Thanks Tape !!!!

My favorite Niece's Husband is a Clemson fan so we will see what he has to say about that gae.

Salute the nation

Still can't believe Penn State is going to be right up the street in Tampa for a New Years' day bowl. They lucked out big time. They will be a huge draw for the game.

I think Pitt is a 1.5 dog because Pickett hasn't committed one way or the other.
Time to stand up Kenny. I don't care what his decision is, but it's time to make it.

The most fabulous time of the year!!

I will either watch live or DVR every game for future viewing

Tape....what's your thoughts on Clifford announcing he's coming back again next year for PSU? 5 star recruit Drew Allar also coming in and the room will also have Sophomore Christian Veilleux.

I think it’s great that Clifford is coming back. Allar may not be ready to start immediately. We saw this year how important QB depth is. Clifford knows the offense and if nothing else can be a great mentor. I figure it will be an open competition between Clifford and Veilleux to start the season and then Allar will be brought along and take over when ready.

In other PSU news, RB Committ Nick Singleton won the Gatorade National Player of the Year. This kid will play almost immediately. They need a home run RB and they got one. The rest of the RBs are good but not great. They added some more talent at WR and most importantly have some good OL prospects in the system now. If Allar is the real deal, the PSU offense could explode in the next few years.

Penn State also got a huge win when they hired formed Miami HC Manny Diaz to replace Brent Pry as DC. Diaz got the boot when Miami poached Mario Cristobal from Oregon. Diaz may not have been a great HC but he is an excellent DC and a lot of his schemes are similar to what PSU already does.

PSU also got lucky keeping DB coach Anthony Poindexter. He is a former Virginia All American and was inducted into their HOF and was rumored to be top choice for The VA head job. He turned it down basically saying he doesn’t feel he’s ready yet. Smart man. He’s young and still has a lot to learn. VA may be his dream job. Smart to turn that down now before he’s ready. Take it now and maybe yo fail. Take it 5 or 10 years from now and maybe it’s your job for life.

I heard some rumors that maybe the Bears will go after Ohio State coach Ryan Day and pair him with Justin Fields. If that happened, you would think OSU would go after Luke Fickell unless Urban Meyer taps out after 1 year of NFL.

As a PSU fan hoping for the demise of OSU, I’m not sure how I’d feel about that. Day is a very good playcaller but I’m not sure he’s a great HC. OSU was pretty soft this year and that’s something that often happens when a playcaller becomes HC. It becomes all about scheme and little things like blocking and tackling go downhill. That’s why Lincoln Riley ultimately failed at Oklahoma and why he ran away like a ***** from the prospects of coaching OK in the SEC.

Fickell didn’t work out in his first stint as interim HC and OSU but he’s gained experience since then. He would certainly make OSU more fundamentally sound but maybe less explosive.

Could Urban return? If he did, his brand may be hurt somewhat by such a failure at the NFL. It didn’t hurt Saban much when he failed with the Dolphins but somehow public perception wasn’t that he failed, just that he’d rather coach college. Plus Bama pays players so that helps too. Urban is being roasted by the media with negative coverage almost from day 1. I think his public perception would be much worse going back to OSU and could make the job tougher. You could now negative recruit saying that he always has 1 foot out the door and his system won’t prepare you for the NFL.

One big thing for OSU is that the Early Signing Day for recruits is today, so if Day does leave, they should have a recruiting class locked in.

OSU could dig up woody hayes and still beat PSU as long as Franklin is at the helm. And having a great RB commit does no good if the o-line can't block. They need a new OL coach, and maybe a new strength coach.

I don't think Day would leave OSU. You're right about him being a great play-caller. They just hired Jim Knowles away from Okie State. He is the real deal. With OSU's recruits, he could make that defense scary.

Their OL coach, Phil Trautwine, is actually very highly regarded. Trautwine was named to the American Football Coaches Association list of the top-35 football coaches under the age of 35 for 2021. He was the only Big Ten coach on the list.

He played at Florida and won 2 national championships then played a few years in the NFL. PSU got him from Boston College where he did a great job and BC ran the ball really well.

The issue is OL takes time to build. The 2020 COVID year really hurt OL development, not just at PSU but most schools. I watched a podcast where they discussed how OL play across the nation has been below par last year and this year and a big part is that last year was lost. It hurt OL more than other positions because OL needs more physical development and due to COVID, most players had to work out on their own instead of with a strength coach screaming at them.

Trautwine has recruited well and the scheme the OC implemented has complex blocking schemes involving the OL, TE and RBs, so I'm patient for now. If the OL sucks again next year in year 2 of the scheme and with some more highly recruited players starting, then I'll say it's time to move on from him but not yet.

It probably won't happen, but if Day does think Fields is a great player, then it would be very tempting. The Bears have a solid defense. Montgomery is a good RB. Darnell Mooney has emerged a a good young WR to pair with Allan Robinson. If Fields is a star then the Bears could be contenders with just 1 good offseason.

He'd get a ton of money and if he failed in the NFL, he'd easily get a top college job again. So it does make sense. It also makes sense for the Bears after seeing how pairing Kingsbury with Murray is working so well.

Of course, it could also just be a rumor started by Day's agent to get him more money from Ohio State

You have a link for this rumor? I'm asking because NONE of the Ohio newspapers have even hinted at it. Sounds a lot like how the national media makes **** up about the Steelers and the local beat writers are like "Haven't even heard anything remotely like that".

Also, if tOSU is soft under Day, what does that say about PSU given that Ryan Day coached tOSU teams have beat PSU in each of Day's meetings against them?

Edit: I take back the part about no Ohio papers even hinting at it. I don't read the Cleveland rag, but apparently they wrote an article on it qbout 10 hours ago. Still, I'd be surprised if Day left. He's the second highest paid coach in the B1G. Of course, since Franklin is the highest paid coach, Day deserves more based on performance. ;)
But, if he did leave, tOSU would have no problem getting a top notch coach. It's a premiere job in college football.

what does it say about PSU? Nothing. Ohio State has far more talent on the roster. The fact that Franklin has generally played OSU close each year and even won some with a significant talent gap is pretty damn good.

To me it says more about Harbaugh that he inherited a loaded team and has had a team closer in talent to OSU and has basically gotten his *** kicked every year until this one.

As I mentioned in another reply, OL play in general has been subpar due to last year’s lost Covid training, so maybe OSU being soft this year is a result of that and will rebound. But if you are honest you have to admit that OSU was clearly out muscled by Oregon and Michigan.

With Day, I still think you have to wait to see how great he is as a coach. We’ve seen lots of guys take over good teams and have early success and then it declines in a few years. The best example is Larry Coker at Miami. Won a National Championship and then the program slowly declined.

Three good points here Tape. OL play has been weak this year. Maybe it is due to the lost/impaired Covid year. As for tOSU, it could be that or the fact that they had 4 guys starting who were either new starters or new to the position they were playing. In my mind, they would have been better served to keep some of those starters at the positions they started the last two years; Left and Right tackles come to mind. You potentially weaken 3 out of 5 positions by moving Munford from LT to LG and Petit-Frere from RT to LT then slotting Jones in at RT. *On a side note, Munford shouldn't even have been there. He benefitted from/took advantage of the extra COVID year and should have already been on an NFL roster. So, you also delayed the development of whomever would have been playin LG this year.

Also, you are correct that we've seen guys get handed a loaded roster and then proceed to sink the ship. Day just doesn't come across as that guy. Time will tell.

As for Harbaugh/Franklin. I'm biased in that I think both Harbaughs are whiny little *****. Now, that bias is very possibly a reflection my tOSU/Steelers fandom; but, I can't generate the same amount of animus for Franklin.

Kenneth Walker isn't playing for MSU. I love the trend of players saying **** all y'all.

Kenny Picket announces for draft and Opts out of bowl vs Mich State

I think that's a mistake. MSU has the worst pass defense in NCAA. Picket could use 1 more game vs a highly ranked opponent because Pitt's schedule wasn't that tough this year with Clemson and UNC being down.

Not to mention, I'd bet few people have actually seen Picket play this year. Yes, fan support does move the needle on draft picks. It shouldn't but it does, especially for the ****** teams that tend to pick high.

Detroit will have a top pick. It would help Pickett's case with Lion fans to put up a huge game vs Mich State.
