OLB depth

Maybe we are not looking at the big picture ?
Many times last season we saw Troy playing linebacker. Some of this was due to Vince Williams trying to grow into a role much too soon, but some of it was because we aren't really a 3-4 defense anymore

Are we still a true 3-4 defense if we were in sub packages more times than not ?

Gerry Dulac quoted Tomlin a few days ago saying that "The Steelers used their sub-packages in which they employ five or more defensive backs nearly 65 percent of the time -- an increase of 10 percent from the previous season, Tomlin said.

Are we going to see either 5 LB's or 5 DB's on the field as a rule ?
We'll end up with a 5 LB package on running downs as an alternate to the 3-4 and a 5 DB package on passing downs. I think the proof is in the pudding. We drafted a lot of speedy linebackers lately to put on the inside of the line. They are better at lateral pursuit but still big enough to fight off a block.

Ought to be interesting to see 5 LB's and 3 lineman chasing little Johnny Jackass around the field.

What 5 lb's would be out there on running downs? Timmons, Shazier, Worlids, Jarvis, Spence?

That would be a pretty quick bunch but Spense is still a big question mark. It's not like we don't have a bunch to chose from in camp...

54 Carter, Chris LB 6-1 248 25 3 Fresno State
57 Garvin, Terence LB 6-3 221 23 R West Virginia
95 Jones, Jarvis LB 6-2 245 24 R Georgia
45 Molls, Dan LB 6-0 238 23 1 Toledo
50 Shazier, Ryan LB 6-1 237 21 R Ohio State
49 So'oto, Vic LB 6-3 263 26 3 Brigham Young
51 Spence, Sean LB 5-11 231 23 2 Miami (FL)
94 Timmons, L. LB 6-1 234 27 7 Florida State
98 Williams, Vince LB 6-1 250 24 R Florida State
48 Wilson, Kion LB 6-0 230 27 4 South Florida
.. Zumwalt, Jordan LB 6-4 235 22 R UCLA
55 Moats, Arthur OLB 6-2 250 26 5 James Madison
93 Worilds, Jason OLB 6-2 262 26 4 Virginia Tec
.. Howard Jones LB (Shephard) FA

I've been hearin stories about this Zumwalt kid, they say he's a hard worker that's got a chance to at least make the PS. This is going to be a hellava camp. 14 going in, what..maybe 8 stay if they can play ST's ?

I think these 8-9 LB's make it out of camp, with Garvin's spot iffy....Howard Jones a major darkhorse for a final spot. Also depends how the roster shakes out. Chris Carter is gonna feel the heat big time in Latrobe.

1. Timmons
2. Shazier
3. Worilds
4. J. Jones
5. Moats
6. Williams
7, Spence
8. Zumwalt
9. Garvin or H. Jones
