

this is a draft where it seems everyone has to make the roster.

Hopefully he lasts till Oct 5 in Jacksonburg - you better be there

Thanks Spike, that kid is out of this world....

I've never ignored that either. Coach Chin mailed it in in '06, I think we can all agree. Facts are facts. As Tombert replaces more and more players on the team with his own picks, they seem to get worse.
Again, your 5 and 6 years players ought to be hitting their prime right now and instead there is NO ONE left from the '08 and '09 drafts. The standard is the standard, if you will.

People have no problem ignoring the fact that Ben ran his face into a car and then had appendectomy surgery right before the season. Then he suffers a concussion during the season. But I'm sure that had nothing to do with the team's record. Also if Cowher mailed it in then what has Tomlin done the past 2 years? They started off 0-4 last year with a healthy Ben who played EVERY snap.

C'mon dude, Tomlin won 1 Super Bowl with Cowher's players, the same number Cowher won in 15 years. Cowher missed the playoffs 3 straight years with his players. I'm fine with all manner of criticism of Tomlin, but what the **** does he (or that criticism) have to do with Cowher? We could go 30 pages criticizing Cowher just like we can with Tomlin...let's live in the present instead.

A cold, hard dose of reality.

I'm not criticizing Coach Chin when it comes to drafting. I think we drafted better when he was here. Same GM so you've got to say that either Colbert has lost his touch or Tomlin's input isn't as good. Underperforming and deficit of talent are two different things.

Now that Kiper has given us a A- I'm really scared.

Well im pretty sure everyone loved the draft with Sweed and Mendenhall at the time. Right now it looks good on paper and hopefully it translates to winning games this year. I like our draft. Was upset over Shazier at first but I think he's going to be a stud. We couldn't tackle anyone last year in the middle and we haven't been able to cover tight ends in years. Now we finally have someone that can get after the ball carrier and cover the middle of the field.

the speed Archer has it's unbelievable, he also seems to have pretty good body control in those highlights

I guess you believe Ben has had nothing but injury and suspension free seasons under Tomlin? The two have almost identical records so far which are pretty damn good. Ever consider what you could have had instead?

I think a lot of us forget, that it was easier for the Steelers to draft back then. We were one of what 2 or 3 teams that ran a 3-4 and the other teams were a hybrid. We could draft 3-4 type players later and not worry about other teams getting them.

Now with what seems half the league running a 3-4 or a hybrid of it, we don't have the luxury anymore

I've mentioned this before. Certain players we picked then would not be lower round guys like in the past

I don't watch college ball so I am not even close to a expert like the rest of you guys and I also must admit it is hard to take off the steeler goggles, but the more I read and watch tape of Shazier the more I think we hit a homerun with this guy.
