William Jackson lll to Steelers

I really liked Claypool coming out of College. Though not as rabid as coolie is on the Cougars I'm an Irish fan and a Canadian. BUT, considering their wr situation vs. there OL front 4 deal, I'm ok with that move. This is a dumb *** move literally out of nowhere. The dude was heading to waivers and if the Steelers aren't in the best position to get him off there are like 4 other teams.

As a vested veteran, he wouldn't have been subject to waivers when Washington released him. He'd have immediately become a free agent. And, to be honest, as a free agent, if a bottom-dwelling team comes calling, I'm waiting to see if there's a better offer. I think they snapped him up in a trade because they felt like he wouldn't come here willingly. Sad.
You are correct, of course. I guess I read the above rant from SS2 and forgot about that vested veteran rule. Makes better sense, then.

I'm beginning to think that you're more than fairly knowledgeable.

Uh-oh.

From CBSsports.com:
"Jackson reportedly was not happy with the amount of zone coverage he was playing in Washington, as he considers himself a man-to-man defensive back. In 16 games played for Washington, Jackson recorded 55 combined tackles, 10 passes defensed and two interceptions."

Yeah, he'll be a great fit in Pittsburgh. They never play a lot of zone coverage.

Where is TMC when you need him? Though Steelbuckeye seems to have his **** together
Don't fall for the Okie Doke. I'm laid up recovering from knee surgery and have an excess of time on my hand right now. Lots and lots of time to sit around researching and gathering information.

God speed on your recovery.

Good. They need some guys who excel at playing man. Which I hope he does. Ike Taylor was the last guy they had who could really shut people down. The Steelers defense got beat by one man last game.

His man-to-man ability will be directly challenged by our coach to zone ability. If coaching would use these guys to their strengths, things could be uch better.

Salute the nation

But, but, we don't play man coverage.

Everything I am reading says this is a bad/dumb move for the Steelers unless they can renegotiate his contract. They basically got a one-year rental of an injured player, not playing well, for a team going nowhere. Most grades had this at a D or worse for the Steelers. We shall see but he definitely isn't worth his current contract and may not play much this year if his back is still an issue. This move made/makes little sense but, again, we shall see.

Plus, how is he 30? How many years did he play in college? If he was drafted in 2016, that would be 6 years ago and put him at 24 coming out of college. Was he in college for 6 years (18-24)? Is he that dumb to need 6 years of school? Someone help me here. Maybe my math is off or he is not 30 like most articles are saying.

This has Joe Schobert written all over it. Rent-a-player. Jackson is on the wrong side of 30, trending down, is due a large base salary next year. I think he'd have to really have a great end to the season to get a contract extension and lower his base pay and salary cap hit.

He is actually at exactly 30, not the wrong side. But I get your point and agree, only way to keep him next season is with a pay cut

Are you trying to say that they do?

That's odd. The first site I looked at, CBS, gave the Steelers a B.

Jackson was 23 when he was drafted. He spent some time at Trinity Valley CC, a junior college, to be able to qualify academically at the University of Houston. Does that make him "dumb," or does it show that he's a hard worker who did what it took to help get to where he needed to be?

My question is the numbers don't add up. If he was 23 in 2016 then he is 29 right now and not 30.

he was born October27, 1992

he was 23 when he was drafted but has just turned 30

Question, who sits to decide if Jackson is worth 14 million or whatever they can get him for on a contract next year? And isn't Kazee coming back isn't he part of who would be deployed in 5 plus Db's?

Kazee always played S during preseason, wether it was FS, SS or 3rd S in nickel/dime

I realize that but it's still a body in that package which already has Minkah and Edmunds who sure as hell are not coming off.
We need the 3 of them, look at the injuries. 2 te sets? Play the 3 safeties, Nickel against a run heavy team? Play the 3 Safeties

I'm not doubting they need them. I'm questioning where Jackson and his 3 million dollar try out fit in.

In other words the other guy they traded a fifth for and gave a contract to.
Yeap, exactly. His contract is cheap though, no complaints here. The mistake is the FO thinking he could be a true #1 when he can be a decent #2 at most.

For a cornerback, a day over 30 is on the wrong side of 30. When corners fall off, they really drop off a cliff.
