Why is Matt Canada employed?

The Rooneys simply aren't going to fire their first Rooney Rule hire. Like other coaches, they will just let his contract run out.
Problem is that I'm sure he hears the talk that he won everything he won with Cowher's team and wants to prove that he can win a SB with HIS team, which won't happen because he isn't that good, but I don't think he'll leave on his own for a while. It'll take a few years for his ego to catch up with reality and realize like Cowher did that TV pays pretty good and it's a lot less work.

TOTALLY agree Ron. I think it's a 50 / 50 as to if they let this current contract expire. I think there might be one more 2 yr extension still available. Sadly, his 2 year extensions should have run out 5 years ago.

Agree. He's underachieved for ten years. If I was Deuce I would have told him the last time no more extensions unless you get to a Super Bowl.
I didn't say win, I just said "get to". With the talent we've had I think that's fair.
As former Pirates GM Branch Rickey famously told Ralph Kiner at renegotiation time, "We finished last with you, we can finish last without you."

I would settle for a playoff win. A tough decide would be if they played competitively. But this last contract was just those owners pockets being comfy with mediocre.

GREAT anology Ron, I'm going to use that in the future.

Thanks for all your great post(s) along the way.

To comfy as they have sold out seat / huge merchandising sales / great die-hard watch regardless of quality FANS / huge TV market, all for fat bank.

I think they have to pay canada whether he is here or not so should not matter if we fire him. I think its too late to bring in someone else, but surely to god someone on this team can create / call some plays that use the whole field. If they dont want to fire Canada then at least strip him of his play calling duties. He can stay on as the towel boy or something. I do not think any other team in the league would put up with this level of incompetence. They really bad part is coaching doesnt seem worried about it and thinks a few penalties are the issue.....It is one thing if they were trying to do different things and it just was not working, but they just repeat the same plays over and over and over. It is not, has not, and will not work. This scheme / gameplan is not going to magically become "tremendous."

The lone TD came on 4th down after a penalty and they used a trick play. If not for that penalty, Steelers would have kicked the FG and only scored 9 points on the day.

Canada celebrated that TD like they won the super bowl rather than scoring a lone TD. That’s because he knows his career is on the line. With his job on the line he rolled out the same old plays. Was there a trick or 2 in there? Maybe but adding a few tricks is not fixing the offense. It was the same easy puzzle for the defense to solve.

When I saw Canada celebrating that TD call, my first thought was, "Oh no, he's gonna get a 2 year extension :( "

Maybe his job isn't on the line. Maybe he knows he is secure for the remainder of the season, and that's why he keeps trotting the same **** out. I mean, Canada did say the offense was close to being tremendous, and at the half, Tomlin said he thought they were going to be ok if they stopped taking penalties. Those are the words of two guys not anchored in any form of reality.

So let me add this about the Steelers way and this coaching stability where we’ve had three coaches since 1969.
Sure, that’s great and all but would good is stability if the current coach hasn’t been getting it done and doesn’t appear to know how to fix things,
Permission to offer an analogy please?
A man and woman have been married let’s say 15-16 years but the marriage has gotten stale, there doesn’t appear to be any hope but they should remain together because it’s about stability.
To me it’s pretty much the same thing and that’s just out and out nuts to me.
We end up let’s say 6-11 this year and next year another losing season but we hold on to the HC because it’s what we do, it’s stability.
That’s ******* insane to me. Screw stability of giving the coach a life long job with mediocre results bordering on terrible .
Time to gut this mess after the season!

We've been saying Canada runs a college offense. The problem is he runs a simple college offense. Lots of college concepts are in the NFL including some of Canada's. The difference is NFL teams have added onto the basic model, Canada hasn't.

The Eagles are running a college offense. Watch all of the creative misdirections and route combinations. Watch all the ways the get guys like AJ Brown and Devonte Smith in space. I also want you to realize that these are all the things the steelers can do as well. Sure the Eagles OL is better but part of why they are better is the scheme keeps defenses guessing.

Watch what the Eagles do and then ask yourself why the Steelers can't do similar things with guys like Picket, DJ, Claypool, Freiermuth.
Just watch how bad we are when we RPO.

The throw decision is always too slow, frequently have ineligibles downfield when we try.

All his presnap motion and window dressings that do almost nothing to deceive the opponent/give us a tactical advantage-they simply bring more guys into the box and make presnap reads more difficult for OUR QB

On the contrary we have a highly paid FB, he’s even the brother of our franchise player. When Derek is in the field good things seem to happen.

Simple solution: run more I form
•Our RB seems to do better behind Watt
•Other teams don’t see the I as much anymore so they must prep for it
•We must improve the run game
•Canada’s run every first down concept would work better if we learned a run formation

Just too simple and a lot easier plays to comprehend/execute for our players failing to grasp Canadian system

why's he still gainfully employed?

What if Rooney told Tomlin to get rid of that Canada guy and he misunderstood and traded away the Canadian instead?

Coach Tomlin was just glad it wasn't him.

Ben Roethlisberger gave his thoughts on what he would do if he was the Steelers’ offensive coordinator. “I’m throwing the ball deep on first, second and third down, like I’m just saying I’m letting it go, I’m not throwing the five-yard pass, I’m not throwing the three-yard pass.”

You know, if you're going to go 3 and out anyway, a long pass that's picked off would be as good as a punt in most cases. At least it would be entertaining.

Those short passes should only be escape valve dump offs to RB/FB, not the main route. Now if we are talking about 5 yard slants that's another thing, fast plays with room to run for the receiver , I'm tired of all the curls and hitches towards the sidelines with zero chance for YAC

That is one SAD STAT to be owner of. 1/2 through the season and 8 yards. Better than 7 I guess........or 6....or 5.....0r 4....or 3....0r 2............. or 1

****-sizzle, I can't believe I'm even writing this ****-ing sorry *** post about 8 ****-ing yards.!!!!

I was listening to a PSU podcast with former QB Matt McGloin. They were talking about gameplanning for the week. He said that the night before the game, Bill O'Brien met with the QBs and they went over every single play on the call sheet for the game. He'd ask first, second, third read. He'd ask what to do vs certain defenses.

He'd then ask McGloin about situational plays like 3rd and 3. Give me 3 plays you like for 3rd and short,, then BOB would say OK those are the plays we're going with in those situations. Then he'd ask what plays he wasn't comfortable with and they were out for that game.

Does it seem like Canada does anything like that?

Can't wait to see the 2 new jet sweep variations installed for this game with 2 weeks to prepare.

I can remember Matt Canada as having a shifty, tricky offense. That was all the talk. Now we see it.
