Steelers linebacker Jones vows to improve in 2nd NFL season

Steelers outside linebacker Jarvis Jones knows a statistics-thin rookie season raised doubts about how good — or how disappointing — an NFL pass rusher he will be.

The doubters aren't going away, at least for now.

“He can hunt — he can find that ball and hunt — but I don't see him as an elite pass rusher in today's NFL because he doesn't have that burst that you've got to have,” NFL Network analyst Jamie Dukes said. “He's a 3-4 edge rusher who doesn't have that super burst.”

Despite not having superlative speed — he ran a 4.9 40 on a chilly Georgia pro day last year — or significant stats in 2013 (only one sack), Jones was given a vote of confidence when the Steelers released former Pro Bowl linebacker LaMarr Woodley two months ago.

With Woodley now with the Raiders, Jones and Jason Worilds look to be locked in as the outside linebacker starters, barring injury.

After an intense offseason working out and studying the defense, and some strong practices to date, Jones thinks the Steelers will like what they see from him this season.

Mostly, they won't see what they saw last season.

“Things have slowed down for me. … Last year I was thinking too much, I wasn't able to react, play and do the things I like to do,” Jones said Thursday as the Steelers wrapped up the second of their four weeks of offseason practices.

“I'm more of a guy that moves and plays off instincts. Last year, I wasn't able to do that. I really didn't know what was going on around me as far as, if I'm rushing outside, I can't go inside the tackle because I've got a blitz coming up the middle. I wasn't able to be myself. I was limited to a lot of things.”

As Jones said, it's called “being a rookie.”

Linebackers coach Keith Butler agrees.

“He pretty much didn't know where to line up last year,” Butler said. “If somebody wasn't there to help him and tell him what he was supposed to be doing, he was playing half a second slow. The great thing about playing in this defense is that it is tough to play in your first year, but the second year everything slows down.”

The Steelers also brought in someone else to help — former Pro Bowl linebacker Joey Porter, who was hired as a defensive assistant in part so he could mentor Jones.

“He and Jarvis are probably the same guy, their style of play,” Butler said.

Jones is stronger, Butler said, although he remains listed at 6-foot-2 and 245 pounds.

“I see my game changing, as far as being in the weight room and grinding in there — I see it when I'm out here on the field,” Jones said. “It's getting better.”

Butler also was encouraged by Jones' play late in the season; Jones had 10 quarterback hurries in the final three games and 10 tackles in the final two games, including eight against the Browns. Overall, Jones' 25 QB hurries led the team.

“I didn't make as many plays as I should have, and they were out there,” Jones said. “But that's last year, and I'm looking at a totally different year.

“I'm just a whole lot better than I was last year.”

In reality with the season he had last year improving this year should be easy. we already have worilds with an ankle sprain, I hope it is not one of those high ankle sprains that will last all year.

If he has a high ankle sprain, now is the time to have it. It's a 6-8 week recovery time. Back in time for preseason!

Jones will make a step up this year compared to last. Not sure how big a step, but a step in the right direction.

Salute the nation

Jones is stronger than Joey??? I doubt it. The bench is not an 'all encompassing' measure of strength but Joey through the bar up 27 times while Uncle Jarvis tied Archer w 20.

I've hated on this pick for a while, that said, I want the best for him and the team. Hope this isn't the usual B.S.. I will say this, I've seen many great hockey prospects ruined by throwing them in the deep end too early. Hopefully his confidence isn't gone.

Hmmm, I wasn't aware of that. Not too shaby, of course, will be down-played by all the Jarvis-haters...

but only one sack!

(thought I would get a jump on them lol)

This is a big year for JJ. If he can have an 8+ sack season I think everyone would be happy. He's not the guy I would have picked but he's a steeler so I am rooting for him!

I think he meant Jones is stronger than he (Jones) was last year. Jones has gotten stronger, but not heavier.

I believe that Jarvis is stronger than Jarvis was last year, and might be stronger than Joey Porter is now since he Porter is no longer playing. But I doubt that they meant Jarvis is stronger than Porter was when he was playing.

One game the last was the browns, and that turns into 3.3 a game. If we are looking for a goal to shoot for maybe we should look at Harrison's numbers sacks, hurries, interceptions, tackles. Not saying that he needs to be the next Harrison just something to compare the numbers to.

Only because those stats are the definition of junk stats. Been saying that long before Jarvis came around, btw. Showed why a number of times already. Useless bullshit, to what end, dunno. Dunno the exact source of those stats. They're from the media guide the Steelers put out, so that suggests Burt Lauten and their PR department. Which makes sense. But Bouchette has maintained that they come from the coaches and their film breakdown. If that's true and the coaches believe in these numbers, let's just say there is a very, very, very, critical problem with self-evaluations. Butler always seems at the center of these stats. Maybe he's just propping up his favorites, or guys he had a hand in selecting. Job security for someone, maybe. I can't say. But he does like to work these crap stats into interviews about certain players. I know this is not unique to the Steelers. Other teams do it as well. Just don't really get why. If a team or a coach wants to prop up Player X, fine. There are ways to do that truthfully. Don't have to resort to flat out lying.

I said last year watching the games that Jones was close on alot of plays. Just wasnt strong enough to finish..hopefully this year he will finish those plays.

I remember picking up one of those guides while attending a game years back. It made every player look like a perennial all pro. LOL

I didn't see that,

He was totally dominated by opposing LTs.

I rewatched Jarvis' last two games - Bengals 2 and Browns 2 (he was out for the Packer game). Browns 2 specifically showed me a Jarvis I've never seen before. He was involved in every play, flying to the ball. He had a lot more coverage responsibilities too.

Bengals 2 was harder to notice him, since he rotated with Woodley for the first half of the game, and there was a ton going on otherwise in that game what with the Bengals getting their teeth smashed in. (Biggest takeaway I had from that rewatch is that the Steelers should have locked up Al Woods immediately. Oh well.)

Jarvis did a lot of good this season. Here's an example:

Jarvis didn't get the credit for the sack here, but he was instrumental in making it happen. That's Joe Thomas being walked back into the QB, not a Tight End.

You read that wrong.
Jones is stronger this year than he was last year.

Do people forget that Joey Porter took a ton of heat on this board for his failure to beat OTs? It's not as easy as we'd like to think to get around a guy who is 6'6" with long arms and outweighs Jones / Porter by 75 pounds. And it's really not easy when you don't know what the hell you are doing, which is the case for EVERY rookie that gets playing time in Lebeau's defense (although some guys deal with it better than others...Kendrell Bell didn't know what he was doing but he still manage to go 100 miles/hour regardless).

I didnt see that. 27 hurries support that. He was close. Couldnt finish.

Horseshit. Keisel was always the benefactor of that fictional stat. Every year he'd put up high 40s in 'pressures'. To go along with his 3 annual sacks. The Steelers as a team would have 140-150, and Keisel would have a third of those. On a 37 sack year for the Defense. Come on. Mean while the opposing team was killing Roethlisberger, and somehow only managing to pressure him 60some times. Less than half what Mighty Almost PSD was doing. Please.

And they haven't put out their annual media guide yet, which wraps up the 2013 season. But each week they put out media sheets that had running totals for the year. So I do have their 'in house' numbers from the first 15 games. Don't have one for the finale cuz there was no next game. Anyways, that article said Jones led the team with 25, posting 10 hurries in the last two games and 8 versus the Browns. Going into the last game the Steelers had him at 10 total for the year, zero versus the Packers. Allowing eight in the finale, that's 18. Even if it was 25, it didn't lead the team. Worilds had 29, Heyward had 28. Keisel ended up with 24.

It's all garbage.
