Steelers vs Ravens rivalry is one of the best in the NFL. You know the game is going to be a slobberknocker and today was exactly what you expect when these two teams meet. Very rarely do you see either one of these teams blowout the other. I think it's happened twice that I can remember one by the Steelers in 2007 and the Rats in 2011 if my memory serves me correctly. Steelers offense struggled the entire game moving the football especially in the first half of this game and the passing game wasn't much help either getting the offense going. It wasn't until we saw the Steelers go with 2 and 3 TE sets in the 2nd half that the Steelers offense started to move the football as the Steelers stayed pretty committed to the run, almost 50-50 which allowed them to control the Time of Possession and keep Lamar and the Rats off the football field which is never a bad thing. It was nice to see Justin Fields come in late in the game to help preserve the win.....something I'd like to see a little more because he creates a different dimension out there for the Defense to scheme against. The offense really needs a WR to step up into the #2 WR spot going forward. Saw very little of Mike Williams today....I hope he can step up into that #2 WR position because it's really a missing piece when you look at this offense going forward.
Defensively the Steelers are like Krytonite vs Lamar Jackson! They always seem to have a good game plan to keep him in check and today was no different! Jackson is now 1-5 vs Steelers in his career. They also did a good job of keeping Derick Henry in check with the exception of a 31 yd run but he had 13 carries for 65 yds and 1 fumble. Steelers won the turnover battle today too making an impact early in the game with Nick Herbig forcing the fumble on Isiah Likely that gave the Steelers the ball which they would turn into a Boswell FG....his first of 6 FG's. There were some good contributions by alot of guys on the Defensive side of the football throughout the game. One that comes to mind was Joey Porter Jr's play on the 2 point conversion to tie the game. Joey Jr lives in Lamar Jackson's head! Steelers also won the turnover battle today forcing 3 turnovers vs only one for the Steelers.
Looking ahead the Steelers really need to find the guy who's going to step into that #2 WR role because we need someone to step up down the stretch as we approach the playoffs which are looking more and more likely each and every week! It's really the missing piece this offense needs to become more efficient in the Red Zone. Boswell is great and I love the guy but I wanna see this offense putting up 7's instead of 3's when they reach that red zone. It blows we away that the Steelers have Pickens & Washington and they never target Washington in the endzone despite being 6'7" tall. Today I know they threw to him but I don't think Washington ever saw the pass coming his way as the ball was picked off in the endzone.
The celebration of this one is going to be short lived as the Steelers need to go on the road to visit the Clowns Thursday night. Lets enjoy this one for 24 hours and hope they beat the Clowns as they can enjoy a little mini-bye after we beat Cleveland Thursday!
Per Mike Tomlin's Post Game:
Keanu Benton - Leg injury that's being evalatuated
Game Balls:
Chris Boswell - Is he the new Legatron? He hit 6 FG's today and 3 of them were from 50+. The Boz is having a great year! Thank god he's a Steeler
George Pickens - 8 rec 89 yds.....he made some tough catches today and kept a couple drives going converting on 3rd down....what you expect from your #1 WR
Patrick Queen - 10 tackles, 1 forced fumble & recovery......nice game today. Way to stick it to your former team!
Payton Wilson - 2 tackles today, 1 INT.....first career INT.....great effort downfield defending that throw and ultimately coming down with the football
Larry Ogunjobi - Not sure if you watched him today but he really collapsed down on the right side of the Rats O-line today. Had 5 tackles today too.....He played great today!
Cam Heyward - 2 batted balls today and the old man just keeps playing his *** off week in, week out! He's like a fine wine....getting better with age!
Justin Tucker - Congrats on a new level of "SUCK" this season.....2 missed FG's today! Keep up the good work!
Game Goats:
Van Jefferson & Calvin Austin - You guys need to step up moving forward.......at this point I'm wonder why Van Jefferson is even on the roster!
