College Football Week 3

There are no ranked matchups this week but there are some interesting games and 1 brawl. For many teams, week 3 is a step up in opponent ans so many schools play cupcakes in the first 2 weeks.

7 Penn State at Illinois 12:00 FOX PSU-14.5
They last played in 21 where PSU came up short in 9 OT game. Illinois is a decent team but they lost a ton to the NFL so their defenses is nowhere near as good as last year. This is the first road start for QB Drew Allar, although he did play in last year's opener at Purdue. Champagne isn't the most intimidating place even if they are calling for an Orange Out. Illinois has Ole Miss transfer Luke Altmyer at QB but not a ton of weapons.

The game vs Delaware was pretty much a scrimmage last week. Penn State's run defense hasn't really been tested yet. WVU did a bit but chose to throw far more than they should have. PSU's defensive scheme is complex. They don't have size. They use speed which means everybody has to be in the right place or they can give up big plays like they did on Delaware's long TD run last week.

14 LSU at Miss State 12:00 ESPN LSU -9.5
LSU beat up on Grambling last week but they need a real win to get the tast of the Florida State beatdown out of their mouths. Miss State is coming off an OT win vs Arizona.

South Carolina at 1 Georgia 3:30 CBS UGA -27.5
Georgia facing their first team with a pulse. Georgia has won 20 straight at home. Last loss was to South Car 4 years ago. UGA defense will likely shut down SC but it will be the first real game for QB Carson Beck.

10 Alabama at South Florida 3:30 ABC Ala -33
Bama coming off an ugly loss looking to get back on track and prepare for Ole Miss next week.

Minnesota at 20 North Carolina 3:30 ESPN UNC -7.5
NC's defense is pretty bad. They went to OT with App State last week. Minn isn't great but they're physical. NC can sometimes get pushed around.

Western Michigan at 25 Iowa 3:30 BTN Iowa -28.5
Iowa OC Brian Ferentz (the HC's son) has been under fire for a few years for offensive struggles. This year the university forced him to accept a new contract. For the 23 season, Iowa must average at least 25 points and win at least 7 games or he is automatically fired. Steelers should have done that for Canada. Iowa only averaging 22 so far. He better run up the score vs Western Mich before conference play begins.

Western Kentucky at 6 Ohio State 4:00 FOX OSU -29.5
OSU looking for the replacement for CJ Stroud. QB Kyle McCord hasn't exactly lit it up vs Indiana and Youngstown State. This is their final tune up before Notre Dame next week.

8 Washington at Michigan State 5:00 Peacock Wash -16.5
MSU coach Mel Tucker is suspended after it was initially reported he was fired. As more details come out, the sexual harassment allegations sound fishy. Feels to me like MSU regrets giving Tucker $95 Million after 1 good season when they scored RB Kenneth Walker in the portal and he carried their team, and they will use this to void that deal.

11 Tennessee at Florida 7:00 ESPN Tenn -6
Tenn's defense is not very good so they need that offense to score a bunch of points. Tenn QB Joe Milton has been a bit shaky so far. Florida was awful week 1 vs Utah but looked better vs McNeese as they should have.

Pitt at West Virginia 7:30 ABC WVU -2.5
The backyard brawl. WVU has won 7 of the last 10 meetings in Morgantown. Their coach Neal Brown needs this win badly. WVU's defense was awful last year. Against Penn State in Week 1, they weren't great but they seemed improved. Their run defense is good but lack athletes in the secondary. Pitt's passing game has been terrible so far with QB Phil Jurkovec. Will PSU transfer Christian Veilleux get the call if Jurkovec struggles again.

WVU has a strong run game. Their interior OL is one of the best in the country. All 3 look like NFL players. Pitt gave up over 200 yards rushing to Cincy last week. They will have their hands full stopping WVU RB CJ Donaldson and slippery QB Garrett Greene. Neal Brown wants to throw the ball. Will he abandon the run?

Pitt OC Frank Cignettis Jr's father was head coach at WVU in the 70s.

Colorado State at 18 Colorado 10:00 ESPN CO -24
Colorado gets their 3rd straight chump to start the season. Their next 2 games are Oregon and USC

Yeah, I'm worried about PSU's D now. I thought they were much better than they appear to be and the O isn't getting the big runs we saw all last year with a supposedly much worse OL. They still should win their next 4 to go into the OSU game undefeated but one game at a time. Illinois hasn't looked good but it's a conference game on their home field.

Looking forward to seeing one more Backyard Brawl game. After this one who knows when they'll play again.

It should be a law, no a commandment that WVU and Pitt thou shalt beith in the same conference so that they may raineth blows upon each other every Fall and upon WVU victory, couches shall burneth in the sacred land known as Sunnyside again. Amen

Maybe you can stand on an overpass and part the traffic as they pull into to town as well………………….

Video it and post it here……………

Vols are tied at 23rd in points allowed per game; allowing 183 passing yards per game and 87 rushing yards per game.
yeah, not every good. despite the two teams they faced having to pull out all the stops and run risky plays to try and make it a game.

I'll allow that Milton hasn't been too good, but his passes are catchable. He's not - to this point - turning the ball over and is making good decisions. He's only been sacked twice and hasn't thrown a pick. He'll hopefully continue at that pace and his WRs will develop thumbs.

Penn State has turned Illinois over 4 times and can’t move the ball. The are driving the bus down struggle street. Penn States OL is getting their lunch money stolen. They aren’t ready for Michigan or Ohio State, and may not get out of this one.
