Curious as to why this guy was a healthy scratch in Jacksonville. Is he the second coming of Sweed? Looked to be quite the playmaker in college and is a big target that this team needs in the red zone. Typical rookie sit a year before contributing anything? I would like to see him get a chance but that's just me and I'm sure the Steelers know more about his ability to contribute than I ever will.

if Dri Archer beats him out for a hat, then it's obvious that he sucks more than Dri does at this point.

I think the issue is learning his reads. It is my understanding that when certain things on the defense present themselves certain routes are run. This has to be something that the qb and the wr both agree on or a pass will be thrown to the wrong spot and the only one likely to be there will be a defender. Best example of this was O'Dummel in the super bowl. I am speculating with this as the reason as I believe it was mentioned earlier, during the preseason, and this individual also had some issues in the past with applying himself to the task at hand while in college.

Archer is also the number 3 RB. He plays RB, WR and special teams. Bryant has to beat out DHB, Justin Brown and/or Lance Moore to get a hat each week. Unfortunately, he may not get an opportunity to play this year unless there is an injury.

LMAO. Karma sent.

Justin Brown played well, now I can assume Moore was fired after that catch after missing all of pre season, hopefully after the yelling he got from Tomlin he will be smart, a great route runner should be used when we stack each side with 2 wr use him on a quick slant or like the long comeback or shallaw cross.
DHB use him for just reverses

One thing I have noticed is we are not taking a lot of shots down field. So far only 3 of 41+. Now we are 0-3 for those attempts but I would like to see at least 1-2 a game. Bring in that five wide ******* formation and see if you can get DHB matched up on a safety or LB and send him deep. You know everyone will be looking at Brown so maybe have a hook from Brown and pump fake from Ben then if the safety bites you have DHB run on past him. Have DHB turn as if he is about to flatten out his route but instead turn it up field.

I'm wondering if that trend of not taking shots down field is because of play calling or is it Ben just not taking them? Reason I ask is that iirmc, Gradkowski and even Jones completed some long passes to DHB and at least threw some to Bryant during the preseason. And usually the results were pretty good; either completions or PI calls.

third round talent > fourth round talent

You know, there was a time when rookie wideouts were never expected to see the field their first year. I don't know why we think these guys are going to be superstar hall of famers right out of the gate

Because we've got AB and then a bunch of jabronis. Well, Dri Archer, I forgot about Dri Archer....

It'd be worth giving the ball to Bell and Blount at this point because of re zone issues.

your thinking is so outside the box. Why would you give the ball to the best RB in the league when you have first and goal from the 4? I mean there is no chance he could get 4 yards in 3 tries is there?

Bruce Arians? Is that you?

Since we are 0-3 for 41+, that is exactly why I don't want to see them thrown for the sake of being thrown. Ben's long ball sucks. And Arians was keen on doing at least 5 a game. For reasons.

We aren't 0-3 on that because Ben's long ball sucks. Brown dropped one off his finger tips, perfectly timed and thrown ball. He over threw Brown once because Brown slowed his route too soon. The reason you all think Ben's long ball sucks is because he was constantly waiting too long to throw to Wallace and he would have to wait for it. He has much better timing with Brown, for what ever reason that is.

I agree with your assessments, but I was always hard on Ben because he would always seem to underthrow the long ball. Not just to Wallace. He rarely hit receivers in stride deep. I don't know if it's because he waits too long to release, but it was an issue earlier. He seems to me to have gotten better at hitting receivers in stride in the last few years.

I think a lot of that has to do with Haley and his emphasis of getting the ball out faster. You get into a rhythm like that, and all the throws become easier. Did you know Ben leads the league in completion % of passes 15+ yards? 56.7%, he's at 68.9% over all, over 5% higher than his career average.

Maybe the wrs are getting better at running the routes? A long pass has lots of time in the air and lots of time for the wr to adjust while it is in flight. Think of their 40 times and a flight time of 1 second that could easily be 7 yards give or take on where the ball and the wr are.

Ben is great at those routes that are like 15-20 yards down the field where he can still laser it in to a guy sitting down in an open spot or along the sideline

Where Ben struggles is on deeper routes requiring touch and leading a receiver, he can't hit them in stride. The one Antonio dropped was definitely one of Ben's better deep balls, but that's always been one of my biggest gripes with him. He doesn't lead receivers deep downfield well on a regular basis. It sickens me to see QBs like Flacco and Russell Wilson drop bombs right in receivers' hands in stride and wonder why Ben can't do it consistently

The obsession with the horizontal passing drives me nuts. Bubble screen! Bubble screen!
