Did you honestly ever believe there was a real QB competition?

I didn't just like there wasn't really one in 2022; all made up fantasy.

They brought in Wilson to start. Fields is and always was a reclamation project.

I mean, outside of dimwitted national media... did anyone?

Basically, Barring Wilson playing so badly in camp and preseason that he looked totally washed up, the job was his... which is what every credible local source said from day one...
it was clickbaiters and national media potato heads that drove the "Fields is gonna start.. you wait and see" crap...

So by what week does Wilson get benched for Fields is the new question......🤔🤪

Fans better hope that doesn’t happen as if it does odds are the season won’t end pretty.

The media made up the competition. As I remember when they traded for Fields Tomlin called Wilson and said you are the starter. Same reason Pickett asked for trade. I think they got an extended look at Fields and if things don't go well he is in. They will want to know if either will be worth the 40-50 million a year contract.

I'm fairly certain both will get to play,so it doesn't matter. If the OL doesn't do well in pass protection, then you'll get to see Fields a little sooner.

This.

Wilson is the far safer bet, while Fields has more upside potential. The Steelers have too much talent to take a chance starting Fields. Who knows what the off-season and 2025 will bring?

I hope they don't. Fields is a stud athlete. He is not an nfl QB, IMO. I hope he gets traded to someone desperate.
If having Sam Darnold on the cover of your GameDay magazine doesn't qualify as desperate I don't know what does. Guarentee part of Bears trade was they couldn't repackage him.

No and Tomlin said so from the beginning. The job was Wilson's to lose just as who will get a contract after this season. I can't see them keeping both. I was hard on Fields for the fumbles but I believe they all were fumbled snaps and most were caused by the C (from what I've read). If that's the case, I would feel better about Fields moving forward. Wilson is at best a stop gap.

Russ was ALWAYS going to be the starter from the second they signed him. Only thing that could have changed that was an injury to Russ.
I think if the Steelers start out something like 1-3 then Tomlin pulls the plug. He’ll give him a few games to establish himself but if it goes badly early, he’ll get pulled.

If I was running things, I would see what they could get for Fields in a trade. That doesn’t mean I would accept peanuts though. I just don’t get the feeling that Fields is the answer going forward. The extended look in PS was just not enough for me to get onboard. I’m not sure we aren’t better with Wilson/Allen/Plumlee, if you can get a decent return on Fields.

Agreed. I was impressed by Plumlee. He looks like he will be more than Allen will ever be.

Tomlin doesn't seem to do QB competitions he's never had one. The competitions or changes happen in the games when one flubs bad enough to start to threaten the 500 streak or Shades has no other option after a cascade of his own bad decisions as happened with Mason. HCMT is rarely to never ahead of the curve with the most important position on the field. History bears this out.

This is a ridiculous discussion. I've been a Steeler fan since I knew anything in 70s. So around 50 years. Do you know how many QB competitions there were in that time? I guess you could say '74 when Gilliam won the job? Not sure it was a competition, Gilliam just took advantage of the strike and played lights out in preseason. It evolved, it didn't start out that way. Even in the lean years of the 80s, were there really any? I would argue most QB changes for the Steelers over the years kind of evolved instead of as competitions. It's a dumb criticism.

Keep in mind, Plumlee wasn’t;t going against 1’s. Has going against some 2’s and a lot of 3’s, so things might change in that respects. Giving the young man some time behind Wilson & Fields will definitely help him in many ways. I like his play as well.

Salute the nation

Never having a true QB competition is not anything to brag about.
